My Android phone is randomly rebooting 3-4 times per day so I will be getting whatever Apple releases. I was going to get the iPhone 4 about a month ago, but the iPhone 5 rumors were enough to make me wait. Still waiting and really getting upset at my POS Droid. If Apple releases the IP4S then releases the IP5 early next year, I'll just jailbreak and sell the IP4S and get the IP5 for full retail.

There might be a mob with pitchforks that forms outside the Apple campus after the announcement, me included. ;)

Seriously though, I can imagine the audience going "d'ohhhhhhhhhh" (or something similar) when Tim Cook says "...and we kept the same lovely design..."

Or, an awkward silence.

Either way, I highly doubt Apple would be stupid enough to release a "4S" after 15 months. It sounds very, very un-innovative. They would have shot down the iPhone redesign rumors immediately (like they did about any early September event) if they had no plans of releasing either a redesigned iPhone, or no iPhone at all.

What do I think will happen if it's just a minor update to the iPhone this year? There's gonna be an Internet crapstorm, that's a foregone conclusion. If Apple had released it in June and it was a minor update, it wouldn't have been that much of a surprise. I think the extended wait time this year has got people pumped up for something much more, whether this expectation is justified or not.

For my part, I am probably in for an iPhone 5 even if it is a minor update, as I'm one of those "odd year" adopters. I bought the original iPhone in Feb '08 when they launched the 16GB capacity model. I skipped the iPhone 3G and bought a 3GS on launch day in 2009 -- greatly appreciated the processing speed, RAM bump and autofocusing camera. Then I skipped the iPhone 4 last year and am currently off contract.

Frankly, I've been salivating for the past year over many of the features that the iPhone 4 already has, most notably the Retina display. (I do a lot of reading on my phone and pixel density is of the utmost importance.) While I found myself pulling my hair over the slowness of my original iPhone after less than a year of ownership, I have been very happy with my 3GS for the entire 27 months I've owned it. For that reason, I'd be fine with another 3GS-style spec bump in this year's iPhone. Give us the A5, more RAM and a 1080p camera and I'm upgrading, hands down. I'm sure there will be a few additional surprises too.

Bring on the official announcement! :apple:

If only a 4S is announced (meaning no redesign) I'd imagine people would go crazy and organize a riot in the Apple store...

In all seriousness, I think people would complain in these forums for a while. Then they'll get over it. People will still buy it like hotcakes, including me since I'm putting up with this piece of crap Nokia that I have.

Sold my iphone and if just a 4s then I probably will wait till next year and just keep using an inspire I won. Been using it for a few weeks and not a bad phone really. Good music sound and movies look nice.

iPhone 3GS is the second best-selling smartphone of 2011 in the U.S, and that is over two years old and was only available on a single carrier. Again, it looked exactly the same as the 3G and it still sells. Apple tried to hype a video camera and compass, BIG WHOOP! But it still sold.

If iPhone 4 is "old" now to some, it doesn't mean it is old to millions of others. To millions of people who live in a third world country and run on prepaid, any iPhone model is still "new" to them.

Depending on which old phone you have and are due for an upgrade, you will get different answers. Alot of people are coming from different platforms and cycles of their contract. If you have an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, then some won't care for the latest one. If you never owned an iPhone or coming from a crappy Android or BlackBerry, then 4S or whatever it is called will still be fine to some and perhaps be a huge upgrade to them.

Other than me not buying it? I think Apple's stock price will tank 5-10% and the Wall St analysts will start in on the "Apple is doomed now that SJ is gone" bandwagon.

Honestly though they will keep losing out marketshare to Android if that's the case.

If it's a 4S only then MR forum will be littered with angry threads for about a month. And rightfully so.

However the 4S would simply become the new king. Despite all the Android competitors (and the bigger screens) I still don't think any phone on the market would be overall superior to a hypothetical 4S.

Also we probably would not see a 6th generation iPhone until summer 2012 at the earliest. At that point we would absolutely see a redesign if 4S becomes a reality in a few weeks.

Forget any rumors, I'm going with my gut here and stating that we are getting a 4S and 5. It just feels like the time to refresh the look of the iPhone. No matter how awesome that retina display is (and it is), 3.5" is just lame in the fall of 2011. But if the 4S is the only thing unveiled will I be surprised? Of course not. Just frustrated and annoyed.

Exactly :)

Steps that will happen if next iPhone is only a spec bump:

1. Won't be buying it
2. Doesn't matter
3. ?????
4. PROFIT

I don't think we'll see a "Boo" moment, because the entire presentation will be a letdown, not just a single moment.

I think if Apple releases the 4S phone, we still won't see a true update until next fall. There are many people still buying the current iPhone 4 each day, even with the next phone coming soon. It doesn't make any difference to most consumers unless they currently have an iPhone 4.

That's because most people don't have a clue what is going on with tech, and don research before they buy. They believe product updates are random chance events.

