Gemma Arterton reminds me of a young Katherine Hepburn. Intense, intelligent, self-reliant, doesn't think much of other people. Set in the countryside where London children were sent during the war. Very expressive actor who doesn't need to talk. Her face tells you what she is thinking. Countryside is a big part of its appeal, at least for Yanks. Many scenes featuring the white cliffs of Dover. Plot is sort of standard, with an ending which did provide some surprise. Its all in the acting. Some excellent supporting actors.

Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022)- If you have never seen this, watching the series first is a must. As a stand alone, don’t bother.

However, if you are vested in the series (97% audience score at RT), it’s good if you just want to spend some more time familiar characters you like. The Dowager Countess of Grantham inherits a Villa in the South of France from a romantic admirer from decades ago, the obvious question why would someone do this, along with some intrigue about whom a parent could be, a movie gets filmed at Downton to pay for a new roof, Violet Crawley bows out.

These brief interludes from 2019 and now 2022, just don’t cut it as compared to a series. It’s why I prefer a series to remain a series and a movie remain a movie franchise.

i enjoyed reading the critical reviews over at Rotten Tomatoes: :)
  • The Anglophile equivalent of a Big Mac.
  • The trials and tribulations of passive income earners, where every other scene seems to be a discussion over tea and crumpets on who is inheriting what, is almost delightfully absurd this time around

"RRR" on Netflix. It's a three hours long action/buddy cop movie that's also a superhero/historical epic rom-com. And it has musical numbers. Completely bonkers.

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)

Another one that's "out there" has a comedic theme and pulls off the horror aspect pretty well. I think fans of the Hammer House of Horror films will like this one. Is a Ken Russell so you can pretty much guess the madness LOL...

Personally I like the film, it's executed well and harks back to a period where studios took risks in the name of creativity :)

Just finished the 2018 motion picture Final Score starring David Bautista and Pierce Brosnan, which can best be described as Die Hard in a football (soccer) stadium, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's about a terrorist who takes over a football stadium and rigs it with explosives (like Die Hard), and there's even a scene with the main character fighting the enemy disguised as a security guard (like Die Hard 3 with the police officers) and his niece is kidnapped by the ringleader (like Die Hard 4 and the daughter). But Dave Bautista makes the role his own and there are some very good action sequences. In my opinion an underrated film that could have benefitted from a bit more marketing.

Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
MV5BMjE1MTk5NDQ5Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODUxNzg0NzM@._V1_.jpg

A slow burn crime thriller that results in highly polarising views. It's oppressive, brutal, gratuitously violent in places and portrays some of the less pleasant yet harsher facts of life.

Dragged Across Concrete is almost a study in personalities at times. The interaction of the leads is frequently the focus of the direction, their conclusions & actions going forward. Film isn't for the action focused crowed, not the thinking man. If nothing else it's an interesting watch that may grow on you or repel...

A woman catches her husband cheating on her and attends a masquerade party and tricks him into falling back in love with her... more or less... it happens in a dirigible...

The posters are more interesting than the film...

Extravagant sets* and song and dance numbers once you hit the masquerade party...

*The special effects were pretty cool.

Finally got around to watching The Mule (2018) starring Clint Eastwood. Based on the true story of the eponymous mule Leo Sharp (1924-2016), the most prolific mule of all time. Always a fan of Clint Eastwood on screen. It makes me sad that he can only make so many more movies before he's no longer with us due to his advanced age. But I enjoy each and every one.
