Straight Outta Compton (2015) - 7.5/10

I felt it was too long and can be done as a TV movie. I could've watched a VH1 documentary of NWA for 40 minutes and not for 2 hrs and 45 minutes. The 21st films that try to capture late-80's through early-90's urban street gangs doesn't feel right to me because it isn't made in the era the way Boyz N The Hood and Juice were. Too polished. The essence wasn't there. I grew up in that era and know NWA story already. SOC was no better than Notorious (2009). Good performances especially Giamatti as Jerry Heller but it isn't really entertaining after the first 30 minutes. I kept waiting for it to be over.

The Revenant (2015) - 7/10

Another overrated film hyped from the critics. Nothing happens for like the first hour except Leo getting mauled by a bear. Leo gets nominated for Best Actor when all he did was grunt and groan for generally most of the film. Roles in multiple Scorsese films he has done much better. Dances of Wolves from 2015. Nice cinematography is the only thing going for it. Forgettable story, music, and everything else.

I thought Dicaprio was excellent in Titanic, Departed, Django Unchained, and Inception, but my feelings won't be hurt if you disagree. :) I was really turned off by him in The Man in the Iron Mask. I hate it when some Movie Makers and American actors think it's fine and dandy to use their Yank accent in a European Period Piece as I'm also thinking of Robin Hood with Kevin Costner... At least the Brits are taking the time to pick up U.S. accents. ;)

The interesting think about a U.S. period pieces is that any accent works as I think of Al Swearengen (Deadwood) and Dr. King Schultz (Django). :)

I agree 100% with ucfgrad93 - - it is easily the weakest of the three. Still, not a bad movie, but it comes nowhere near the best entry in the series: Kung Fu Panda 2, which is one of my favorite animated movies of the past 20 years.

Tbh I did think it was going to be a challenge to follow on from this .

Just saw The Revenant...it was very good but not awesome. it was kind of like Gladiator with a Western snowy theme.

His character arc was how he let "nature" take revenge for his son's murder even though he covered all that ground and survived various tests and trials.

Breathing was a theme that runs all through the film. I was a little puzzled why they let his breath fog up the lens and why he looked directly into camera at the end.

thats another thing that was lame about the movie, they didnt actually show how he was killed? we know the indian killed him but they didnt show it. i didnt like the ending, in the whole movie they build you up then at the end it falls flat

The looking at the camera thing may have something to do with another Iñarritu movie (excellent by the way) Amores Perros where Gael Garcia Bernal's character in one part looks straight at the camera. I thought it was pretty cool.

One the other hand, the cinematography was excellent. And the ability that Iñarritu and Alfonso Cuarón have to make those amazing long uninterrupted scenes it's quite remarkable. These 2 guys are passing by Del Toro and saying "hello and goodbye".

The Matrix (1999)- Scifi action with a purpose: to thrill you and an original story I think. If you've not seen it, hang in there until they make the premise clear, 45 min in. :)

Just stop at the first film. Don't watch the sequels, they're laudable and destroy the magic of the first film ...

Though surely anything would make a better battery than a human being ... Given the energy / resources it would take to harvest and keep them alive vs their energy output ...

Totally agree. The sequels are dead to me.

I enjoyed all three of them, though, you're right about the magic of the first one. I saw the first one at the base theater probably half a dozen times because it is that good.

I thought the action sequences in the second film Reloaded held up nicely and it was visually stunning, but still second to the first film. The third film Revolutions was visually impressive too but the story was not as good as what came before it. I'll probably watch number 2 tomorrow. :)

To top it all off it was essentially the move that took us into a new era of visual effects and action sequences in films.

I'm an anomaly - - I prefer the third film.

The first one is a classic in it's way, but incredibly drawn out on rewatches.
The second, I have no time for - it's a mess.
The third fulfilled the promise of the first, the true vision realized.

For Reloaded, I thought the idea of A.I. taking on personalities and Avatars to control and enjoy The Matrix first hand was creative and brilliant, entities like The Oracle (a moral rebel) who lives humbly, The Arcitect (builder of the Matrix), The Keymaker (who opens doors), Merovingian (he who enjoys power and carnal pleasure) and his partner, Persephone who is not thrilled with his infadelities. The action sequence from the Merovingian to the Highway chase seen, along with Neo fighting 100s of Smiths makes the film worth watching in themselves. :)

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)- This viewing revelation: Shots of Neo in the real world looks like he is missing his head Jack, but he has one and uses it on close ups. :) If you understand The Architect's speech, you are ahead of me. :p

A fight scene in 'The Matrix Reloaded' is the most expensive scene ever filmed!

That one scene (in the park) alone is seventeen minutes long, and cost over $40 million to produce!

There's Something About Mary (1998)- Laugh out loud funny if you enjoy gutterish slapstick. Just squint real hard to imagine Ben Stiller as a 16 year old. "Omg, he does'nt flog the dolphin before every big date"! :D

I'd never guess this is Warren, Mary's brother:

I saw "Once Upon a Time In the West" for the third (or was it fifth?) time. The musuc is getting better and better <3

It was actually an accident, my net stopped working for, like, 3 hours @3 AM, and I couldn't sleep...so I remembered couple old , classic movies a friend gave me in 2010 (!) to "educate myself"

The first one is still a seminal moment in film, FX, I watch it monthly :D

On occasion I'll toss the 2nd or 3rd movie on in the background, but I do enjoy the defense scene (with the mech suits) and philosophical rambling in the 3rd :D

It's Dan Dority! He's excellent in Deadwood (very, VERY highly recommended ...)

I'm working up the motivation to watch the third one. :)

I might have to rewatched Deadwood. Does any of HBO's stuff eventually find it's way to Netflix, I wonder? An excellent job creating an old West frontier vibe. Great ensemble cast. Too bad HBO nixed it after two seasons. :( Actor's name: W.Earl Brown. Btw, I never made that connection until you pointed it out. :)

The actress Lyn Shaye who played Magda (TSAM) besides the fake boobs I never realized how much prosthetics she wore until I watched: Behind the scenes.

It definitely makes it to Amazon, and in fact, all three seasons Deadwood are available (free if you're a Prime member).

The murmurings of a Deadwood movie have started again, it would be great to see the characters again, and maybe just tidy up a few of the plot lines. Honestly, it's very watchable even with the series ending premature, it kind of has a life-goes-on feel at the end, not some kind of crazy cliffhanger.
