I have to say, I am not in the least impressed with Dyson. My friend, who's cats I am watching has one and it couldn't pick the cat litter out of the rug...

...but my $40 Dirt Devil did just fine!

replaced all the carpet with scraped hard-wood so we gave the big bulky Dyson to my step-son and we just have the little Dyson Slim and a Hoover Flooremate to help scrub and clean the tile.

I'm not flaming them, but my $40 vacuums usually last at least a few years. Most of the time we accidentally break a cord or a hose that costs almost as much as another $40 vacuum, before the vacuum itself breaks.

The exception is a Eureka upright I bought 2 years ago. Not only could it wake the dead, but the hose clogged up every time I used it!

Right now I'm sticking to the $40 bissels. They work really well for $40. For the price of a dyson I should be good for the next 30 years or so ;)

We have a Dyson. It is a few years old, but still going strong.

I got a Dyson a few years ago after getting tired of having to make special trips to get replacement bags just to vacuum. I can't imagine going back to a bag.

Dragging up this old thread to see if Dyson owners are still as in love with their product as before. I found a good deal on one and I'm intrigued.

Or are there any other new products worth looking at?

We've had our Dyson Ball vacuum for over a year now and it's been great. No problems with it and it works very well.

I have a Eureka Boss stand up vacuum that is on its way out. In the next few months I'll be looking for one, but at least for now it works.

It has lasted about 8 years, I'm not sure if that is good/bad for a vacuum. I seem to remember my mother's vacuum lasting forever as a kid, so I'm inclined to think my current vacuum should have lasted longer.

Thanks for the follow up folks. After researching the Dyson DC-28, I found its been discontinued, hence the deal, and it lacked the ball feature. Still, not a bad option, but I'm gonna keep searching.

My wife is laughing at me bc I'm not the primary cleaner of our house yet I'm being a spec/feature hound. Of course, she's right, but I can't help it. It's tech + research! I was hooked at "Air Flow per minute."

I've had Dyson(s) for years and years now. Just bought a new one and still think they're great.

A word of warning - they've recently changed their hoses to something shorter and less flexible. I suspect that the previous hose design was expensive in terms of manufacture and they could split.

So, you might want to rethink which model you're going to go for. Check the hose out in a shop as if it's got one of the new hoses you might want to re-think which model. I've always had upright hoovers but I changed to the tow around jobbie DC32 and I'm* pretty pleased with it. (People seem to be struggling with the new hose in the uprights due to the shorter length and they seem more inclined to fall over.)

I don't know if Dyson have an online shop in the States - but here they're still offloading the DC32's online at a decent price as they didn't have a ball. At this price they're a good deal and I've been really happy with ours. (Bought before Christmas). It also comes with lots of attachments which is good as they've also changed the fit of the attachments so old attachments don't work anymore.

* Well, as you say above - really, we're just the technical consultants here...

What an amazing thread; five pages of detailed replies and thoughtful responses. Wow. I'm impressed and awed.

(And what am I doing on an overcast Wednesday afternoon, reading a thread about vacuum cleaners, instead of addressing the detailed stuff I am supposed to attend to? Sigh. It is the endless temptation of reading about technical stuff, and the sheer joy - unrelated to any external necessity - of adding yet further layers of information and knowledge to already disturbingly well stocked memory banks. You know, it is a real pleasure to meet, and converse with, so many nerds, and I mean that in the sincerest way possible). ;)

Anyway, back on topic, when I was a kid, we had the old classic 'Hoovers'. Now, a small, nifty, powerful little Miele (S2110) does the job; we've had it a good few years, and it has never given us any problems.

+1. It's a refreshing break from some of the other ultra serious threads. Not that there's anything wrong with them.

Currently using a Dyson Animal we recently purchased. I like it, but in all honesty, I dont think it cleans as good as the LG Kompressor I replaced. The problem with the LG is that the accessories and build quality went to crap after a couple years. I do think it it cleaned better than the new Dyson, but the floor heigh adjustment on the LG broke a while back.

The Dyson is nice- seems to clean decent- picked up for a good price (On sale for $280 regularly like $599). Even adjusting the heigh settings, its hard to push on the rug in our family room though, but other than it works well.

Kind of miss my LG, wish it would have held together better.

Sorry to continue necroposting, but I just picked up an older Dyson vacuum off of craigslist for $50. I took the "root cyclone" chamber apart, cleaned out years of dust, and the thing is good as new. It may not be the best vacuum, but it is by far the most intuitive, and with a washable filter and no bags there is no recurring cost. I wouldn't have paid $500 for the thing, but it strikes me as a good design that may lack durability.

To any other Dyson owners, I highly suggest you open up the "cyclone" and clean it out. This made a huge difference in my machine.
