I would have said no chance for LTE for iPhone 5. But now it's looking more like a 4S, that might be their big selling point.

If it is a 4S, they won't have put much work into the phone, the A5 already exists in the iPad etc, so they may have just got LTE in there. 16 months to just change internals, it's gotta have more than just the A5 proc, a RAM boost and an 8MP camera.

Maybe it'll be, the iPhone 4GS.

The other problem is it may not initially be available on Verizon. Could be just a GSM phone, with the iPhone 5 the phone for all the networks.

But the Verizon phone already has a Qualcomm chip that supports CDMA and GSM, so I doubt it would be that difficult to modify it for LTE.

Echo others! If it is a 4S or a 5 without LTE and NFC then Apple's flagship product is toast. Worse, it's new CEO is forever wounded. Given the earned roll that Apple has been on, a new CEO cannot survive starting out with a total disaster. He won't last until Spring. The stock price and Apple's fantastic reputation will be trashed....maybe forever in this tech sprint to hell.

Make no excuses..this thing is already an unmitigated disaster. Anybody here think Apple delayed announcement of an iPhone upgrade until too late in the year because they think it's smart? No marketing person wants to announce in the 4th quarter. It's a plan for certain failure. If that announcement is far below expectations, hold on to your behind. The execution party will assemble. Maybe Tim Cook can still get his name in at HP.

I'll wait two more weeks to see, but at that time I'm buying a phone with LTE. NFC might be difficult, but I'll try at least. Surely Steve Jobs did not leave this potential losing game changer to a new relief pitcher. Did he?

If the iPhone 5 is being delayed until 2012, will it be delayed until next Fall? Or will it come out earlier next year? Do you think that this will affect Tim Cook's image as the new CEO of Apple? What do you think?

Yes, this will affect the image of Tim Cook for sure. Apple made him CEO with no apparent rush, so why would they put a new guy in charge when they only have an 'underwhelming' product (i.e. '4s') for him to introduce at his first keynote?

I have read about those Apple job postings for 'iPhone/iPad Security' (product leaks etc., not OS), that Apple bolts its devices in their labs now, plus, wasn't Tim Cook the master of supply chain management at Apple?

If there's a time for him to shine, then it's the next keynote. I'm pretty sure that the next iPhone will be the iPhone 5 for the aforementioned reasons: it has taken long enough to be a major update and people will have even more respect for Mr. Cook when he pulls out a great device pretty much out of nowhere.

Good golly miss molly... talk about a drama queen! ;):p:D

What will happen? Nothing.

They'll still sell in massive numbers like always. Those who complain now will rollover and submit like Apples programmed them to do.

Apple knows this very well.

Can't see that would be a successful sale if there are going to launch iPhone 4S ONLY!

However, I expect strongly that iPhone 4S doesn't exist, but iPod Touch with 3G and GPS that will support iMessage-ing.

"Good golly miss molly... talk about a drama queen! "

Right!!

You read the specs on Samsung Galaxy S2 and tell me that an iPhone 5 without either NFC or 4G will be competitive. Not for 1 minute do I think Apple will release a iP5 without both, but if they do the stock will drop 30% in a week. There's no drama queen in that obvious scenario.

If the new iPhone is a 4S (and it looks almost certain it is) then I won't be too happy, I don't like the iPhone 4 design at all and it definately needs a bigger screen.

It's looking like the iPhone 5 is infact delayed until 2012.

My predictions:
iPhone 4s doesn't exist. These are test models with iPhone 4 shells so they don't draw attention.
iPhone 5 with the actual newly designed shell only stays on apple campus.
October 4th we see a redesigned iPhone 5.

I wonder if there were originally 2 iphones the 4S(cheaper) and the 5 which may not come out due to production issues. Are we going to get the 4S for the cheaper price, or will Apple charge the normal rate due to the 5 not being placed on the market?

Will the iPhone 4S sell like crazy? Sure. Would the iPhone 5 sell more? Yes.

I think it's fair to say by now that Apple knows what is going on around the world about the next phone the release. They also know that although the 4S would sell like crazy, there are millions of users who would look at it, then down at their 4, then back at the 4S and go "meh, nothing special".

Although they have a history of making what THEY believe is the best product not necessarily what certain consumers want, i find it hard to believe that Jobs would pass off the company (as others have stated) to a new CEO with a product that isnt going to blow the lid off the mobile phone market. There is a lot riding on this phone, and apple knows it.

This. That's what I've been saying all along.

I have a year left on my current contract for my iPhone 4 so I won't be doing anything. I won't upgrade again until the 4G capable model is released next year.

Wow, like drama much?

There's a lot of people that are still on the 3GS that will likely upgrade no matter what. First of all, I still don't see this as a delay. They never said it was coming out at a certain time and then changed it. You ASSUMED that it would be out at a certain time. And I'm curious about what you mean by "too late in the year." Too late for what? How is announcing it now a plan for certain failure? Yes, some people will whine and complain (which always happens anyways), but millions will still buy it, and it will still be profitable. I just don't get the whole gloom and doom thing.

All of this crying about not releasing a new phone at the same time as previous years is funny. When did they release the Verizon 4? That surely wasn't the "usual" schedule.

I can see the frustration if with the "delay" if only a 4s is released. But some of the hysteria here is quite over the top. Cook looking for a new job? That's funny.

I agree with the previous poster that there are many who have a iPhone 3Gs or even a 3G that would gladly upgrade to an iPhone 4S.

My guess is that this whole delay with the iPhone 4S was because of the white iPhone 4 coming out this year and in addition to getting iOS 5 ready for the next iPhone release.

So I don't think we will see a redesign until next year but I'm hoping I'm wrong. I'd like to see more features than the iPad 2 squished into an iPhone 4s with iOS 5 and a better camera.

I woudnt buy it. No excuse for apple to spend 15 months on an upgrade that took 2 weeks to implement. That is what I call the lazy way out. Not that the iphone4 is a bad phone but with all the competition out there, apple needs to start doing more than a speed bump/better camera to keep up.

I can't believe apple would drop a 4s on us...

1. new CEO craps the bed first time out. Terrible.

2. 16 months

Just not very apple-like.

I already have the 4, so if the iPhone 4S is announced, I will certainly not upgrade to that. I hadn't planned on upgrading to the the iPhone 5 either. I'm just anticipating iOS 5 release at this point.

A 4S would be a utter disappointment. Especially since Apple has had the 4 on the market for over a year.

They need to bump the screen to 3.7" or maybe even 4".

this is easy

Where's that big button - the 4S will be available on Oct 4 - announcement day ---Corporate likes that - to have the announcement include something available now. And the 5 will be announced and available for preorder a couple weeks out - available pre Thanksgiving to really hit the holiday season. Can someone push that big button now ??

With no real iPhone 5 leaks, if Tim Cook pulls out a newly redesigned phone it's going to be shear pandemonium.

It's either the worlds best kept secret or the biggest disappointment.
