I didn't use the word "fair" I said "I can't speak for every country but I don't feel like in the UK I'm being charged an extortionate difference."

The actual amount being spent in the USA will vary by state, whereas in the UK it's fixed because sales tax is uniform around the country. So my previous figures were not exact, but as a rough guide I'm personally not upset about a less than $100 difference
Okay, well… I did the maths and I’ll have to pay around USD $400 more for the model I want due to taxes… but again, you’re okay with that, and I’m not. That’s okay. Difference of opinion 🤷‍♂️

Ok just seen the keynote
Very underwhelming. I have the 15pm and I need to upgrade to 512gb
But I can’t see what’s changed??
Same screen, minor size increase
Slightly faster processor
Camera control
4k120 video

And that’s pretty much it??
Even the Apple Watches and AirPods barely improved either ……I know people say this every time but I really can’t see all those “innovations” they talk about
The AirPods Pro have become personalised hearing aids, that's a pretty cool and innovative change.

The iPhone had a pretty substantial upgrade, especially when we take into account the hardware changes in support of AI.

Also I accept it may not sound like much, but the Pro's ability to layer voice notes is a really cool addition. I'm only a hobby musician, but one of the most popular tools that musicians use is a looper pedal, which lets you record one thing and then play or sing over the top of it. It's really useful for rehearsing, improvisation, writing songs etc. The iPhone has basically just massively reduced the need to buy a separate one, and has the added benefit of saving those ideas.

Why are you struggling to read my posts? I haven't said any such thing — I said the difference for me is less than $100 and I'm okay with that. Your price difference is more than 4x higher. I also said, twice, that I am only able to speak for the price in my country.

Eh. This is what happens when they commit themselves to doing iPhone hardware updates every single year -- some of them are gonna be more incremental and some are gonna be bigger. This just gets their whole line up to the RAM requirements for the new AI features, with a couple of nice quality of life things like that camera button. They also held the line on pricing, which isn't a given.

Cool that you’d use it but I reckon it’s the nichest of niche functions that, probably 0.1% people would ever use it. But I guess a lot of the pro features are like that. Studio mics, video recording features that most will never touch, the Pro phones really are becoming more and more niche feature sets as most of the “common” features already there

No need to be rude. I get it, every country have different rules. I was just trying to explain that… whatever, you don’t care. Paz ✌️

Yeah exactly, it's a Pro device so those additions will largely be niche. I wouldn't buy the phone for that feature alone but I will make use of it being there. As they mentioned in the keynote, lots of musicians already use that app for recording ideas so it's a very nice enhancement. It's also a good use case for the improved microphones.

no, with respect you weren't just trying to explain, you twice told me that I'm okay with your situation after I explicitly said I was only explaining why I was happy enough with the price that I have to pay.

Not to mention a camera control button that seems in the way. Hopefully you can disable it.
As a lefty that is one of the first things I noticed. Apparently Apple hates the lefties.

My ring finger would rest exactly where that button is. I would imagine it would create a significant amount of false or unintended touches.

If I had to guess Apples response it would be something like, 'Your fingers are designed wrong." 🥲

Apple has rarely made it worthwhile to upgrade every year. Back in the “s” days, they made it kind of obvious with the name itself.

Sure seems like they’re extending even further between major updates these days.i don’t feel like the 16 is that big of a jump over my 14. I could wait another year. But I won’t.

While I’m fairly happy with my 15PM my battery capacity is currently at 88% after a year. I’m on the Apple annual upgrade plan so if I upgrade to the 16PM with the same memory my monthly payments are unchanged. That being the case I’m wondering why not upgrade?
That sounds like Apple math

Be frankly, 15PM is also a minor upgrade compared to 14PM, the only "major" upgrade is 5x, but they cancelled 3x which I find is more useful.

Next year they upgrade 5x sensor to 4800MP, then in 2026 front to 2400MP and 2027 front major to 100M MP.....

If I was not in the iPhone upgrade program, I would most likely skip the 16 Pro Max. I think we will see something major next year.

When you look at it from a year to year perspective, what do you imagine they can do every year to knock your socks off??? The innovations come when you upgrade from a few generations ago to the new.

Haven’t we been saying that for the past 4+ years? Much more likely next year will be yet another bunch of small incremental improvements. But if you wait several years all of those small incremental improvements add up To a significant update.
Exactly. Smartphones are incredibly mature technology now, and if we are being honest even the people who say they’re holding out for something bigger next year can rarely tell us what big changes they’d like to see.

And if there were big changes every year? Well then Apple would be criticised for making it necessary to change phones every year.

The truth is they’re closer to iPads and computers than ever before, in the sense that they don’t need upgrading as often now.
And frankly I think that’s a good thing.

I still have my 2018 12" iPad Pro and still see no reason to upgrade it.

Yep exactly. I had a 4th gen Air that I sold for the M4 Pro but I didn’t strictly need to, that Air was great and it was secondhand when I got it.

I view them like household appliances now — my fridge is 9 years old and it’ll stay there until it breaks or we move house. The TV got replaced when the last one was defective.

Although I do change my phones more often than that, it is almost entirely a choice based on wanting the new version rather than it offering anything that I strictly need.

I draw the line on upgrading when there’s something I value feature wise or price wise. My examples:

2016 MacBook Pro - I am not upgrading this until Apple releases OLED Screen MacBooks (2026?)

2017 iPad Pro 10.5” - I just upgraded this because 2024 iPad Pro got OLED screen and slimmest form factor!

2016 LG OLED 3D 4K TV E series - I won’t upgrade this until the price of a 77” OLED drops below $1400.

2020 iPhone 12 Pro Max - I won’t upgrade this until a significant form factor changes on iPhone such as Slimmer, different camera lens layout, no Dynamic Island, or even increase in RAM.

I know .2" isn't a huge leap but it will be noticeable and I am excited about that.

Camera Control is awesome. I've wanted that for years now.

Apple Intelligence looks super cool.

If you 'need' to upgrade then you have no choice I guess. My biggest complaint this year is the lack of a brighter screen in direct sunlight. But clearly that is gonna come next year.

I have annual upgrade program so why not. Camera controls are very much up my alley; my phone is my main camera and I shoot everything in ProRAW. My guess is thermal performance will also allow for sustained periods of outdoor usage and without the phone getting very warm; the iPad Pro M4 has impressed me thoroughly with its ability to sustain brightness and performance while sitting outside and my guess is that similar design is part of the improved thermals. I’ll take a small increase in screen size.

Here’s the ultimate answer. You need a phone? buy it. You want a phone even if it’s not a need? if you have the money, who cares…just buy it. If you can’t afford it and don’t need it? Why is this conversation a thing then.
