I'm pretty disappointed they dropped firewire. There are so many devices that still use it. Now even at home they're forcing us to use an adapter.

I'm glad I have little invested in the Apple ecosystem since their business integrity will likely drive me to Windows.

Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. boom.?

incredible..

This Apple event was amazing. I just love how they present their products, what a great show!

Regarding the iMac, this is how I feel about it:

On first sight I really love the new design. It looks even "spacier" which I love. For a design nut like me it is just great!

Now - unfortunately the cold hard reality looks a little bit different. What I absolutely hate about it, is the new direction Apple is heading with its products. I have the feeling in order to sell more machines more often, they clearly shorten the live cycle of products by making it impossible to do any upgrade or enhancement by the user. Also third party upgrades are harder to do in the future. I do not like this direction at all.

Friction welded?? Now they actually took away even the last bit of freedom to open the computer at all. This is bad, it feels like tyranny to me. This is also the reason I never ever had an iMac. For me its clear, catch the latest and maybe last Mac Pro no matter what.
Oh by the way, the new fusion drive is called caching in the PC world, not hybrid drive as some on the forum mentioned above. It was first adopted by Asus I think. For the freedom loving Mac Pro crowd you can read more about here:

Of course Apple wants to do this now on their own. Nice try, but this time Mr. Apple, you cant sell this as new....

My Cons:
No firewire
No Optical drive
No user upgradable ram on the 21.5(Negative point depending on price, it comes with 8GB stock which is pretty damn good though)IMO
80% thinner....its a desktop? I'm not going to bring it around in my backpack. I'd be scared of that falling off my desk and breaking.

My pros:
Reduced reflection would be great when watching movies up close
Fusion Drive(SSD and HD in one. I'll have to look into this)

Its hard to know until I see a full spec list and upgradable options. If the optical drives are cheap, USB3 audio interfaces are plentiful and the RAM options are well priced then I'll be happy getting one of these.

are you kidding? I've been reading the "what do you expect from the new imac"-like threads every other day and there were many who wanted a thinner imac. now you got it and you're not happy?

"oh a desktop just sits on your desk, who cares if it's thin?"

well a tv also sits on your desk or hangs on your wall but I'm guessing most of you have less-than-an-inch thin tv at home, right? as someone else pointed out, it's an achievement, let them gloat about it.

honestly, I don't think you will notice a 20% drop in gpu. I won't be playing games on mine.

getting a 27" in december, i7, 32gb ram which I will, (thank God), be able to add myself.

Lol since HDTV's have CPU's and GPU's in them that need to be cooled... And if a TV had a MAJOR component in it that was designed for a mobile device I doubt I would get it.. Just saying.

The iMac, IMO, is an overpriced, fashion oriented, consumer "desktop" meant for the masses of naive people out there that will buy a computer based solely on what it looks like. Not saying forum members are these naive people but everyone knows there's a ton of people that buy Apple products who don't know jack **** about them. Just go check out the youtube video of a comedian showing people iPhone 4S's in NewYork claiming that they are iPhone 5's (before it was even being shipped) and people were blown away... Sigh...

I for one did NOT want it to be thinner (ie more worthless) than it already was... For sure as hell will not buy one now.

Since there's no built-in optical drive, will they be selling a standalone drive that would attach to the iMac via a cable (probably Thunderbolt)? I seem to recall something like that for the Macbook Air.

Ho Hum

Face it folks, we're not the market for these beasts. All of us hoping to sees a Mac Pro in AIO clothing were thinking wishful.
I couldn't wait and bought a 2011 refurb last month. Not disappointed. SD slot in the back? Terrible.

On the bright side, you could take off the silly "stand" thing, and you can own the largest and most powerful iPad out there. :D

!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable pack of bitches on here !?,!!!!,! From the turn of the year most of you ( not all ) have been moaning and contemplating suicide or worse stil,l would by a win pc .

Now the update has come its not good enough. Well here's a question what out there is better??..

:apple: new iMac 21.5 fusion drive :apple: when its available

Hey all this people can't be wrong, they are just giving their opinion. If you have different opinion then say it. No need to abuse majority. Nobody care if desktop is thinner than the 2011 model. Bring back optical drive in next model and I will be happy. I will be even willing to pay extra cash for them to update my RAM.

I saw that video and I really dislike people like that. I was never a gamer, I earn my money with photography and retouching and I simply wanted less glare and more RAM, which is why this display looks very appealing to me. I seriously hope it won't have heating problems like the older models, although it seems like I might get disappointed. But December is still a few weeks away and the 21" buyers will be able to tell us more about that.

