Phantasm (1979)- Solid B horror movie (or is it a C?) featuring a Hemi Cuda which is cool. :D

Terrifying finger-fly scene. ;)
Update: Car name corrected.

I liked Source Code even more than Moon; both were excellent.

Spent way too much time in heroic bloodshed-land this weekend, so I decompressed with Brave Archer 3. After I receive A Better Tomorrow and it's sequel (I somehow bought the remake instead of the original last year), I'm going to politely put aside any additional triad films. Just not my genre really. I'd rather see folks flying around sword fighting or a period film than that stuff.

Hope to catch Monkey King 2 in the theatre this weekend, am already feeling like I'll get into it because the characters and the worlds look terrific.

One of the greats and one of my favorites :) JJ Abrams has been working on a UHD/4K restoration with Don Coscarelli.

Bonus trivia: the Phasma character and her chrome armor were an homage to Phantasm.

Super bonus: that's a Barracuda (in fact, a glorious Hemi Cuda)

RIP Angus Scrimm

Kung Fu Panda 3 - Big fan of the first two, but this one left me feeling underwhelming to be honest. The plot is a bit weak in my opinion with no big plot twists and the movie felt too short overall. Not DreamWorks's best movie but still a solid, enjoyable animated film.

Turns out you are right. I'll fix my post. :p I'll admit, that I struggled to identify the car, a car I was familiar with, and came up with Challenger name , forgetting about the Barracuda. If you look at these cars, they are both Chrysler E-body muscle cars and look very similiar. The hood and grille are the giveaways. :) Check out Cuda-Challenger.com a thread about Phantasm.

The Martian (2015)- Good movie. Surprised to find this on Amazon for rent. However, not surprising the book is better!

I don't blame them, the movie wins for visuals, but it stays mum on much of knowledge and the mental calculations this astronaut had to work out survival, which I found to be very interesting, like figuring out how to cover a very large distance, and while admitting this kind of stuff fits better in a book. But then it also omitted several significant events, that leaves the reader wondering, how will he overcome the next challenge?

I also forgive the movie with taking liberties with the climax, having to make up for the stuff it glossed over. :p The book did a better job overall of creating tension and telling the story. If you liked the movie and the technicalities of staying alive to give the story realism/gravity, IMO you must read the book. :)

Where was it filmed? Wadi Rum, Jordan same location as Prometheus.

I stumbled across this The Martian photo and was compelled to post, as a consumer you can no longer tell what's real and what's fantasy on the silver screen. :D

I went and saw Kung Fu Panda 3 with my son yesterday. It was ok, but the weakest one in the series.

FWIW, it's at 80% on RT (vs. #2 @ 81%, #1 @87%) and it has the highest audience rating of all three.
I agree 100% with ucfgrad93 - - it is easily the weakest of the three. Still, not a bad movie, but it comes nowhere near the best entry in the series: Kung Fu Panda 2, which is one of my favorite animated movies of the past 20 years.

I kinda figured there was a lot of green screen though...

That was a Popular Science article. During an interview with the movie Director, the author, and a Director at NASA, the author admitted the most inaccurate event in the movie was a damaging sandstorm, but it made for an exciting story. :)

While I liked Kung Fu Panda 2, the original is the best one.

Over Trek II? IV?? Even III ... ???

Well, especially over III. That film isn't anywhere near the top of my ranking!

IV is a fantastic film that is an absolute joy to watch. If we're speaking about original cast films, Khan and Voyage Home would be my second and third favorites.

But VI hit the right nails squarely on their heads: the story is excellent and is a turning-point in Trek history (ending hostility with the Klingons), I think Nimoy was a fabulously talented writer with a keen eye for political history--so the Cold War themes of the movie give a little extra depth, the actors had really mastered their characters demeanor by that point, and the FX are quite good for a 1991 film. It still looks sleek and modern today, where even II has a bit of an analog feel.

Excellent analysis.

I agree about III, it's a bit clunky, and just like an epilog for II. I'll have to re-watch VI, it's also interesting since it's the "changing of the guard".

A Better Tomorrow (1986) - Confession I accidentally bought the remake last year and finally got a hold of John Woo's original. I can see why Ti Lung won the award(s) he did for play Brother Ho. It's definitely his movie. I liked it, but now that I've seen this and the inferior sequel, I wish Ti was a part of the Hard Boiled cast too.

A Better Tomorrow II (1987) Fun to see Ti wield a sword in a modern setting, but otherwise, not my cup.

City War (1987) again. Liked it much better this time. Nice to see Sun Chung and Ti Lung team up one more time. It's a shame Sun Chung stopped making films in the early 90s because he had a wonderful style and his favorite theme of laws and lawlessness carried over into every genre he worked in. He got another terrific performance from Ti Lung here which makes the film for me.

I'm officially burnt on modern gang/triad etc. much prefer wuxias and period films to gang/crime dramas.
