@honestone33

I just started Moneyball a few weeks ago and forgot to finish it. I’ve heard good things. I’ve always been a Brad Pitt fan, he usually has the same acting style throughout most of his films, with the exception of ‘Fight club’ being a complete psycho in a perfectly suitable manner for his character.😁

I enjoyed Moneyball 👍 - great movie

Yeah, that is definitely accurate. I really thought he did an excellent job in Moneyball:

Besides Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill was excellent also. But I found out something today that I did not know (as the old saying goes, you learn something new everyday). Chris Pratt played Scott Hatteberg. I certainly did not catch that before, even though I have watched the movie at least 3 times.

Didn't particularly care for Moneyball.

The Lighthouse (2019) by Robert Eggers.
Talk about strange movies! Great acting by both Pattinson and Dafoe, I truly enjoyed this tale of descent into madness. I found the story and the setting very Lovecraftian.

I've been meaning to watch this for the longest time, and finally got around to it tonight. First off, although I knew about the aspect ratio, like with I'm Thinking of Ending Things, there was, again, some fiddling with the TV remote just to make sure.

Amazing movie. I can only imagine what it was like filming this, since apparently all the weather conditions were real, and no rain or wind machines were used on set. I really liked the claustrophobic atmosphere, and the two leads did an amazing job. Robert Pattinson sure has come a long way since the Twilight days. Nice symbolism to the story, and yep, the Lovecraftian twist on things was a really nice touch.

Robert Eggers so far is 2/2, since both this and The VVitch are really great movies. I especially enjoy the attention to detail when it comes to things like the dialogue, although it also makes me appreciate subtitles.

The Conjuring [2013]

Halloween theme continued:

Scary movies are hard to actually make ‘scary’ sometimes as I said before in this thread, and this movie is actually scary. If you like ‘The Exorcist’ (Can you really like the Exorcist, though?), then you certainly will like this one. I’m a fan of James Wan being a director, [He’s also behind the Insidious series.]

One actor I don’t think that ever gets mentioned enough in this industry is Patrick Wilson. He’s just very articulate and believable in his roles, (and he also stars in the Insidious movies) and I can see why James Wan drafted him through-out multiple films. Vera Farmiga is Also great actress. (See ‘The Departed’ being one of her star roles.)
Yeah, I've heard "good" things about The Conjuring. And yes, The Exorcist is one scary movie. Another excellent one is Silence of the Lambs:

As for Patrick Wilson, don't forget how good he was in Fargo Season 2:

I thoroughly enjoyed Season 2 (same with Seasons 1 &3), and Patrick Wilson certainly made it very, very good!

Shame, really. The movie has so much potential to be good and I like Dennis Quaid as an actor, but it fails with so many unrealistic scenarios that would never happen in real life with people making non-sensical decisions when they have a psycho (Quaid) stocking them.

So the premise is, Dennis Quaids character is selling his house to a couple, however his character is very obsessed with the house and makes a lot of unexpected visits after it sells with his obsession of what used to be his ownership for a long time, and of course there’s another deeper secret side in the movie that I won’t divulge here.

Lastly, (back to Dennis Quaid), he just doesn’t work for me as a ‘true psycho‘ in this movie. It’s almost like he’s not the perfect fit for somebody to play a role of a Legit whack job, but given the movie sucked anyways, I’m not sure any other actor would’ve really made this movie that much better, given it’s not realistic in any sense, and some of the other acting is mediocre.

I concur with everything you said. It seems that we've very similar tastes so I guess I'll have to watch VVitch. Robert Pattison was indeed a surprise, which also demonstrates how a great director can make actors be 10x better.

As for subtitles: yes, I had them on. I could understand only about 10% of what the heck Defoe was saying.

May 1979: I began reading science fiction at age 18. I read it voraciously for the next five years. What I read quickly convinced me that computers would eventually lead to humanity's downfall and/or enslavement.

Jan. 1985: The first computer I ever used was an Apple IIe (as part of my new college work-study job). I literally recoiled from it at first and tried, to no avail, to talk my way out of using it. Within an hour or so of using the AppleWorks database program, I was hooked. I bought my first Mac on April 1, 1988. By 1998, I was a Mac tech-support person.

I still remain convinced that computers - in the hands of government and corporations (and iDevices in our own hands) - will eventually enslave us in various ways.

