I don't think anyone is a really a fan of the guy
I am. More specifically to his craft as an actor, especially in the sci-fi genre.

That said, he’s the top paid actor in the film industry averaging about~ 22 million a film. I’d say there’s a reason that Cruise is ‘liked’ by millions, aside from a few people on a tech site.:D

Apocalypse Now

It's all been said before, if you haven't, you must. This film encapsulates art, war, horror, personal angst and far much more than I can express here..."I love the smell of Napalm in the morning"

n.b. Multiple versions take your pick, as none are bad, just different, only Full Metal Jacket comes close...

Great movie!

Fair enough... I don't like him, but I like his movies. Hope that makes sense.

Some of his movies are excellent and others blah.
Good:
  • Risky Business
  • Top Gun
  • Mission Impossible (original)
  • A Few Good Men
  • Rain Man
  • Oblivion
  • Top Gun: Maverick- to be determined.
The first Mission Impossible was pure, after that they went downhill for my tastes. After the original I liked, was shocked by the second one, a kungfu director, when 2 people fly at each other on motorcycles, with a closure that looks like 100mph, jump off their bikes, smack into each other fall to the ground and getup and start fighting. As with many action stars I can’t say I see a lot of range there with Cruise, but what he does is good enough for the type film he specializes in.

Edge of Tomorrow is one of my favorites from him. Top Gun and Oblivion being the others.

That whole Scientology thing just creeps me out.
True, if I had such wealth I'd put it to good use, not fool about with such nonsense. Scientology is very obviously a cult designed to turn coin and control people. The fact that Tom Cruise is involved, immediate turn off and I have zero interest in expanding his fortune...

Lost in Translation has become one of my all time top 10 movies. The first time I watched it was sort of "meh" but I have watched at least 1 more since then (maybe twice) and absolutely intend to watch on a regular basis. Bill Murray is really great including some classic Bill Murray moments like the video/photo shoots. Scarlet Johansen is absolutely perfect. I have never been there but the contrasts in Japanese culture seem very realistic.

The publicized personal details of Cruise’s life and Scientology besides being a controlling jerk (if reports are accurate) were definitely a hit against his popularity. Thinking what a jerk while watching a performance tends to interfere with immersion.

TBH that's kind of what I think and tend to avoid his films. That and the cookie cutter nature of them all...

Normally, I would probably like Cruise as an actor, but sometimes its hard to seperate the person from the performance. I won't not watch a movie of his (I'll catch Maverick when it comes to streaming), but I wouldn't go out of my way either.

Top Gun 2 was fantastic. The cinematography was excellent. The only weird part was how Tom Cruise is 59 but he’s also 35.

CGI is pretty impressive stuff.:D

Honestly though, I’ve heard nothing but stellar things about Top Gun Maverick. I think I will boot that one up this weekend.

It was very good. One interesting thing I didn’t think of until I just saw a review that pointed it out: there’s no agenda. It’s not trying to raise awareness for climate change (The Day After Tomorrow) or anything like that. It’s just a good movie with incredible aerial cinematography and some nice call-backs to this first movie.

I’m going to revisit the first Top Gun and then watch T.G.M. As I heard there’s quite a few nods to the first film as you mentioned.

What’s interesting, this film was actually filmed four years ago with principal photography I believe starting in late 2017, and it finally can showcase all the work that went into it. And with Tom cruise not just being an outstanding actor, but he has a lot of experience as a Director/producer, so I’m sure his DNA went deep into this film, given how historic the first one was.
