I think the « for Mac » versions used to have different colors.

But now the only difference is they’re not including a Bolt USB Receiver in the box. They’re still selling it for the same price as the standard one tho 😂

Short correction:
Overall, the MX Master 4 is a far more sophisticated mouse than the Magic Mouse for every user.

Yo
u're welcome.

Honestly, practically any mouse is a better choice than the Magic Mouse.

Nope. I hate all other mice. I use my Magic Mouse with everything - including Windows.

I guess sweeping all encompassing statements about others without data are .... unhelpful?

:)

I agree that the ergonomics of the magic mouse are horrible, but heavy sidescroller usera there is unfortunately no other product that works even a tiny fraction as well. I was hoping the mx master 4 would improve that but seems like not.....

The Magic Mouse was a good idea in an intolerably awful to hold package.

Build something in a full size productivity mouse shape. A Magic Rat.

Yes. I tried the MM a few years ago and while I loved the functionality flat ergonomics for my hand were awful. Ended up getting a Logitech M650L which has been a great mouse. It take single AA cell which lasts a couple of years and works fine on Eneloop rechargeables. Best part was it was only $30 on sale.

Yes, most do, else there wouldn't be so much variation built around arch and comfort, including but not limited to mice that are held at an angle or sideways (like a soda can) to improve ergonomics.

I have seen people with bigger hands prefer smaller travel mice though, but only because they hold their mouse completely differently than others. Regardless, ergonomics are a thing, even if you use a trackball mouse.

As for the Magic Mouse, I hate it. Have only used it a handful of times (heh) and would honestly prefer their trackpad over it. Never believed in Apple fans' fascination of the trackpad until I got my MBP.
I have tried the vertical MX and I hated it haha.

I guess I’m just one of those weirdos that prefers the smaller, flatter MM 🤷🏼‍♂️

Haha - handful. I see what you did there 😂

The MX Master keeps coming up on this forum when people ask for alternatives for the Magic Mouse. Not sure if it's the most popular alternative mouse - but it's probably on the shortlist.

It's the diametric opposite of the Magic Mouse in terms of ergonomics - which makes it a useful contrast. That's partly a matter of personal choice, though - people have different size/shape hands so *gasp!!!* they prefer different sizes and shapes of mice.

Yes. I basically hold/move it with my palm, and my fingers are relaxed unless I need to click/scroll.

I find the Magic Mouse very uncomfortable to use, and doing anything with the much-vaunted touch features feels like attempting a Vulcan salute. 5 minutes with one and I'm ready to throw it out of the window. That much is subjective - other people will feel the same about the size and weight of the MX Master.

The first problem with the Magic Mouse is the charging (don't know why people defend it - being able to continue working while the mouse charges is just better - there's no downside unless you go completely form-over-function and can't abide the sight of a USB port) - the second, really, is just that one size doesn't fit all and you really need a choice of mouse sizes and shapes.

(There's a MX Anywhere if you want something smaller and lower that you can still charge on the fly).
Ahhh, I guess I am just doing way more clicking than most people? If I ever relaxed my hand and actually placed it on the palm-rest, I’d be moving it twice a second to have to click on something.

I’ll have to check out that MX Anywhere

The problem with third party keyboard and mice is that Apple changes OS integration requirements every release, forcing manufacturers to update their software. Eventually the manufacturers orphan the device. This rarely happens on Windows.
First thing to check with any 3rd party peripheral is whether it needs proprietary drivers - many don't. Certainly mice, keyboards, some sound cards, my 20 year-old Epson scanner...

My MX Master 2S works fine without any software installed - all the buttons, the vertical scroll wheel, the horizontal scroll wheel, the forward/back buttons are recognised by vanilla MacOS. All that's missing is the gesture facility which I never liked/used anyway and Logitech's keyboard/mouse sharing system which has been replaced by Apple's Universal Control (personally I always used Synergy for that anyway).

The only 3rd party mouse/keyboard software I've ever actually needed was the stand-alone utility to pair the old "Unifying Receiver" dongles with mice and keyboards (which is a one-and-done job to pair the mouse with the dongle & would be irrelevant if you use Bluetooth or just use the included dongle).

Not sure if the MX Master 4 breaks this with the haptics and the Bolt receiver ("worse" seems to be the new "better") - I didn't get the MX 3 and instead, this year, got a new-old MX 2S to replace my clapped-out 2S...

I mean… this is MacRumors, not MacLatestFactualNews, I don’t know what you expected.
There’s no rumor here. They’ve just created an article out of thin air because a company released another mouse.

The rumor mentioned was from the end of 2024 for crying out loud lmao

It will be hard to move the USB-C. I am one of the seemingly few people who love the MM due to the touch area on top of it, which no other device offers. I have the MX3 and use it... sparingly, I do not find it more ergonomic at all, always return to the flat soap bar of the MM :-D.
I find the Magic Mouse much more comfortable than the regular MX mice from Logitech (but less comfortable for me than the MX vertical), and I have heard it argued that the MM is actually more ergonomic. This is non-intuitive since we typically associate ergonomic devices with devices contoured to fit our bodies, but the basic argument is that: (1) the MM is intended to be used with fingertips alone, i.e., not "cupped" with the palm," (2) if the hand is held in a relaxed manner, the fingertips will naturally hang in the correct manner to use the MM, and (3) devices meant to be "palmed" only fit palms of a certain shape; everyone else being an approximate fit or not at all. I don't have any expertise on this subject, but I do use mine that way and therefore quite like the feel.

Despite the above, my daily driver is the Logitech MX Vertical, because my wrists get sore if I keep them constantly turned in the direction required by a regular mouse (either the MM or the regular Logitech MX).

Put the multi-touch hardware from the Magic Mouse into the MX body and you have a knockout winner. Logitech Options+ SW is still garbage so if Apple improves the ergonomics for Magic Mouse 3, I'll dump the MX mouse in a heartbeat.

I need a 3-button mouse for the software I use. Apple's mouse could be the best in the world, but if it only has 2 buttons, I'll need to work elsewhere. And for heaven's sake, make it chargeable as you use it.
