"funnest iPod ever"...???

so now I see the demand for video recording is surging by iphone 3Gs. it says 400% increase on youtube? I think that iphone 3Gs is not only device to do that. there are lots of ipod touch users as well. they want to take pictures, and record video as well. so next upgrade will be adding camera with video capability. I think that it is obvious. since 3.0 software dropped voice memo app, it means that you need microphone to do that. of course, you can use headphone set. but it's not enough, and sometimes is inconvenient. so I hope that it will add mic just like iphone.

I think that those two major features are high demand. so it's obvious that Apple will add features for next ipod touch. other fact like battery life, more stable wifi connection, improved graphic will be just bonus.

better battery life is something I'm surprised we did not see more of...

With the iPod Touch being the so called, "funnest iPod ever", it may in fact get a camera/videocamera just so it can hold onto the impressive "title" it has been claiming :p The mic, on the other hand, I hope will be on the actual device, instead of on the headsets...

It's missing a augmented reality direct-to-brain display unit, as well as a quantum processor, and all those songs I want to find but can't quite remember the name of. :p

The iPod touch is not "missing" anything. It's an amazing little device. What I want is completely different. But no, my iPod plays music, surfs the web, and plays games, which was all it was ever advertised to do.

Actaully Apple took out the ability for it to charge over firewire, and it never has been able to sync over firewire. Just like the MBP 13" I want firewire back!

Haha, that may be the only thing "missing" from it. I remember I tried to charge mine once from an old iHome and it wouldn't work. Yeah, okay, I'll give you that. :p:D

Yes, if the iPod Touch is the premium iPod around apple should pay the few extra cents to go from the chip that only does usb to the one that does both. I mean really, apple invented firewire.

Also my first gen touch doesn't charge over usb anymore having that firewire charging in there is like a lifeboat, a liftboat I don't want to give up when I eventually have to buy a new iTouch.

To all the people saying "If you want X feature, get an iPhone" we would have one if it were right for us. This is a thread about what you want on the Touch so throwing out ideas is the point. If you don't agree with something, that's fine, but don't act like we're wrong for throwing out suggestions.

Thank you. Its funny how when one of these threads come up, we get bombarded by "JUST GET A IPHONE YOUR SO CHEAP!" Its really getting old. Its almost as if people get annoyed if the iTouch gets close in specs (Hardware Wise) to the iPhone. Really? Sorry to disappoint you but, no amount of your rants of how cheap and whiny us iPod Touch owners are, it won't stop Apple from doing whatever the **** they want. Go ahead though, keep telling us how cheap we are! And how adding a camera to the iPod Touch is just crazy!

We'll keep laughing.

USB...very niiice

a USB port!

that would be something everyone on here is in dire for...I could easily see the potential consumer demand, but...

The USB port is unfortunately uncharacteristic of Apple because they want you to buy their cords, and I also think they would not be inclined for simple reasons in addition to business reasons - The fact that adding this port would do something to its' overall design & look would make me thing otherwise, and the wattage will be more secure with no USB port.

No matter what, I would always vote to put it in, but I truly can not see it happening :(

didn't the old iPods have a USB adapter that plugged into the dock connector.

Hmm I wonder if those things would work for the touch and then I could plug in a 3G USB modem. :D

I thought I heard that all cell phones were going to be required to standardize on the micro USB port in the future. The govt was getting involved so people could use the same power cords rather than having cell makers make money on their own cords). If that's true, when the iPhone gets it then the Touch will too.

I love my Touch but don't want an iPhone. It doesn't mean I'm cheap. I just bought a new phone and paid as much (or more) than I would have for an iPhone. I don't care for the iPhone as a phone. Also, I use both my phone and Touch often enough that I don't want to have the two devices compete for battery life.

The iPhone isn't an upgrade to the Touch. To me it's the other way around.... my Touch doesn't have some of the undesirable things that the iPhone does.

If Apple adds a camera, and the data capabilities people are whining for, whats the point of the iPhone? How can most justify buying it? Camera? Common across devices. Network? Well people are convinced it will come with 3G for app downloading. So toss Skype on there and you have a phone. Oh and GPS? Yeah, people think that is coming to the iTouch also. So the iPhone is useful how? How does that justify the $225 vs $700 price comparison? Think people........

I love the speculation people regurgitate here with no fact to support it. Its funny. Everyone is so convinced so many things are coming through the pipe. Front facing camera, camera on the iTouch, matte 3G S backing, 3G on the iPod Touch. I will just sit here and smile every time the new devices are released, but avoid posting links back to my previous posts that state there is no way Apple will implement these features, and saying "I told you so". Just remember, every time Apple releases a product that doesn't have a feature you wanted, think about how uberamd tried to convince you that it wasn't going to happen in the first place.

What if they do add a camera to the iPod touch? I'll remember to send you a private message and say "I told you so HAHA". It is possible to have a camera on the new iPod touch and if they don't, who cares. Just stop trying to be a smartass who thinks they know everything.

Wow, it's difficult to believe that people still think that the iPod is strictly still a music/video player.

It's pretty clear that Apple abandoned all half-baked arguments to cripple the iPod Touch (original calendar of not being able to edit, and wifi to access the iTunes store) when they launched the SDK and included the iPod.

I also take issue with the notion that it is solely driven by the under-18 crowd. I know plenty of colleagues and friends who have phones with other networks or through their work and only need the iPod Touch.

