Well the current 8GB touch costs around $70.00 to make I think. It won't be too hard.

Its not about costs to make. There are numerous other costs that go into a device, and that is why teardown costs are most annoying. Costs like research and development, shipping, packaging, and everything else along the line gets neglected. Its not about "Oh these parts only ran apple $70", thats only one piece in the puzzle.

They already researched it. The camera research has been done for the 3GS. All they need to do is move the damn camera to the touch. Make the touch thicker, adding more RAm and a faster processor (already researched and now in the 3GS) and bring it to the touch. They already researched the stuff. It is in the iPhone. Just bring it the the damn touch already.

You are over-simplifying a complex economical and technical problem.

Don't be in too much of a rush. Let Apple fix the overheating issues in the iPhone before they release the new Touch.

Someone mentioned this in another thread..

Something similar to the kindles whispernet meaning the iPod Touch w/ 3G via AT&T network allowing you to access the itunes and appstore for free anytime. Anything like surfing the web, youtube, internet radio, etc would occur data charges that will be billed to your itunes account.

the overheating issues are caused by the new OS. i can prove this as my friend's touch updated to 3.0 felt a lot hotter while playing games than when he had 2.2.1.

If the OS is using the hardware more and that generates more heat, it just exposes the heat problem. Any game or app might push the hardware just as much. The issue is how well the hardware dissipates heat.

seeing how thin the touch is, it isn't surprising that it is using more power( thus more heat) its most likely due to push notifications as it might be using the wifi chip more. i doubt its games as i played the same game on 2.2.1 and that ran cool.

it is also missing the free firmware updates that iphone users get... i wish they were free and that i won't have shell out 10 more bucks for a product i already paid for. i imagine 10 bucks isn't much but it becomes a lot when you don't have a credit card or a proper job. Haha. tried to get a job this summer. i got turned down by many places. not trying to hijack this thread tho. plz continue discussion of the 3rd gen touch. just my rant.

I sincerely doubt Apple would be interesting in getting into this with the iPod Touch. Perhaps with whatever new touch device is in the pipeline, but not the iPod.

Where did you hear about the gov't getting involved to standardize micro USB port on cellphones? ...I am interested to know.

...I am surprised I did not hear about it yet.

CrackBookPro:cool:

Turns out it's a EU thing (sorry for the mix up) and Apple is on board. There are a number of stories on it lately.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/29/nokia-apple-rim-and-others-agree-on-micro-usb-phone-charger-st/

Even so, I think Apple would be crazy to create divergent hardware lines over a micro usb port, so we'll see it here too.

3G network is the true incentive!

All this camera and microphone talk is surprising me. Really, it is. Why? Because the iPhone 3G S costs $600. The iPod Touch (16GB for comparison purposes) costs $300. The price difference between those two devices: $300. So where does that $300 price difference get made up? Camera, microphone, 3G, calling abilities. Yet for whatever reason a LOT of people are convinced the iPod Touch will see all these features rolled into it (sans the calling abilities, and possibly 3G yet some still think that is coming). Really? Think about this, you are expecting a $229 piece of hardware (since that is the low end iPod Touch model) to contain features from Apple's flagship phone? For a $0 price increase? Hm, some logic seems off there.

Where is the incentive to buy a iPhone then?

Uberamd, your posts have some good points, but you have to understand that the iPhone is a communication device, and the iPod Touch was first & foremost an MP3 player, but it now is ultimately 100%, a multimedia device.

...so to answer your question, "Where is the incentive to buy an iPhone then?" ...To simplify, right now, it's the AT&T 3G service!

The communication device (iPhone) has a cellular network - 3G. Not having 3G is and would be, a huge product differentiation. One thing in general about GPS and cellphones - is the GPS chip and the cellular network work together. The iPhone's GPS works off of a GPS chip in addition to 3G to give your phone an actual position point. So, GPS in an iPod Touch problably won't happen. It could (theoretically) - with just a GPS chip alone (it will suck though), but to get a true GPS plot, the GPS chip needs the 3G as well. The other issue you raised is a camera. A camera, is by no means at all, even close to what should differentiate the iPhone from the iPod Touch. A camera is a useful feature for both models, and merely the addition of the camera is a smart business decision, because you will have more users buying apps for photos. If they do indeed add a camera, you will see people using the camera and the apps as an integral part of their time & usage. It will be even more clear why - the iPod Touch is "the funnest iPod ever." In the end, you may be right! Apple may not include a camera, but if I were a "betting man", I truly believe Apple has seen 'the light at the end of the tunnel' and will include the camera because of consumer preference, and also because of an overall business decision.

