Wireless is future proof...but I still am too used to the cable...I have a cable at my office, in car, two in house. I don't want to by pads for everywhere I go. Also I like to use the phone while it is connected charging.

I mean you could just take something like a toothpick and get rid of it. My cable kept falling out of my phone and I thought the port was screwed, but I checked and noticed a ton of lint. So I just used a toothpick, cleaned it out and now it's perfect again.
That's what I've done in the past, but it's annoying that it was even an issue in the first place. I had never had it happen in almost twenty years of using mobile phones (almost ten using smartphones) until this past summer. Also, in sticking something into the port to clean it out, someone is running the risk of causing actual damage.

It’s why I make sure to use a tooth pick since the wood will break before any of the contacts. I’m also relatively careful, but yeah it’s an inherent problem if you have the female port on the phone. That said, I feel like the lightning port is pretty damn reliable, I’ve never had one fail on me, even my now 5 year old iPhone 5.

With cable you could still use the phone whilst charging, but with the mat you pause the charging process each time you pick it up, will this affect the batteries somehow? I think this technology is really pointless, unless you use it solely for charging over night with your Watch and AirPods like the demo.

I believe eventually we will see like a localized wireless charging where you don't have to be on a mat but if you are within 6-12 inches of the pad, it will charge.

Can someone please explain to me exactly what is all the fuss about wireless charging?

I'd rather have a small wire going into my phone instead of a large stupid lump of crap on my table which also has a wire going into.

What is it the point?????

Depends how you look at it. For the record I'm not getting an 8 or X. I wanted wireless charging for the past few years though.

Few pros:
  • Less broken wires. Series 0 apple watch cable still flawless
  • I always wanted a phone stand for desk like the apple dock but couldn't justify the price. You can purchase 3-4 wireless charging stands for the price of 1 apple lightning dock
  • If you don't have a apple dock or similar and use your phone to play an instrument through something like iRig, you can now charge your phone and use it since the iRig would connect through the lightning port

Right now it's pretty useless. In a few years though now that Apple has adopted the feature we might start seeing cars support it and such. It typically takes Apple adopting a feature for it to gain mainstream popularity in the market.

Agreed.

I think it’s more of a convenience than a necessity especially since you need to spend more money to actually make use of this technology.

My issue with it was speed when I had my one and only Samsung it was a fair amount slower then the quick charger

Basically you can't use your phone and charge it at the same time, at least not if you ONLY have qi pads to charge your phone.
[doublepost=1505526773][/doublepost]Contemplating getting this case and trying out the wireless charging experience although I wish it protected the top of the shoe. I've even seen some cases with a built in lightning port.

How much electricity is going to be wasted by unused charging pads left plugged into the outlet? And I thought Apple tried to be a green company. ;)

As soon as I get my 8+, I'll plug my Anker wireless charger into my kill-a-watt and find out. I too am very interested in this.

Am I the only one who would have a problem setting my phone down on a public wireless charging pad? Germs? People are disgusting and do disgusting things with their hands. Most people's phones have ecoli and other bacteria on it anyway.

That said, I pre-ordered the 8+ this morning and bought a $21 Anker wireless charger on Amazon. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.

I hear ya to an extent but if your car has a QI charger then it’s fantastic provided you don’t want CarPlay at the same time as I think it would need to be plugged in via USB (most cars anyway). Still not worth an upgrade IMHO but I’m biased and holding out for next year.

I think its great. Just set it on your night stand when you go to bed and its charging. Less chance for mechanical failure from plugging/unplugging all the time.

I've never had an issue of "Mechanical failure" from plugging/unplugging a phone nor do I know a single person that has. That is reason 999 for getting a wireless device.

I agree with the OP. Unless wireless charging eventually has the capability to "fast charge" I'll save my money.

I agree. However, Anker's wireless charger is $21. If Apple had had their own wireless charger for anything north of $50, that would have been a no go. :p

Also: To everyone stating that you'll be able to charge your phones at hotels, coffee shops etc. Guess what? That's free! I'll be able to do that w/o having to purchase the $50-ish unit myself!

I can't wait to have a pad at my desk at work and have my phone charge while it's just sitting on it next to me.

What's the difference when the phone is sitting right next to you with a small cord plugged into it charging? Note: There's zero difference.

Confused. I was under the impression the iPhone 8 Plus HAD Fast Charging. Seems some are stating here that it doesn't...

Now you need fast charger designed for a apple phone or will the fast charger for a samsung phone charge fast too?

I thought it was overrated before I ACTUALLY USED IT. I can tell you there is no way I'm going back to plugging in a damn cable every time I want to pick up my phone.

So do you think after ditching the headphone jack, apple will ditch the charging hole?
Eventually, won't happen until you can wirelessly charge the phone without putting it onto a pad. Right now, you still need the cord and there's not been a bug rush of locations that offer wireless charging. No matter how much Samsung wanted it first. Apple is big enough to get the ball rolling. Just like with Apple Pay. Not the first, but got it implemented much quicker then Google did.

What's the difference between a cordless and corded phone? Same concept. Note: there is a difference.

I recently got a BMW X5 and it has both Qi charging and wireless CarPlay. Awesome combo for these next gen iPhones. Waiting on the X myself.

The difference can be major for some. Place your phone down on the pad on your nightstand and easily pick it up to use it. No fiddling with (usually 3 foot) cables or docks in the dark (sure lightning cables fit either way, but still). Same with a car. “Just set it and forget it” lol.

I think it's been mentioned before, but one of the biggest benefits is having a universal charger for all your devices. In the future they should sell larger Qi chargers, like the Apple air thing they mentioned, and charge all your iPhones and Android devices. No more fumbling for that micro-USB, USB-C or Lightning cable.