My point: I just watched an excellent movie called Infinity Chamber (2016). I wasn't expecting much when I started watching it, but it keeps getting more and more riveting as it progresses. You can click that link and immediately start watching it for free. No registration is necessary. Even the song in the closing credits is so good that I listened to it to the very end.

***Halloween theme continued***

I liked it. It’s about a couple (Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale) when their vehicle breaks down, they make their way to a hotel and is terrorized from a group of psychos. [This movie has a very Alford Hitchcock type of aura.]

But truthfully, the real ‘star’ actor in this movie is Frank Whaley. He plays The role as a hotel clerk, but nailed his role as a true psycho from the way he looks and acts with his mannerisms. Seriously, if anyone is interested in this type of film, wait until you see his performance, it’s worth giving credit to.

Movie notation:

Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale characters in the movie do not get along by design, however, in real life when they were on set together, they also apparently did not get along where Luke Wilson was ‘allegedly‘ arrogant, reportedly showed up hung over, and was difficult to work with according to Kate.

Amulet (2020)

Keeping in the mood of the season, Amulet I really enjoyed the watch and subsequently watched again several times over. This is a slow burn horror that more disturbing than outright frightening, most definitely not for the jump scare crowd. Amulet is thought provoking and unnerving, those that liked Hereditary may very well enjoy the journey that Amulet presents to the audience. Very much atmosphere driven, as the tension heightens so does the gore in parts, which is well done with practical effects thankfully.

Not without flaws however for a directorial debut I found Amulet to be a compelling watch and a keeper. TBH one of the better new horror films I've watched of recent. A small cast that executes beautifully with the right amount of dialogue allowing the audience to decide for themselves, without everything being blatantly spelled out :)

Sounds interesting. The classic "hotel" thriller, of course, is Psycho:

That scene STILL scares me!

The Lie (2018)- Watch this if you want to get pissed off. A teen kills her friend and the parents cover for her. With a twist.

Pitfall (1948) by Andre De Toth.
Rule #1: Don't cheat on your wife.
Rule #2: Rule #1 is even more important if you're the main character of a classic noir movie.
Pitfall is a simple tale of forbidden love and its consequences, all in a noir setting. Very enjoyable.
I saw The Lighthouse and was thinking about it. :)

Hall-O-Ween continuation:

If you like those types Of movies where there’s some type of unidentified lifeform on a ship, and you have to find a means of escape, this movie is totally for you (Think ‘Alien’). And with such a small cast, the storyline really works, and the whole movie is literally shot in very dark sequences. I’m a huge fan of Ben Foster’s work {Hell or Highwater, Lone Survivor, 3:10 to Yuma}.

Dennis Quaid is good, And there’s an actual decent twist in the latter part of movie.

Enjoy!

The Fare (2018). Click that link or the one at the end to watch it for free. It's an excellent movie for a Saturday night, or any night (but I just posted it on Saturday night).

At one point late in the movie, the man says something to the woman that reminded me of two beautiful, short poems by author Stephen Crane (1871-1900). I found them in 1998, and they express something I had already thought myself on more than one occasion. Here they are:
X
Should the wide world roll away
Leaving black terror
Limitless night,
Nor God, nor man, nor place to stand
Would be to me essential
If thou and thy white arms were there [with me]
And the fall to doom a long way.
XXIII
Places among the stars,
Soft gardens near the sun,
Keep your distant beauty;
Shed no beams upon my weak heart.
Since she is here
In a place of blackness,
Not your golden days
Nor your silver nights
Can call me to you.
Since she is here
In a place of blackness,
Here I stay and wait.

An indie-90s-esq comedy. Lots of heart and breathtaking scenery. If you’re a fan of Northern Exposure or the far north, i reckon you’ll like this one.

Yeah it was. I’m a big fan of Gordon Pinsent; great voice. I must’ve heard about it from your earlier post. Thanks!

PS> Liane Balaban... stunning.

First off, the title for the film is perfect. The movie starts off really strong when there’s a slight backstory of Shia’s Dad being killed in the car accident, setting up Shia LeBoeufs character being on ‘house arrest’, and then obviously the creepy neighbor moves in. Where this film falls flat, is the horrible acting from the girl next-door that he falls for and the plot itself turns ridiculous. It’s Almost like you want to like this film after watching the first 45 minutes, and then you realize you just can’t because it completely tanks with the shotty acting and unrealistic scenarios.