The iPod Touch does not have a communications data plan, ultimately making a huge product differentation. This allows no cellular calls or actual text messaging, and also no 3G service for 'anywhere internet'. The iPod is a MP3 player, and the iPod Touch raised the bar by incorporating some useful features to make it into a multimedia device. You have an MP3 player, but you also have the ability to go buy applications. This is problably the biggest feature of the iPod Touch - the 3rd-party apps. One feature like a camera will not be the sole product differentiation, and more or less, the camera is just a 'want' for a buyer seeking an iPod Touch or an iPhone. A microphone, will be a plus too, but is not even close to the demand of a camera. And if they do have a video, logistically, they need a mic on the actual unit to record audio.

To answer your question, the notion of the incentive to buy is pretty easy and just... so you and I do disagree.

In the other spectrum of 'incentive' vs 'non-incentive' - Right now, the dumbest thing Apple could do with the iPod Touch, would be to make both models have the same amount of storage! The next poor decision, would be to implement 3G at this time because it is still solely for AT&T users (i.e. you're limiting your market). Adding a camera or a mic is not a poor decision, it is a good decision. But, adding 3G and GPS at this time is nonsense for Apple while they are limited to AT&T.

In the end, this is just my opinion. Just like I stated in my previous post (62nd post), if an iPhone was on Verizon, TMobile, etc....I would think differently because there are millions of people who can not purchase an iPhone because they do not have AT&T. Ultimately, making millions of people still want the "apple product." That is a clear market opportunity. In one respect, Apple a couple years back, may indeed knew they needed to create the iPod Touch before the iPhone because they knew there are millions of people who can not get the AT&T iPhone, but would want something very similar. Even though, the iPod Touch came out first, Apple still knew AT&T would limit their iPhone market & acceptance.

...so they released the 1st Gen iPod Touch before the iPhone  The iPod Touch came out first and was for everyone. And on the other hand, the iPhone came out next and was limited to AT&T users. ...there is marketing & market acceptance involved here?

...sometimes things are just coincidences, but when you have Steve Jobs at the helm, you are strategically marketing your product! ;)

Steve Jobs is going to capture the world again in September! - A new OS, a new iPod & iPod Touch, and some "darn new cheap MacBook" of some sort is all going to be introduced in the fall, by the one & only - Steve Jobs :)

Even in this down economy, if I am an Apple shareholder, I want more stock!

CrackBookPro:cool:
p.s. that will be my longest post EVER on here :p ...it took my whole lunch break!

I love my Touch but don't want an iPhone. It doesn't mean I'm cheap. I just bought a new phone and paid as much (or more) than I would have for an iPhone. I don't care for the iPhone as a phone. Also, I use both my phone and Touch often enough that I don't want to have the two devices compete for battery life.

The iPhone isn't an upgrade to the Touch. To me it's the other way around.... my Touch doesn't have some of the undesirable things that the iPhone does.

Exactly. In everyone's minds, if we get a iPod Touch instead of a iPhone its magically because we are too cheap. Because thats the only reason why we wouldn't get the iPhone

/sarcasim.

id like a faster processor. its the only thing in there id really need. im not one for taking lots of pictures unless im on vacation or at a party or somethin like that and for that i have a 10 megapixel Nikon S560. i dont need more space cuz i have a 16 gig and i couldnt even fill it up with movies and anime when i went on vacation for a week. i had plenty on there to keep me occupied..... but of course i lost my cable and my iPod died so i didnt have it for the car ride home >.<

The 1G iPod touch was released in September 2007, the iPhone was released in June. ;)

I can't wait to see the design of this EU micro-usb iPhone...

The European consumer has to be happy for the adoption...I'm trying to think of the pros & cons...

I think apple will make a usb adapter in order to comply. That would be pure insanity to redesign the iPhone to make it look good with a USB on top of leaving all the current users in the dust when they can make an adapter.

With that said the adapter may work with the touch. Which is great because the ipod camera adapter doesn't.

Apple won't give me what I would like to see because of iTunes - cover the bases re audio and video codecs, high quality line-in recording ...

Whilst internal storage will increase, a card slot would be good.

OLED will come.

Battery hatch as part of allowing the user to replace the battery with ease, ha ha ha.

Ultimately I want the iTouch to combine the best of Apple, Cowon, iRiver and Sony.

General question re Apps - people used to trumpet that the Playstation was better because there were more games for it than the other consoles, but how many games did people actually play? The number of Apps is used as a selling point for the iTouch/iPhone - what percentage of downloads do the top 100 Apps account for?

Cheers,
OW

I would like to mention the Archos has 3g and last time I checked it was a media player just like the touch. ;)
