The Book of Eli (2010)- ...again. I can watch this movie repeatedly and have a hard time understanding why it was received poorly by critics and audiences. What’s not to like? :)

Aka Arnie the Bullet Dodger. Decent 80s action movie, but more like a "tier 2" Arnie flick.

Eighth Grade. What a wonderful movie, and what an important subject! I think that every parent of school aged kids (or younger) should watch it.

This movie made me wonder if we, technological nerds of the 80’s and 90’s, have somehow doomed our youth.

Watched using AMC A-List.
It was definitely a good movie.

The young lady in the movie's plot is hoping to make friends, fit in, and build her confidence, starting from having almost none of those things. Meanwhile, she's embarrassed by almost everything her father says, seemingly embarrassed just to have a parent at all, while depending on him more than she realizes. Early teens have always had challenges like these, so I think it would be mostly the same with or without smart phones and Instagram.

In the future, technology will morph again, but kids at that age will still have the challenges of growing up.

I've seen it the once. It was okay, but I don't think I'd rush to see it again.

A film that reminds me of being at school! Not watched it in a while, and tbh I merge a lot of the early AS films together as I've not seen them in a decade or more.

Watched "Super Troopers 2" over the weekend. It was farcical and pretty funny, in a dumb humour way. The movie isn't going to go down in history as prime cinema, but it was an amusing way to spend some time.

There was a book called "Hackers" By Steven Levy, but it was about the technical advancements made at MIT from the '50's through the 80s. As for the movie, well "Hack the planet".

Yeah this bunch of "Hackers" are not Stephen's crowd but surely a hint of the co-opting of the idea of hacking that was to come from Hollywood in the then future. Anyway finishing a watch of "Hackers" right now so I don't lose my 99c LOL... my almost-dollar bargain would expire in another five hours.

The film would seem to appeal for cult status just from the self-adulation of the characters from within its own plot lines. They all never saw one of themselves they didn't figure couldn't come in handy at some point for prying something loose off something else to get from one scene to the next. I've noticed a lot cult flicks end up relying on flight of ideas to get from start to finish. Must be something about the intended audiences. :p

Speaking of hackers I just got another of those fun overlays on my screen for a few seconds as I was typing that line... Error 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable. :D Touchy little dudes.

Mention that you received the "Error 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" in the SFF section; I always do that when I receive these messages so that the mods - who do monitor that section - will be able to see it, and perhaps address the issue.

Absolutely. I think that one of the problems - which is clearly an element of this story - is that social media and smartphones in general (and especially the time spent on them) allow kids to create and live for fake lives. The very first scene is about that. Only when she separates a bit from her smartphone she begins to change. Obviously this movie is Very smart, so it’s not monothematic.

It surprised me to learn that Eighth Grade was written and directed by a stand-up comedian, Bo Burnham.

Fun article about some real eighth graders going to see the movie with a reporter.

What I liked most about this movie was that it didn't take itself too seriously. It had several very entertaining set pieces — Arnold's escape from the jet as it's leaving LAX, the fight at the mall, and Arnold's decimation of the soldiers in Val Verde, to name just three — as well as some very funny lines ("I let him go" after Arnold drops Sully off a cliff).

The ridiculous twist that he was blind the whole time.

That’s not ridiculous at all based on the fantasy premise, and everything he does during the movie, especially because of his condition. :)

Exactly this. To add to everyting already mentioned, the motel room brawl with Bill Duke is also a classic, if for nothing else then at the very least for the almost identical lines by Schwarzenegger and Duke at the end of the fight when Cooke has Matrix at gunpoint. As they are perhaps a bit crass to write here, I'm going to leave it at that.

Also, during the climax at the compound in Val Verde, it does seem like Matrix has munition belts on his machine guns that seem to get longer the more he shoots. Marvelous stuff!

That’s exactly why I love and what makes True Lies (1994) the pinnacle of Arnold’s career arguably his most polished performance and a brilliant example of James Cameron’s talent as director making some over the top sequences look plausible. :)

Agreed, so many cool one liners.
I chuckled when I heard "you guys eat too much red meat" and "too much macho bs". :D

Agree to disagree I guess.
[doublepost=1533672532][/doublepost]Finally saw Mission Imp: Fallout. No spoilers here. I refused to watch any commercials or previews since they give away so much. Wasn't disappointed at all. Tom Cruise is a nut and the action sequences were almost as crazy as he was. hail Xenu!

Bottom line, it's a story of a man given a mission and direct assistance by his deity. :)
