Uhm, I just want a mic. :)

I see a mic almost as a 'given'. Apple does need a mic and while they are at it, please include an internal speaker.

I truly believe this is a piece of hardware that all users are going to use, this should be an 'easy in'. An iPod has always been missing being able to record audio. I use my Creative Zen as a voice recorder, and it gets used a lot just for that sole reason. It replaces a voice recorder that I may need for work - It's great.

...let's see it in an iPod Touch

Isn't there already an internal speaker in the iTouch 2nd gen?

If Apple adds a camera, and the data capabilities people are whining for, whats the point of the iPhone? How can most justify buying it? Camera? Common across devices. Network? Well people are convinced it will come with 3G for app downloading. So toss Skype on there and you have a phone. Oh and GPS? Yeah, people think that is coming to the iTouch also. So the iPhone is useful how? How does that justify the $225 vs $700 price comparison? Think people........

I love the speculation people regurgitate here with no fact to support it. Its funny. Everyone is so convinced so many things are coming through the pipe. Front facing camera, camera on the iTouch, matte 3G S backing, 3G on the iPod Touch. I will just sit here and smile every time the new devices are released, but avoid posting links back to my previous posts that state there is no way Apple will implement these features, and saying "I told you so". Just remember, every time Apple releases a product that doesn't have a feature you wanted, think about how uberamd tried to convince you that it wasn't going to happen in the first place.

I don't think any reasonable person, with a legit argument, said there will be a front facing camera, GPS, or 3G - I mean people on this thread said it, but they are clearly naive.

The only reasonable things to come, in my opinion, is a camera, the new screen (like the 3G S), and possibly a mic. I don't expect all those to be implemented on the 3rd Gen - but within the next 2 cycles.

But like you said, come September, we'll wait and see - and the "I told you so"s will come.

there is...people are looking for one that could be justifiably a 'good speaker.'

Have you listened to the one on the 2nd Gen. Does it 'cut it' for you? ...it pretty much is worthless! It kills your battery, and is not really usable - I usually expect something better from Apple...

The speaker on my Creative Zen(x-fi) blows it away...Apple will definitely upgrade the internal speaker - without a doubt...and add a mic...

The iPod Touch is really missing these feature to bring it in line with the iPhone. This could theoretically happen very soon:
- An oleophobic screen.
- Additional storage, 64GB would be great.
- Improved graphics chipset

I personally think it is missing:
- FM Radio
- Expandable storage (Apple will never do this)
- Improved speaker
- Screen customisation (Black is a boring background Apple...)
- Better App management
- Decent network video streaming for those who own :apple:TV's or who have bought lots on the iTMS through their computer/laptop.

It doesn't need a camera, and it really doesn't need GPS. Most modern phones come with either. If you want to carry less, then just ditch both and get an iPhone. I am firmly in the "it's an 'iPod Touch', not a 'iPhone Almost'."

Most modern phones come with address books, calendars, and internet access. Actually, quite a few of them play music too, so why have an iPod at all?

I would like the Adobe Flash. I don't have an iPod Touch yet, planning on getting it after the summer but know people with the Touch and have heard them say about things on the internet that need Adobe Flash and that makes sense to me. A camera isn't necessary as most people have that on their phones. GPS sounds good.

Apple seem to be trying to do their damnedest to kill Flask and Java[1] in general, so I'd honestly be surprised if Flash support arrives on the iPhone/Touch.

It's speculation, dude. It's what people think is going to show up. There doesn't need to be facts to support it. Some are more plausible than others. No need to be so arrogant about it.

I wholeheartedly agree with you about all that is missing, I would just include a mic. And maybe for expandable storage, they could incude an SD slot, but I think you're right - apple won't do that.

Only part we disagree - is about the camera.

Adding a camera would serve a lot of different purposes. For one, you can take pics now(duh). So, you have a camera now, and yes almost every phone has a camera, but that can actually be a moot point, because we are theoretically talking about what 'apple products' can do to a photo with their endless amount of apps, and its' usage >>>Innovation, innovation, innovation! Apple can innovate a whole new world. They did it with the release of the iPod & iPod Touch, iPhone(s), and there is more innovation coming from 3rd party developers. Implementing a camera/videocamera creates an unlimited amount of apps coming from 3rd-party developers, ultimately generating more money for apple. So the iPhone has this, but the iPod Touch does not... Is this smart?

I see money to be easily made... First, there are millions and millions of people who do not have an iPhone due to the network carrier they are on(apple is working on that). Second, there are also millions of people on AT&T network who do not have an iPhone because of - cost of monthly expense, no need for internet on phone, too big, high initial cost, etc(apple can not do anything about this). But, everyone still wants 'the apple product.'

That is a Market Oppurtunity...and :apple: can innovate upon the iPod Touch and make quick dough with slight cost.

...if an iPhone was sold on every cellular network, I would think differently.

