Happy with it.

I'm a graphic designer in the market for a 27 inch iMac and the specs looks great for what I will use it for. I'm not a desktop gamer and I'm not after the most powerful computer in the world. What the new iMac offers me is basically all I need - the thin design looks great, but its not at all important in my decision to buy it.

I think a lot of the moaners on here maybe miss the point of the iMac. It is the workhorse of the design industry. Every design studio or office I've ever been in use iMacs or Mac Pros. Apple will be fully aware of this and will definitely tailor their iMacs to lucrative markets such as this rather than the casual home user/gamer etc.

Get the option with the turbo boost to 3.9GHz. Adobe will love you for it.

No for me. Thinner was not surprising but I was hoping it wouldn't be. Not really huge that the optical drive is missing for me, but they could have used that space on the old design for more goodies.

Don't hate it and don't like it. Meh for me.

I'm gonna get myself a 27" iMac with 768 GB SSD.

The way I see it, if you never play games the graphics card will never be very important to you. I would choose the new iMac over a thicker iMac with a more powerful graphics card any day.

I don't care if I can't open up my iMac. If I wanted to rebuild my computer from time to time I would get a PC. I think Apple is definitely headed in the right direction. Design trumps power for a lot of people, simple as that. And that doesn't mean those people are stupid or naive. It just means that we use our computers differently. And Apple courts us and I love that.

I agree, your right. Sorry for potentially referring to you as naive earlier. I just wish Apple catered to the power hungry prosumers instead of the "design trumps power" people. Because I know Apple can and does make EXCEPTIONAL products but currently they are gunnin' for a different market.

Maybe the 2013 Mac Pro will be a boss hog and a half but it'll prolly cost just short of $5,000 after a screen :(

The design is absolutely beautiful, I never would've imagined it could be so thin. But Apple really made this a consumer machine again, I was hoping for some new pro features, but AAPL really wants to force us to buy a mac pro for doing anything intense, so thats what I'll be doing when the new one comes out.

Is this the longest announce to ship time Apple has ever done? (the 27" version)

The new Mini will not have any dedicated GPU across the board. I wonder why, since the form is exactly the same.

No idea. That's one of things I don't care about. Any GPU will do for my needs (Lightroom, Photoshop, Cubase/ProTools).

I need good screens, fast main drive, lots of storage, max RAM, Firewire...well and a CD drive/burner...

I would imagine you could hit $3000 pretty quickly with a maxed out 27" unit. More with the 680 vid card. Still compared to a Mac Pro (if there ever is a new one) it's not bad considering you get a 27" screen with the deal.

From an purely aesthetic point of view

Bleeeeew!

Tim: "look how thin is it!" yeah what's that bulge in the middle? (u geek don't need to tell me the physics, this is a purely aesthetic critique as titled).

It a big iPhone1, remember iPhone1? Thin at the edge, bulge toward the middle, it's like going backwards.

And that huge CHIN! Comeon, that's like real estate wasted for an Apple Ad. Not tasteful and waste of screen real estate.

My 0.02.

It seems to me they have slowed down the HDD speed. That along with built in RAM, no optical drive and what appears to be a $100 price increase I don't see any reason to get rid of my 2011 21.5" 2.5 Ghz Quad for 200 Mhz and a larger, but slower HDD.

Oh but it's thin. That's got to be a huge benefit... Right?

I agree. Now my question is buy a 2011 entry refurb or a 'new' one from MacMall. What would be the pros/cons for that?

As a 21.5 mid 2011 owner I think it's a good step-up with doubling the ram to 8GB and an improved processor etc but there's really nothing to tempt me getting one of these.

I have to echo what a lot of people have said about the thin screen, the iMac is a desktop so that is absolutely no benefit to me. Don't get me wrong, for other Apple products (laptops/ipads/iphones) it is impressive from both a design and functional perspective but it shouldn't be the main selling point with a desktop.

My iMac is in the corner of a room where no one can see the thickness of the screen (and I'd feel a bit weird showing people how "thin" my desktop is).

I love the iMac and there are some very welcome improvements like the fusion drive/usb 3 etc and it doesn't bother me that the optical drive has gone (we are in 2012) but I don't understand the focus on or benefits of the "ultra thin design".

Actually the best thing here is the reduced glare, like with the MacBook Pro retina. That is by far the most important thing for me.
...

I've waited to purchase an Thunderbolt display to see what new features appeared in this refresh. Reduced glare is the very one I've been hoping to see.

It looks shît. It is a razor sharp pregnant lady with a beard.

For me it had to be more masculine:
sharp edges (please drop the round corners that only suit mobile devices in pockets).
black anodized
flat instead of curved. Just 2 or 3 cm thick and rectangular.
A bit of NeXT cube design ethos.

Wait....
They just had to stuff a computer in the IBM T221 monitor. That is one sexy thing for your desk. It also has the retina panel we expected today. 3840x2400 in the T221 is a nice resolution.

The biggest WTF for me is no Firewire, but the mini does

The mini had the lazy update, as expected. Apple could have increased profit by 20% on the Mini if it ditched all the empty space inside. You know, the thing can still fit a DVD player and a GPU, both gone now. And since Ivy also means USB 3, they basically just replaced the processor.

Are you saying Adobe Creative suite will run alot better with the i7 processor instead of the i5? I started a thread asking about this but so far the responses have been telling me it's really doesn't make a difference and that i7s are only for 'curing cancer'.:confused::confused:

Look, faster is ALWAYS better, no matter what you may hear otherwise. It's a matter of how much does it cost. It is always better to buy a little bit faster than you can afford.

Sorry but I'm just not impressed with "thin". Thin doesn't make a computer work any better and it might make it run worse. Thin isn't even noticeable as you're using a computer.

Granted that Apple computers are fashion accessories I would trade "thin" for better cooling and easily removable hard drives.

Other than that the new iMac look like pretty good machines.

Weird thing is, you can't buy the new iMac from the online store until November/December, but you can't buy the current one either!!!

Operational fail? Or are they seriously not gonna sell iMacs until next month?
