Overlord
Nazi-zombies. Was expecting a pretty mindless horror/action flick, but it exceeded my expectations. The opening sequence was fantastic. There are some pacing issues, but that's forgivable. Jovan Adepo's acting was top notch.

I suppose we have The Walking Dead to thank for this. ;) I will definitely stream it.

Overlord is a gloriously entertaining piece of B-movie schlock

The Blob (1958)- It was good in its day, but the 1988 remake was superior in every way.

The Dirty Dozen (1967)- Enjoyable WWII flick, one of Lee Marvin’s best roles, about a mission behind enemy lines using Army felons, to assassinate members of the German high command in a French chateau.

Went with the family to see the new "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald". Excellent addition to the Potterverse and a good movie. It as a good sequel to the first and set things up quite well for the next movie in the series. If you're a Potterverse fan or liked the first movie in the series, then you'll like this one! Definitely worth seeing on the big screen!

Solo: A Star Wars Story
Just.... meh..... all around. Not enough dogfights, and the actors were..... disappointing (granted they had a lot to live up to). But I can't shake the feeling that this movie was "unnecessary".

I just watched it again, and I don’t really like the guy who plays Solo. Granted he had big shoes to fill. It seemed to have the elements I would expect in Star Wars, but it just did not click for me. It was like going through the motions.

Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
John Rambo is released from prison by the government for a top-secret covert mission to the last place on Earth he'd want to return - the jungles of Vietnam.

Can someone suggest a solid action movie for the evening?

I’m into
- sci-fi
- medieval drama
- mission based movies
- superhero stuff works as well.

I haven't seen the earlier movie (Fantastic Beasts); do you recommend watching it?

I suspect that this will be better appreciated having seen the earlier movie.

If you like the HP movies it’s okay. But yes I’d recommend seeing them in order for best viewing.

I preferred the books to the movies of the original HP stories.

However, this movie (and its immediate predecessor) is - are - something that had never appeared in book form, so that one can come to it with a fresh mind (and eye).

I definitely recommend seeing the first before the second. It introduces the main characters and sets everything up for the second. This is a serial, not standalone movies. I really enjoyed the first and regret not seeing it in the theatre when it came out. They did a good job of writing and the acting was spot on. Redmayne isn't one of my favourite actors but this part was tailor made for him and he really owned it.

One of the all time greats, that's for sure.

I always chuckle at this famous John Malkovich -quote:

  • [on turning down the Jimmy Conway role in Goodfellas (1990)] It sort of came at a bad time in my life, when I wasn't feeling well and didn't want to think about working. It's hard to explain why you end up in Eragon (2006) and not Goodfellas (1990). But De Niro is fantastic.

Well, obviously it's not the whole quote that makes me chuckle, and certainly not the reasoning behind him turning down the role, but the Eragon-part. Saying something like that on the record takes character.

Saw Bohemian Rhapsody over the weekend, which was a lot of fun. The actor playing Freddie Mercury did an incredible job.

Just finished a Netflix Originals -double feature. First was Hold the Dark (actually not a Netflix original, but still distributed by them), directed by Jeremy Saulnier, and the second Bright, directed by David Ayer.

Hold the Dark is a hauntingly beautiful film to look at. The Alaskan wilderness looked great, but the story need a little bit of time to sink in. The actors did a fine job, but in hindsight this probably wasn't the right choice to watch with a slight fever and just general drowsiness. A rewatch is in order sometime in the near future.

Bright wasn't at all what I expected, and I found myself enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. The two hours pretty much flew by. Not much to complain about, but then again, there really wasn't anything extraordinary about it either. If there's a sequel, I'll probably watch it.

Both films were in Dolby Vision, and I have to say I'm pretty pleased with Netflix putting out the amount of DV-titles that they do. There's no way I'm investing in an Atmos setup while living in an apartment, but at least the films look great and the speakers I currently have give that little extra oomph the TV speakers aren't capable of delivering.

I think Jeremy Jahns(Youtube) pretty much summed up my opinions of the movie.
I agree with this review. The Star Wars franchise is in deep do do. The problem today is that at it’s best you have to rely on an old story like Rogue Squardon, which I liked a lot, but is still reliving the good ole past, although it actually recreates a good new chapter for an old event.

Solo is mostly forgettable and fails to deliver. It felt more like a commercialized product without a soul, made to make money on franchises fans, is if you make it, no matter how lacking it is, they will pay to see it. And the modern franchise is so dicked up, such an insult to the original trilogy, those days maybe on shakey ground. Unless the reviews are fantastic, I’ll be streaming Episode 9 (2019).

What this allows me to say about George Lucas, he may have lost it, but when he was in the grove, no one could or can tell a better Star Wars story than he could. JJ Abrams maybe able to tout his Star Wars gross figures, but I credit him for BLOWING IT. All the resources in the world can’t make up for the lack of vision and cold hearted monetization of the franchise. At least I can still enjoy, and they can’t screw up the original trilogy which is still a breath of fresh air as compared mostly to what has followed it.