I imagine the next iPod Touch coming in 16, 32, and 64 sizes; that is faster; and has a camera. No GPS, no data plan, no compass.

Where did you hear about the gov't getting involved to standardize micro USB port on cellphones? ...I am interested to know.

...I am surprised I did not hear about it yet.

Omg

It's an iPod. Its not a camera. Its not a video camera. Its a music device that plays applications. The calling for a camera is silly, as it just makes no sense having on one on a iPod touch. Unless of course you want the device price to skyrocket like the $700 iPhone costs. The iPod Touch is .33 inches thick, iPhone is .48 inches thick. The camera is pretty tall so it would add thickness to the device as well.

Makes no sense. And yes, I own a iPod Touch and iPhone. I don't see why you don't just admit you want the iPhone, minus the phone calling ability for the same price of $200. Thats what it boils down to. Good luck.

The ipod touch of any size does not cost $1,700 that the iphone costs. The iphone then should be only a phone and nothing else

Here is a message to all u iphone people who bash ipod touch stop we don't want to spend $1,700 on an iphone for the next 2 years ok?

All this camera and microphone talk is surprising me. Really, it is. Why? Because the iPhone 3G S costs $600. The iPod Touch (16GB for comparison purposes) costs $300. The price difference between those two devices: $300. So where does that $300 price difference get made up? Camera, microphone, 3G, calling abilities. Yet for whatever reason a LOT of people are convinced the iPod Touch will see all these features rolled into it (sans the calling abilities, and possibly 3G yet some still think that is coming). Really? Think about this, you are expecting a $229 piece of hardware (since that is the low end iPod Touch model) to contain features from Apple's flagship phone? For a $0 price increase? Hm, some logic seems off there.

Where is the incentive to buy a iPhone then? The iPhone 3G (S) needs as much differentiation from the iPod Touch as possible to convince people that the iPod Touch won't 'cut it' for them, and that they need the iPhone 3G (S) to get all the features they want. The iPod Touch is like a gateway product into the iPhone world. It provides a sample of what you get while encouraging the user to spend the extra money for the camera, phone, and 3G abilities.

What do I expect the new iPod Touch to sport? Faster speeds. The internal clock speed of the 3G S. Nothing more. iPod Touch S, coming September to a Best Buy near you.

You very well may be right on just a faster iPod Touch in the autumn with higher storage. To imply that all of this other stuff is strictly limited to the iPhone is a bit fallacious.

When the original iPod Touch was released. The argument was that the iPod Touch was nothing more than a touchscreen iPod with wifi to connect to the iTunes store, etc. If you wanted an editable calendar you had to go to the iPhone. If you wanted to check email, you had to go to the iPhone. If you wanted an external speaker, you had to go the iPhone. If you wanted an external volume control, you had to go to the iPhone. If you wanted a bluetooth module, you had to go the iPhone.

The software release in early 2008 made the software related separations null and void. The release of the 2nd generation iPod touch corrected the speaker, bluetooth, and volume control.

As features were added to the iPhone (GPS, compass, and better camera), new distinctions between the two devices emerged. The iPod touch will never have a data plan. Since it will only operate where there is wifi, certain things such as GPS and a compass do not make much sense for iPod Touch. A camera, probably not with video capability, is something that would make sense for a device such as the iPod Touch. It does not require a data plan, and it would go along with a "good enough" feature for a wide segment of consumers that would be quite compelling.

I think the additional cost is marginal, and just as they maintained the iPhone 3G, it would not be impossible to believe that they keep the iPod Touch 2nd generation but cut the price, opening up a new higher level iPod Touch with said feature.

The only really compelling reason to leave out a camera would be for industrial design sakes. Would they really make a thicker iPod Touch to accommodate it? I am doubtful.

I am doubtful on that as well. It would require an entire internal redesign. The camera in the 3G is thick, so getting that to fit in the iPod Touch would be costly it seems. Maybe it will happen, but I just see speed in the future.

Camera would be really pimp.

I've always joked that the Touch needs a mic and an ear piece and bluetooth so that I can tether it to my old phone and use it as a handset.

I guess I was probably better off getting an iPhone instead of waiting for this one! :D

Feed back to Apple

I sent it to them 3 days ago.
This is my wish list.

Hello. I would love for the new iPod touch to contain the following, 3.0 Megapixel camera like the iPhone with video recording, editing, and sharing, auto focus and tap to focus. I would also love to see more RAM. The iPhone 3GS has 256 MB, upgrade the 128 MB to 256 MB in the touch. Also give the touch the faster processor that the 3GS has. It runs at 412 MHZ right now. Boost it up to 600 MHZ like the 3GS Give us better battery life Give us a built in Mic Lastly give us a better speaker. I can bearly hear it. the volume is very low compared to the iPhone 2G and 3G. Also keep the same price points and same storege models.

And you want all of this for free, right? This is one thing people need to be very, VERY aware of. Apple will want to keep the same price point on the iPod Touch. For them to do this, they will not be able to pump it full of X Y and Z.

That list reminded me of the greedy kid sitting on Santa's lap.

(X) Other: ability to be used as an external drive without the hassle of WiFi 3rd party solutions. Just plug it into the USB port or Firewire port and it mounts on the desktop. This way it can be a backup of my home folder, other files, etc. We used to have this functionality in previous iPods.

Well the current 8GB touch costs around $70.00 to make I think. It won't be too hard.
