Wanted to post an update. We ended up getting a Dyson, the DC 40. Love it. Made a rug we had look new. The amount of fine particle dust in the container after the first 2 runs was mind blowing. It's great for so many other reasons, too. I'll never buy another cheap vacuum again.

The old faithful DC-17 is still kicking on after 7 or 8 years now. Just open her up every now and then and clean the upper filters, she refuses to die regardless of how many biros and toothbrushes the kids vacuum up!

I love our Dyson DC24. Ive found Dyson customer service to be outstanding too.

Miele and Sebo also make fantastic vacuum cleaners.

3 Kirby's And 1 dyson

Kirby 1: was in my grand fathers store in the early 60s, I had it rebuilt 4 years ago after he gave it to me, by Kirby for 200 dollars. That even puts apple customer service to shame! I use this to do all my carpet in my downstairs man cave

Kirby 2: found in a dumpster at work, made in 1995. Works like new, great for my second floor, bought an attachment bag for it. Works like new,

Kirby 3: bought brand new for 1700 with two attachment bags and carpet shampooing kit, do all carpets once every 2 months with that and do my main floor with it, totally worth it.

Dyson ball: really disappointed for 500 dollars, I mean it's not a bad vacuum, by any means. I just don't think it's worth the 500. I find it amusing that my Kirby from 1965 is in better condition and out performs a couple year old dyson, I use the dyson out in my shop and garage, it's really good for cleaning my cars out.

Bissell.. something or other bag-less model, bought on sale for $35 at Walmart. :p It's nothing to write home about, but for a tiny 1 bedroom apartment, it does what the box said it does, and I have can't complain. :)

Now if only I would ever actually clean this dump, maybe I could really put it to the test once in a while.

I've been using an Oreck XL for the past 14 years for my carpets and hard floors, and an inexpensive Kenmore canister vac for the stairs. What I like about the Oreck is it's simplicity and decent construction. All the parts are easily replaced and can be purchased cheaply. Other than replacing a belt now and then, I've had no problems with mine