Damn, I was hoping the base 21 inch would come with an SSD. Looks like I'll have to get the better one with an SSD. Wonder how much the SSD will cost.

Looks like I may also be picking up a 2011 refurb...

This is pretty much my feelings for pros and cons. Another I might add is; doesn't the 2011 entry level iMac have a 7200rpm drive and the new entry level 5400? I'm not even talking the new fusion drive here as the entry HD on the new ones appears to be a standard HD.

Im very torn now...

Personally i will miss the optical drive. I use mine nearly every day and begrudge the idea of needing to fork out £50-£60 for a external AND take up one of the ports on the back of the machine, of which nearly all i use.
Also i dont like the fact they've lost the FW800 port. I use alot of digital recording hardware which uses FW ports to connect to the computer. Again i begrudge spending £25 on an adapter just so i can use my gear and external HD.

At the same time the design is pretty awesome and i do like the specs quite a bit, (living with an '09 iMac which, while no slouch, is a bit dated hardware wise)

I cant decide, ive been waiting quite a while for the new iMacs and now that they're here, i really cant decide. No matter what i choose i will have to part with even more money just to get the compatibility with my other hardware and im not keen on that. The thought of looking for a high end '10 model is nagging at the back of my brain now...

"Now even at home they're forcing us to use an adapter."

Take your time reading.

My mistake. But seriously, this isn't a bad thing? FireWire is really on it's way out, it's supported if you need it on the new high speed connectors with an adapter. I don't view that as a negative. if I really need firewire (which I do on my Drobo) I can pop $30 or whatever and have it.

You are missing the point, I buy thinner tv because it's still have the damn connections as before. When I buy new TV it doesn't say, "here it's thinner but you don't get HDMI connection". Apple have made it thinner at the cost of optical drive and if you can't see that then you will not understand why everyone is complaining

Looks like no user upgradeable RAM on the 21.5'' ?

I am sooo glad I won 400 bucks at the casino the other night because I could have only afforded the 21.5" prior to this. I feel for those not getting the 27" really do. I'm getting a base model 27" Fusion drive and will upgrade the ram on my own at a later time. I'm happy they finally announced it and it'll be my first ever iMac so I'm appy to get t - anything will beat my old Gateway PC at this point :)

I'm gonna get myself a 27" iMac with 768 GB SSD.

The way I see it, if you never play games the graphics card will never be very important to you. I would choose the new iMac over a thicker iMac with a more powerful graphics card any day.

I don't care if I can't open up my iMac. If I wanted to rebuild my computer from time to time I would get a PC. I think Apple is definitely headed in the right direction. Design trumps power for a lot of people, simple as that. And that doesn't mean those people are stupid or naive. It just means that we use our computers differently. And Apple courts us and I love that.

Love it and will definitely be buying a maxed 27 inch, but here are my complaints:

It looks really disproportionate now. The chin looked alright before with the thickness, but now that the machine is so thin, the chin looks massive and the display bezel looks super thick. The stand also looks like overkill with how thin it is.

Can't wait to see one in person, though.

$250 for the fusion drive, which comes with 128gb SSD, when a 128gb SSD on the market is $90.

i'll stick with my SSD + HDD 2011 rig thank you very much.

Plus who the hell wants the computer decide what to put on the SSD for you??? So if all the sudden I want to use something at a faster speed, I have to open and close the program 5 times so it gets transferred on to the SSD?

Great for complete computer illiterates, terrible for power users.

Happy with it.

I'm a graphic designer in the market for a 27 inch iMac and the specs looks great for what I will use it for. I'm not a desktop gamer and I'm not after the most powerful computer in the world. What the new iMac offers me is basically all I need - the thin design looks great, but its not at all important in my decision to buy it.

I think a lot of the moaners on here maybe miss the point of the iMac. It is the workhorse of the design industry. Every design studio or office I've ever been in use iMacs or Mac Pros. Apple will be fully aware of this and will definitely tailor their iMacs to lucrative markets such as this rather than the casual home user/gamer etc.

It seems to me they have slowed down the HDD speed. That along with built in RAM, no optical drive and what appears to be a $100 price increase I don't see any reason to get rid of my 2011 21.5" 2.5 Ghz Quad for 200 Mhz and a larger, but slower HDD.

Oh but it's thin. That's got to be a huge benefit... Right?
