Among so many other things (racism, the Vietnam war, nuclear war, youth versus elder). Darn, I misplaced the early Cinefex magazine that features Rick Baker. His hippie PoTA style ape make up he did on himself was so much fun (and better than the work he did in Burton’s movie.)

But this is Rick in the Burton movie.

If I understand it correctly, Baker worked on the remake and Thomas Burman did the original along with a bunch of Star Treks. I’ve not been able to find a video link to the entire Documentary, Making Apes. Duh, I don't think It has has been released yet.

John Chambers did the make up for the original Apes, he won an honorary Oscar for that. Not sure who did the sequels though. Maybe Burman?

Rick created a fan Apes make up (which was what I referring to as the hippie Ape from the Cinefex issue - he wore his hair long then). Sorry for any confusion.

Ironically, Rick won the first make up Oscar for An American Werewolf in London.

Thanks for the correction!

Can you tell us more about Bird Box? I almost started it yesterday. It reminds me of The Happening (2008) where there were mass suicides.

It’s incredibly cliched.
Basically a bad mix of A Quiet Place, I am Legend (movie), The Mist (movie), The Happening, World War Z (movie), and In The Mouth of Madness.
It’s not bad entertainment, but it’s absolutely not worth the hype. Now, A Quiet Place is a GOOD movie if you want to see a post-apocalyptic movie.

I’ll put A Quiet Place on my list. My favorite post apocalyptic movie is a tie between The Book of Eli, The Matrix, and Mad Max Fury Road and the worst was The Road. Oblivion is ok to good and I found World War Z to be totally forgettable.

I disliked The Happening and think The Mist is pretty good, especially with that twist at the end of the movie, which differs from the Stephen King Novella.

The Road was particularly depressing!

Currently watching Spectre. Looking forward to the new James Bond film next year!

I loved The Mist as a very lovecraftian movie and novel. The ending of the movie is quite memorable!
The Book Eli, ah what a great movie! I think you’ll like A Quite Place.

I saw bumblebee with the kids today. Much better than the bloated, too-long Michael Bay crapfests.

Also watched the equalizer 2 on Blu-ray. Not very good at all. Neither the first one or this one were like the tv show at all.

Last night we took a shot on watching "Full Metal Alchemist" on Netflix, after hearing some good things about it. Boy, were the fans wrong. It was terrible. We switched it off after about 20 minutes. On the upside, my son and I then watched an animated Batman movie, "Batman: Bad Blood". As is usual with the DC animated movies, this one was a winner. Good animation, great story and an overall success. We enjoyed this one a lot!

Most of DC's animated things are very good. Dunno why they've had such a hard time with live-action films, though Wonder Woman and Aquaman have been great. Zack Snyder was mostly to blame for the other terrible DC movies though. Seems the best movies from DC lately are the ones he had nothing to do with.

If you're looking for a pretty good show, give "Titans" a go. It's DC's new TV series.

I have to agree that the animated movies are top notch. But I am one of the fans who has liked all of the DC live action movies. Yeah, the Snyder films could have been a lot better, but Wonder Woman and Aquaman are unbeatable!

I'm looking forward to eventually seeing "Titans" and the other DC series. Hopefully they will make their way from the streaming service, (which I am unlikely to subscribe to at the moment) to Netflix or Amazon. Until then, I'll make do with the excellent offerings from the CW's Arrowverse!

Saw Aquaman today with my boys and came away very impressed. Best DC movie yet..solid story line, fantastic CGI / cinematography and the battle scenes were awesome. Worth paying to see at the theatre and highly recommend the IMAX version.

Saw Mary Poppins Returns and it was very good and fun - the kids loved it. And there were some subtle easter eggs references to the original film. Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda put on excellent performances.

Later the same day we saw Spiderman which was excellent. The artwork and storyline were exquisite. Highly recommended.

The Illusionist (2006.)
One of my all time favorites.

This is a fantastic movie, watched it tonight (not for the first time), strong story, stylish, reinforcing orchestration, impressive setting and atmosphere, very immersive transporting the viewer back in time. I have one critique, although I can forgive the movie, is the cgi used to power at least some of the illusions, at least the orange tree.

Also watched Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)- a solid swashbuckling, humorous adventure film, decent CGI, but I think I like Geoffrey Rush more than Johnny Depp. What always bothered me about Capt Jack Sparrow was that I could never figure out how good or bad he was.