Just a few days back my brother in law was saying he had dropped his 3Gs in a bucket of water while in the garden and was going to got out and get a iP4 this weekend.

When I said, why not wait a couple of weeks until we hear what's what with the iPohne 5, his reply was: "There's going to be a new iPhone coming out?"….. Yes, I say, every year.

I want an iPhone 5, not a 4S just like the other people here.

I may still upgrade to the 4S, but on the other hand if all they are going to offer is the A5 (Which in my opinion, really didn't make much of a difference in the iPad 2) and an 8Mp camera then i am much more likely to prepay for the PS Vita. That's what it comes down to for me.

It amazes me how people have yet to figure this out too. They all seem so surprised when it's announced.

I wont buy the next iPhone if it is just a bump in specs. I do not play 3D games that would require a faster processor. For what I use it for I have no complaints, except for that the notifications kill the battery.

Well, I'm still buying it. I want the latest iPhone every year. It'd still sell MILLIONS first weekend.

All Apple needs to do for a 4S is add a bigger screen, same design as iPhone 4, A5, 8MP camera, and iOS 5 and people will go crazy. Hell, all it needs is a bigger screen and people will buy it for that fact alone.

Millions of people around the world will line up in front of Apple and various cellular carrier stores around the world. They will be sold out for weeks.

These forums will be raging with hate against apple for not redesigning it.

Apple's stock will climb through the roof.

I won't buy it cause my iPhone 4 is still an amazing device.

I think a lot of people will switch to Android and that's why I hope Apple pulls out an iPhone 5

Ive sold my SGS2 and have a buyer for my iPhone 4 so I am completely ready for the iPhone 5. However, i am now starting to fear that we may be getting a iPhone 4S. Im beginning to believe this 'delay' was due to them trying to do too much and so the iPhone 5 may have been pushed off the cards for this year.

Thing is, if its just an iPhone 4 with a better camera and faster processor I cant waste £499 on that! Firstly the iPhone 4 takes lovely pics, and secondly my iPhone 4 has never slowed down or lagged in any way to make me think "I could do with a faster processor" - its super fast. High specs are for crappy android phones which really need them in an attempt to run the Android OS smoothly.

Right now, if we get a 4S I will have lost a great deal of faith in Apple, and will use the money towards a holiday for next year.

The optimistic iPhone lover in me tells me that Apple will show 2 phones. I hope that is the case!

Agreed. I sold my S2 too. Anyways, I skipped all of the iPhones and did away with iPod Touch + crappy Nokia all these past years. This year I'm buying the next iPhone once and for all. I can do with the next iPhone just having upgraded internals.

I can see it now, October 4th, "Hi everybody thanks for coming, Im Tim Cook and today we would like to talk about our latest iPhone......................the iPhone................4S"

If Tim Cook does this I hope he gets heckled like crazy while up on stage by the reporters in the front row ;)

"Booooooooooooooooo! Hissssssssssssssssss!"

If Apple releases an iPhone 4S, I'll buy two second hand mint iPhone 4 (white and black)

That's what will happen, as far as I'm concerned...

When discussing the 4S, you can't bring a bigger screen into it. A 4S as far as this forum is concerned is the same form factor as the 4 with a 3.5 inch screen and the spec bump you talk about.

there are 2 reports dating back in February that state that the iPhone 4S will have an entirely different look than the current iPhone 4.

Bloomberg
Apple has considered selling the new iPhone for about $200, without obligating users to sign a two-year service contract, said the person who has seen it... While Apple has aimed to unveil the device near mid-year, the introduction may be delayed or scrapped, the person said. The prototype was about one-third smaller than the iPhone 4, and it had no “home” button, said the person, who saw it last year. Apple would sell it at a low price mainly because the smartphone will use a processor, display and other components similar to those used in the current model, rather than pricier, more advanced parts that will be in the next iPhone, the person said.

Wall Street Journal, (the source that broke news of the announcement date of October 4, 2011)
One of the people, who saw a prototype of the phone late last year, said it is intended for sale alongside Apple's existing line. The new device would be about half the size of the iPhone 4, which is the current model. The new phone—one of its code names is N97—would be available to carriers at about half the price of the main iPhones.

on the iPhone 5
The person who saw the prototype of the new iPhone said the device was significantly lighter than the iPhone 4 and had an edge-to-edge screen that could be manipulated by touch, as well as a virtual keyboard and voice-based navigation. The person said Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., also plans to upgrade the iPhone 4.

If 5 not an LTE then it's a no buy. I will not buy the iphone 5 and use it on the pizz poor Verizon 3G data throttling network. LTE or nothing.

I would have said no chance for LTE for iPhone 5. But now it's looking more like a 4S, that might be their big selling point.

If it is a 4S, they won't have put much work into the phone, the A5 already exists in the iPad etc, so they may have just got LTE in there. 16 months to just change internals, it's gotta have more than just the A5 proc, a RAM boost and an 8MP camera.

Maybe it'll be, the iPhone 4GS.
