Some of his movies are excellent and others blah.
Good:
  • Risky Business
  • Top Gun
  • Mission Impossible (original)
  • A Few Good Men
  • Rain Man
  • Oblivion
  • Top Gun: Maverick- to be determined.
The first Mission Impossible was pure, after that they went downhill for my tastes. After the original I liked, was shocked by the second one, a kungfu director, when 2 people fly at each other on motorcycles, with a closure that looks like 100mph, jump off their bikes, smack into each other fall to the ground and getup and start fighting. As with many action stars I can’t say I see a lot of range there with Cruise, but what he does is good enough for the type film he specializes in.
There are a few others, action and non-action alike, where Tom Cruise shows off his acting chops. Namely:

Born on the Fourth of July
Interview with the Vampire
Jerry Maguire
Eyes Wide Shut (very good onscreen chemistry with Nicole Kidman)
Magnolia
Vanilla Sky
Collateral (I've never seen Michael Mann work with a bad actor)
Tropic Thunder (steals every scene he's in)
American Made (one of his best dramatic performances in recent years)

And as far as the Mission: Impossible movies go, the franchise has done a lot better at not going off the rails and phoning in sequels compared to most other blockbuster series these days (I'm looking at you, Fast & Furious).

Collateral is one of my faves...

Forgetful me, Interview with a Vampire is probably Tom Cruise‘s best performance. :)

Great film, saw it in the theatre when it came out with college roommates. One young lady who was kind of goth really liked it, a bit too much.o_O Also reintroduced me to the song "Sympathy for the Devil", which in the film was the Guns and Roses cover, but I still prefer the Stones.

This and Apocalypse Now are my favorite war films of al time; of which I just rewatched the Redux version since it was streaming on Netflix. The dramatic acting in these films is next level. Also honorable mention to Platoon.

Apocalypse Now illustrates the darkness of war perfectly. Man's inhumanity to man never ceases to amaze. Now it just about the $....

Father of the Bride (new version, with Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan , et. al). Enjoyable.

Cha Cha Real Smooth on Apple TV+. Quirky, good characters. Well done.
Currently in the middle of that one. I feel like both the Andy Garcia and Steve Martin versions are criminally underrated from a critical standpoint. Also started watching Spiderhead starring the talented Chris Hemsworth on Netflix. The writing leave something to be desired, but I'm intrigued by the premise.

The farther up the river they go, the more reality is left behind, or at least the characters's perception of it. :D
reality is over rated. I am NOT short fat bald and ugly, I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not I am not

there, I feel so much better now.

Saw The Prospect recently, and kind enjoyed it.

I didn't know anything about it beforehand (which probably helped!). I think if I'd read the wiki summary of its plot I'd have given it a hard pass, but it was enjoyable. It's not a very new or innovative story but it's made more interesting in a well-made and retro-futuristic setting. The only actor I recognised was Pedro Pascal - which again helped, as sometimes big-name actors can kinda overshadow a story - although Sophie Thatcher probably makes the movie.