...a camera is a big plus ;)

I'd like to see …

Keynote running natively on the iPod touch,
the ability to send the keynote via video-out to the beamer,
the ability to control the presentation with the remote.

To all the people saying "If you want X feature, get an iPhone" we would have one if it were right for us. This is a thread about what you want on the Touch so throwing out ideas is the point. If you don't agree with something, that's fine, but don't act like we're wrong for throwing out suggestions.

I'm sure you wish to have a mini projector for it as well...:p

By natively, you mean, you could create a keynote doc on your iPod Touch?...Would you want pages as well? ...it's interesting to think that, because if they incorporate their iLife and iWork to run on an iPod Touch or iPhone, they need a fairly nice processor, GPU, and some ok RAM.

...I see some pros ;)

You think the iPod Touch could handle Keynote now with its' current specs?

I really think that the naysayers who are always saying "the iPod touch is a music device" no longer have an argument. The device is a multimedia device, to the max. It's not a phone, so let's be clear with that. As such, 3G, which is commonly associated with phone contracts, may be unlikely (though yes, I know a few netbooks have 3G out there). However, anything else is open territory for the Touch. So a camera, video camera, compass, iPhone 3G S - like performance, GPS, bluetooth, etc. etc. is possible. The other argument I am tired of is the whole iPod Touch vs. iPhone "product differentiation" argument. The iPhone already has 3G, voice, and texting, via a cell phone contract. What more product differentiation do you need?
We pretty much settled this last year. I'm surprised the argument is still going on. All I'm going to do now is wait until September when the touch and nano may get cameras (they appear to be right about the iPhone part).

It's an iPod. Its not a camera. Its not a video camera. Its a music device that plays applications. The calling for a camera is silly, as it just makes no sense having on one on a iPod touch. Unless of course you want the device price to skyrocket like the $700 iPhone costs. The iPod Touch is .33 inches thick, iPhone is .48 inches thick. The camera is pretty tall so it would add thickness to the device as well.

Makes no sense. And yes, I own a iPod Touch and iPhone. I don't see why you don't just admit you want the iPhone, minus the phone calling ability for the same price of $200. Thats what it boils down to. Good luck.

This isn't true anymore. It is not 'just an ipod', it is an all new computing platform. Constraining it to be 'just an ipod' is a mistake. Not everyone can get an iPhone for various reasons, and the iPod Touch should be a close second.

These arguments have existed in one form or another since before the iPod touch was released.

I didn't think the iPod touch would have wi-fi or Safari, but that was before it was released.

I believe this is what we will see from the third-generation iPod touch.

1: A better processor, same as the iPhone 3GS
2: 8GB model dropped in favor of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models
3: Slight price reduction - 16GB $199, 32GB $349, 64GB $399
4: Metal buttons (as the iPhone 3G first had)
5: Improved screen (same as the iPhone 3GS)

I believe it would look something like this:

ipod31.png

Metal Home button, volume & sleep buttons metal just like the iPhone but in the same position as the previous iPod touch.

Here is the iPhone 3GS for comparison:

compare-iphone-3g-s-screen.jpg

I do not believe we will receive GPS or a camera. Those are flagship features of the iPhone 3GS. A microphone would render the new headphones + microphone product useless, and would promote the use of the iPod as a phone, rather than the actual iPhone.

larger capacity. i would get an ipod touch but it's not large enough to hold my 50GB of music, perhaps once the 64GB touch comes out ill consider it

I would like to able to sync it via wireless. Let me load stuff from my iTunes library from the iPod and also send stuff from the computer. As long as its on the same network it should be trivial.

Also transcoding and streaming video from iTunes to the iPod would be nice as well.

I vote that it's missing a phone.

That's why I have a 32GB iPhone 3GS and not an iPod Touch.

You didn't give the option in the poll, but I voted with my wallet.

so now I see the demand for video recording is surging by iphone 3Gs. it says 400% increase on youtube? I think that iphone 3Gs is not only device to do that. there are lots of ipod touch users as well. they want to take pictures, and record video as well. so next upgrade will be adding camera with video capability. I think that it is obvious. since 3.0 software dropped voice memo app, it means that you need microphone to do that. of course, you can use headphone set. but it's not enough, and sometimes is inconvenient. so I hope that it will add mic just like iphone.

I think that those two major features are high demand. so it's obvious that Apple will add features for next ipod touch. other fact like battery life, more stable wifi connection, improved graphic will be just bonus.

Hahaha. Why would the device skyrocket in price? And im quite sure the iPhone doesn't cost $700 dollars. What you're saying in this little rant of how you think Ipod touch getting a camera is crazy doesn't make sense. Because the iPod plays music and Applications but doesn't have a phone..it doesn't need a camera? Hmm doesn't quite make sense that just because you have a phone you need a camera, but when you don't have a phone a camera is out of the question? Re-think buddy. Hard. Because adding a camera to the "Funnest iPod yet" is just silly! Right?
