Ahh yes, Arrival. Definitely not talked about enough. I personally think Arrival is one of the best, [if not thee] best sci-fi movies in the last decade. It’s really brilliantly acted with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. It’s very thought-provoking and overall, really emphasized on human condition. Also, the musical score is on point, and definitely will draw the viewer closer with various cinematic events.
Unfortunately the vast majority of films are now engineered for specific audiences, yet frequently go nowhere as a direct result; 2001 A Space Odyssey, Alien, Blade Runner, Predator, Terminator etc. remain to be top of the game as they played to the story, took chances, appealed to the majority of adults not vocal minorities, Twitter Rage Mob and or all the other nonsense.

Writers need to get back to creating good content nothing else, nothing more, the rest will come. Stop trying to appease all as it's going nowhere fast. They will never make all these groups happy. Resultantly the vast majority of new films are barely worth watching, let alone worth the entry price at the cinema. Studios will either work it out, go bust of be bought out...

Yep too late, with Disney hovering up all and sundry. As ever monopolies never serve the end user. You do get the occasional spark such as 1st season Altered Carbon & West World, yet such entertainment must be stifled by the usual suspects resulting in cancelation or just another watered down wanabe going nowhere second season reboot or sequel, what a waste.

Not that it's bad, just that like so many others that's the star of the show, not the actual performance. As one see's past the CGI, leaves for a shallow experience. CGI should augment the film never dominate, Tenet is clearly well executed, yet unsatisfying & unfulfilling as a feature film.

Honestly I don’t remember much CGI. But I do plan to rewatch it when I have time.

The Dig - Great movie - really enjoyed this movie

GF is out of town, and doesn't care for these types of movies.

I enjoyed it. Interesting premise, with a decidedly B movie execution.

On the fence if I need to watch the newer ones.

I remembered those. Definitely legendary, although the 3rd was a bit less imo.
First film is without any doubts the best of the trio, with the third being the weakest. I'll need to have a dig as there's others that easily equal Infernal Affairs out of HK and mainland China. Sooner Hollywood folds the better then we might get back to good films, opposed to shallow remakes, reboots & copies, equally Disney is looming...

A film that explores time and how we perceive far better is Arrival being intelligently written, delivered with a solid cast that resonates and provokes conversation... Q-6

I agree - great movie - great production - great acting - IMHO - 👍

Another great Sci Fi story and movie that I enjoyed very much and got almost no recognition - Clara 2018 - Wikipedia

Another extremely, violent, silly, and immature movie.

It has a great heart though. In many ways it is a homage to a boy meets girl, 80s movie, with a bit more edge to it.

I haven't seen it since it was theaters, and was pretty delighted how well it holds up.

I just watched Promising Young Woman and really liked it. Carey Mulligan does an outstanding job in the film.

Last night on local commercial free television, a 2016 Korean horror/zombie film “Train to Busan”. Worth seeing if you enjoy that genre.

Absolute Power - 1997

Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, tremendous supporting cast. Severe need of getting back to making good films for the right reasons, not the trash that's all too frequently served up today. Simple things like; solid acting, engaging storylines, not treating the paying customer as a complete idiot & spoon feeding them every detail or solely relying on CGI to carry the film.

Absolute Power isn't the best of it's day, equally its a dam sight better than much of the tripe served up now, that's laughably framed as being entertainment. Bottom line is if your too afraid to turn left or right you mostly go nowhere and that encapsulates the vast majority of films today...

Just saw The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) last night. It's a movie I'd long heard about but never seen. Knowing it was a psychological thriller (one of my favorite genres) piqued my interest and I have to say I enjoyed it very much. It got dark fast and just kept getting worse, but I couldn't help wanting to see what this character would do next. Now I'm interested to read the novel upon which this movie is based.

Just a jumbled mess of action. Sure there's a story in there, however the action or more to the point CGI takes the staring role. I didn't find Tenet to be deep, complex or challenging, mostly just more of the same only scrambled up in an attempt to make the film different and edgy.

Tenet to me does not come across as being elegantly or smartly written more an exposition of "look what I can do". Cinematography & acting is solid, equally if Tenet was portrayed in a linear manner there'd be little to no discussion with film yet again being an average action flick at best. Tenet WOW's you with it's grandiose scale, CGI attempts to be clever with paradoxes beyond that very little else is on the table.

A film that explores time and how we perceive far better is Arrival being intelligently written, delivered with a solid cast that resonates and provokes conversation...

Doe they actually describe how the mechanics of time travel works in this movie (Tenet)? I’m hesitant to watch it.

Is that available in the U.S.? The only one I have been able to find is the 1990 version with Richard Gere, both on Netflix and all streamable options.
IDK as I'm not based in the US, don't see why it wouldn't be. Maybe others can expand, I have the physical disks somewhere LOL as any film I like I'll rip and playback on the HTPC.

The Richard Gere film is Internal Affairs (1990). The Departed (2006) is the Hollywood remake of Infernal Affairs (2002) directed by Martin Scorsese, however not remotely close. The Departed misses much if not all of the depth, subtleties and much of the point of Infernal Affairs and it's two subsequent sequels.

Some of the HK crime films are really gritty and can be very down to earth, with some provoking if not shocking scenes yet retain a very grounded approach. Infernal Affairs is very much about the journey two men undertake and how they are both trapped by circumstance in a Perpetual Hell.

I do recommend, don't generally do so for foreign language films as they can be a hard watch.

Looks like Infernal Affairs with English subtitles is available on Prime in the US. I liked The Departed quite a bit, so sounds like Infernal Affairs is going on the list.

Nomadland

Well, that was quite disappointing. I was really looking forward to this film. I was fully aware of the subject matter and issues but I found it was so low key that very little happened to make me feel any attachment to the characters. This has cemented my view that the Academy and its members have lost the plot (no pun intended).
