Wow...

we have a very diverse bunch of MR-ers.

My job role straddles several different areas, but basically in the market research/consulting/information managemnt areas within the pharmaceutical industry - and I really enjoy my job, the company I work for and my clients.

I am happy I am able to say that.

911!

I'm a shift supervisor in a regional 911 / Police & Fire Dispatch center. I work 12-hour rotating shifts and I absolutely love my job! I just wish the dispatch software ran on Mac's........

Jobs

I'm a glorified project manager for some software.

Have also been (and paid better than 500 bucks in a year,,, someone once told me that's when you can claim "professional" status- why did I believe them?) ....
a cook
handyman
house painter
student
drifter
canvas painter
picture framer
builder
and I hope to add to the list. I've been inventing lately... but haven't sold anything! I really did get paid better than $500 in one year to drift. Quite an accomplishment.

Jobs become identities too often. I don't want my job to become who I am - so I try to make a move every couple of years - even when I have been really successful at something, I want to keep moving. So far it has been to better and better things. But sometimes I'd like to take a step back and do something less ambitious. But I got bills!

I am a Professional Engineer and Technology Project Manager for the largest SP in these parts. I have PMP, CCNA and ITIL certifications. Pretty cool work, although I am an entrepreneur at heart, and have been getting that itch more and more as of late to explore what else is out there.

What do you do for a living and what would you LIKE to do for a living?

I work with my dad doing property management, landscaping, sweeping parking lots, raking, cutting grass, snow shoveling, odd jobs like fixing toilets, sinks, etc - basically what I like to call "sh*t jobs" but I get paid $25/hour doing it so I guess I don’t mind, it gets me the tools (my Power Mac setup and my Canon 1D Mark II n setup and other stuff) to do what I truly want to do later on in life.

I'm going to be hopefully working for myself by the end of 2006 since I have too much of a gift with computers and technology to be wasting it working with my father doing manual labor, everyone I've meet so far asks my why I'm not in college. The tools I'm getting by working with my dad go towards my love of photography and videography so I plan on leveraging my knowledge of software and various hardware to make some money and love doing what I do best.

I'm an ecologist. I wake up early and stalk animals with binoculars. I dig holes and plant stuff in them. I design science experiments that take place outside, not in a lab. Next month we're trapping bobcats and mountain lions.

Yes, I get paid for all of that. Shocking, eh?

Awesome! :) I'm looking into getting a Master's in Forest Conservation...so a somewhat similar vein? I don't know if I'll have a chance at getting in since I currently am in a Social Policy department which is probably pretty far off, but I'm going to give it a try for sure. Hopefully they're willing to take the risk...

That being said, I'm a student who works part-time as a Network Advisor for my school and residence hall. It's got its good points and bad points, but is overall enjoyable and keeps me fed and housed, so yay :D

My job description says I'm a System Engineer, that is a bold statement IMHO. I'm a hardware jockey and look after the configuration (and break/fix) of servers for our customers, mainly I work with Windows 2000/2003 Server, GNU/Linux, SCO on x86 and x86-64 hardware. I'm over paid for what I do, and I like it that way. I'm hired as a "permanent" contractor so I work when I want, for as long as I want. I don't think I could be bothered doing anything else, I have a good case of under worked and over paid going on at the moment.

Student

Will be for a WHile longer

bbut i plan to be a Lawyer(and then if i have the $$ go and work at summer camp that i go to now)

BUt i work at the Camp when i older before College(and they have Mac there!!)

It would be awesome for you to move on to what you are really gifted at, but $25 an hour for manual labor??? Oooh...I would LOVE it. Manual labor is the only thing I excel at;)

I'm a full-time high school student (still a sophomore - not worrying about college so much just yet) doing odd jobs here and there. Next summer I plan to intern somewhere and maybe actually get a real job somewhere if I can find the time to do so.

How do you like boarding school? Was it your choice? Do you miss your family? How old were you when you started?

I've always wondered what it was like for kids at boarding schools. I have never met or talked to any boarding school alumni/students.

Boarding school isn't bad...it's a totally surreal world though...life is much different there than for kids at public school. Really there are many valuable life lessons you can learn by having to tough it out yourself...for example, no parents to tell you not to pull all nighters, you figure out yourself why you should avoid them after the first one... :p

Honestly I think the independence factor is really important...too many kids these days are living at home with their parents watching their every move and controlling every bit of their lives, whereas at boarding school you have to sort of figure things out for yourself, and when you can't figure them out, you try harder. :)

Although a repeat thread, it's always interesting for me to see what folks do when they're not scurrying around Macrumors forums.

Me? The real job that pays the bills is a sales job in the telecommunications software industry. Off hours, I do bartending part-time, not for the money but for the "social rewards" and the free booze. :D

Have also working in retail, been a computer support specialist, product manager, entertainment promoter, artist representation and launched two startups -- but by far the best job I ever had was as a radio on-air personality (we in the biz never called ourselves disc jockeys  ). Unfortunately, the pay is AWFUL, there's zero security and today's radio world is the same homogenized Clear Channel crap in all American markets. Whatever happened to Gino Michellini afternoons on KLOS in LA, or The Loop (WLUP) in Chicago, or Larry Miles on KOME in San Jose? Remember when these stickers were on every Camaro and Firebird?? http://www.fuseboxfilms.com/KOME stickers.html

Ah, those were the days.... :p

My work experience began in my parent's photography studio; offfice work, assorting picts, taking picts. We did sports teams, weddings, school pics, graduations, etc. I have worked at a pizza shop and a scuba dive shop.

My real career is a Registered Nurse. I work in ICU; surgical, medical, and neurological. It is pretty exciting some times, but we have a lot of chronic patients that we end up taking care of for weeks and sometimes months at a time. We do get the knarley trauma's sometimes; gun shot wounds, lots of car wrecks(MVA) and motorcycle wrecks(MCA).

People WEAR YOUR SEATBELTS and HELMETS!!! You would not believe the difference it makes sometimes.

I was just reading some posts and I started to wonder what every poster does for a living. Myself, I am currently un-employed, but most recently worked in a factory as QC/assembler/machine operator. What do you do for a living and what would you LIKE to do for a living?

I've done several different things throughout college, including software developer, research assistant, clerical assistant, even "setup crew" -- which means putting out rows of tables and chairs for special events at the university.

Currently I'm looking for work, crossing my fingers to get a job as a tech consultant :)

I love hearing what other people here do...I think the stereotype is that mac fans are either artists or people with more money than they know what to do with.
