My family and I watched Specter last night. We liked it but thought that it wasn't as good as other Bond movies starring Daniel Craig.

Given he has/will made/make millions of dollars personally from Batman even if it's panned by critics, he certainly should not be pitied as a 'poor guy' ...

From all the reviews it's problems are obvious. It spends too much time trying to setup the cinematic universe to follow at the expense of its own identity and focus.

True. I'm pitying a guy who is sleeping on a pile of money made soft only by yet another much bigger pile of money that lays underneath it...

47 Ronin... Keanu Reeves version... I liked. Are you proud of me? :p
LOL. Yes. Yes, I am. You get the gold star pachyderm :p Now my being proud of you doesn't mean squat, nor does it properly segue into my next response to this thread. Now go forth and continue to love schlocky movies.

Judgement of An Assassin (1977) When I first watched this movie I had no idea it would become not only one of my most favorite Shaw Brothers / HK movies, but one of my most favorite movies period. It tweaks the one clan to rule the martial world oh so cleverly by using an elaborate murder plot and subsequent trial of the murderer to undo the good martial clans. David Chiang and Chan Wai Man would face off a couple more times (after Judgement their most notable stand off would be in the gruesome Bloodied Treasure Fight), but both of them bring their A game here in their acting and martial abilities.

I could probably write a thesis on Bloody Devil's unscathed skills (namely tombstone crushing kick), but with this film, I utterly lost my mind over CWM for his martial abilities and his acting chops too. As subtle and vulnerable as he was in The Deadly Breaking Sword, he's a delightfully over the top baddie here, and you can tell he's having a lot of fun playing such an e-v-i-l man. Great make up design too. And coolest lair ever for a bad guy. David Chiang was pretty much the master of sly charm and is simply adorable as the hippie-like Swift Sword. He gets some interesting fighting moves too, but it's his delightful flip of the bird to the films' older characters (except for his sifu) that makes Swift Sword so much fun. Lots of terrific minor characters too including the old couple Fa Si Gu and Old Hedgehog. And the fights are a delightful mix of grounded viciousness and crazy invented styles. This is one of my favorite Tong Gai choreographed movies. I just love this film. It cemented my admiration and respect for director Sun Chung and confirmed why I enjoy Chiang and Chan so darn much.

Every time I see someone mention this film I hope it is about:

Samurai films are a good gateway. That's how I slowly got back into Asian films before going whole hog almost a year ago.

Latest:

Captain America The Winter Soldier. Nice to see this again after a couple of months away. I still love the scenes with the WS and the highway fight scene remains the most exciting American fight I've seen for some time. Here's to Sebastian Stan getting a LOT more screen time going forward.

An amazing chariot race (before the time of face pasting) that Charlton Heston actually drove in.

Leave the crew for an hour, and they go and put up a golden calf. Where were they hiding that thing? ;)
How many horses died during the making of Ben-Hur though? 5 in the original 1925 film and one stuntman. Aparantly 263 ft of film was shot for every one they kept for the chariot race. If they made it today it would all be CGI and be rubbish.

Watched Crystal Skull again last night. You notice how old Ford looks. Doesn't bode well for Indy 5.

I did not know, according to this article nearly 100 horses died during the making of 1958's Beh-Hur. :(

Tombs of the Blind Dead (1971) Are they skeletal mummies? Vampires? Black magic wielding Templars? All of the above. Well, not mummies, but Armando De Ossorio's Spanish horror film puts a unique twist on the vengeful dead. Their thirst for blood and the whole skeletal look repleat with Templar beards is still quite unique 45 years later.

So how are the Blind Dead woken up from their slumber? By the unfortunate visitation of the rudely dumped Virginia who tries to make the best of failed romance by camping out in the ruins of the Templar's castle. Oops.

What follows are some truly great moments of Virginia and the blood thirsty Templar ghouls and an even more brilliant piece in a mannequin factory. Virginia is the only character who is remotely likable and her fate is both thrilling and sad as I still really like her character after countless viewings over the past two decades. Everyone else pretty much deserves what's coming to them. I was surprised to discover how little screentime the Blind Dead have (it's been about 6 years since I've watched this), they truly are one of the most unique and cool monsters ever dreamed up. Awesome soundtrack too, very evil chanting and such. I love their slow motion horses, that the BD sense their victims by sound and they're just so creepy looking. The film as a whole sadly doesn't hold up now, but I'll be glad to revisit the select scenes. Another bummer, I'd forgotten Blue Underground only release their foreign films with the (usually awful) English dub, so I won't be buying too many foreign films from them digitally going forward (My dvds of this series walked some years ago.) It's too bad as this film is a lot more entertaining in Spanish.

---

Yes, Madam! (1985) Another film I haven't seen in a long while, Yes, Madam! is known for being Michelle Yeoh's debut film and what an opening act. She's terrific as a plucky Inspector who along with the unconvincing Cynthia Rothrock (an amazing martial artist, but not an actress) protect two bumbling thieves who come into a triad boss' microfilm that naturally spills the beans on the boss' bad doings. Of course the big bad wants the incriminating microfilm back. The painful English dub I sat through reminds me why I much prefer Hong Kong films in their native language, but that's kind of a moot point when Yeoh is so charming and effective. Not to mention fearless. I would have broken down and cried if I was told I had fling myself through several plate glass railing guards, tables etc. Now my real reason for revisiting this falls on Dick Wei's broad, brutal shoulders and he's just awesome. To wit, a funny moment in his showdown with Rothrock (note: she curses.) I'm sure the Cantonese version will be a lot more fun and I'll definitely revisit because of Wei and Yeoh.

Wouldn't that be the title of 75% of all movies?
Could be but I believe the percentage would be more like 25%

That previous movie poster though..

It looks like he has a beautiful girl on his arm, yet he's in love with his buddy's girl.

What terrible problems to have!
