Just throwing theories out there.

What if the new iMac is based on the design of the new retina MBP? e.g. not ODD, thinner, higher res screen (not necessarily retina), USB3+TB, HDMI, SSD etc.

lol these words are straight from like page 1 of this thread, we're back to square one

correct me if im wrong but didn't the MBPs come out first last year still with snow leopard? Then the iMac and Mac Mini came out with lion preinstalled? Im pretty sure thats what happened. if so we have 1 more month to wait for the imacs and mac mini.

There's no need to get rid of the ODD; the iMac is a stationary desktop, and it's already quite thin. Additionally, I'm not too sure about HDMI coming to the iMac, but who knows. That being said, the rest of what you said is most likely right. Furthermore, some evolution of the "chin" is probably going to take place (maybe they can finally get rid of the silver part?).

That is correct, not all hope is lost.

Retina is not the reason why we hadn't Imac today...
the real reason is..stock!
They will approach it ends with Mountain Lion..
mid july end of August.as in the past...
thanks Cook..
ps.
the retina display is a total fail...to gain its qualities
all the appz must be redesigned? Its a MacBooKPro..not an Ipad
Ive...stop bitching!you and Forstall!

I can say without a doubt this is wrong. Apple flips its entire inventory of iMacs 7-14 days. Inventory is not a problem.
If you doubt this create a genius apt. and ask you genius when it was manufactured and when it shipped and when it was sold. In most cases this is less than a couple days.

So to buy or not???

Seeing the presentation and the really stunning new mbp, I am starting to rethink the iMac buy.
The mbp is super fast and much stronger in any aspect than the iMac, it even got more pixels than the 27".
So why to buy iMac??
( just for he big screen?)
Here you can have mobility, and if you want big screen you can always add one any time...
What do you say?

Also I don't think there will be new redesign to iMac this year, I agree with the previous post who say that in a month we will see silent update to iMac and mini.

You would get the iMac simply because it would be cheaper. A Desktop compared to a laptop of same specs will always be cheaper because it can be larger. If the retina 15" high-end sells for $2799 US, you can bet that it costs around $1500-1800 for the same specs.

As for the update later this year when ML comes out, yes very likely

No; you're wrong. iMacs were refreshed 5/3/11 and came with Snow Leopard. Lion came out in July. Mac Mini WAS refreshed with Lion.

No it's not

Nope, if you will custom iMac in apple site for the same configuration of the new MacBook )( i7 old model, since no ivy, 256ssd,8 gig) you will end with 2799 for inferior computer, while the same computer and better cost 2199 plus it's mobile .
( of course smaller screen, but more pixels hence more data)

If you custom configure it that way...

I'm talking about if the new iMacs were to come out by Apple with the same specs as the retina MB Pros, the price would certainly be cheaper. All the custom configs are rip offs, if u make a current iMac that matches up with the retina MB Pro of course that wouldn't make a fair comparison...

Plus, its been over a year since the last iMac, things get cheaper and cheaper.

All this talk about getting then next gen MBP with a TBD gives you the best of both worlds is a load a Cr@p if you have no need for the mobility aspect. Plus it is way more expensive. So I should go out and buy this pair for a huge sum of money for a bunch of mobility that I will never need. I call BS. If you have a great need for mobility then you were already in the market for a MBP. I have absolutely no need to do actual work on the go. It is one of the great perks of my job I guess. I have an iPad that handles everything I would ever need in a mobile device. I want a big 27" iMac and I am not paying a huge premium for mobility. So for me that is not even a consideration.

I think modern drives are effectively video drives - they can take sustained I/O. Combine this with lots of RAM on the CPU and caches on the controller, you no longer tend to see blips in throughput.

This is all fine for home use. This might not be fine if you are recording 24x7, e.g. for big database backends - so they may still exist. But caching tends to iron this out so its not a big deal for most people.

Hard drives are cheaper these days, but not all are more reliable.

Check the warranty on a drive - its a sign of its quality.

And set top box manufacturers whose devices record TV programs, specify video drives - for the very good reason that they are much more reliable when handling large and continuous video data. Which caching does not protect the drive from.

I am confused by the title of this thread. Why would anybody think there is actually going to an new iMac this year?

Because there has been a new iMac every year. Things can always change, but looking at the Mac buyer's guide will tell you that this refresh is long overdue.

Totally disappointed :(

Im tempted to find a used Mac Mini and max the ram and add an SSD, But you cant find used i7 mini anywhere in AU, Dont want an i5

BOO

An eventual redesigned iMac (personally I predict WWDC 2013, meaning 2012 will be a spec bump) will probably borrow design cues from the latest MBP Retina. It'll probably drop the Optical Drive, be thinner, have more actual display versus bezel (maybe similar to the Thunderbolt Display) and might even borrow the new air ventilation system and vent slots on the back/sides. I predict SSDs too.

Just my guesses.

So I've waited all winter and spring for June 11th...

I was going to buy an iMac in January but that seemed stupid. Just wait a few more months. Then April... well the update was imminent, right, since the new CPU's were available? May... any Tuesday now. Definitely can't buy a 2011 iMac now! Well, what's a few more weeks till June 11th after I've waited this long? June 11th!!! iMacs today!! NOT!!! Now everyone thinks they'll be out with Mountain Lion in July? Really?? Are you sure about that? Everyone was sure about today, too. Well guess what? Call me an idiot or anything else. I just ordered a new 21.5" iMac!!! i7 Processor, 1 TB hard drive, 6770M graphics. I'll add after market memory. I say end the misery. You want an iMac... order it. About a 50/50 chance I'd say you'll see the refresh with Mountain Lion in July. Yeah I probably paid a little much for a 2011 computer, but it's still way less than the new fancy laptops and I got the computer I've wanted for over 2 years now! Just my 2 cents. I got tired of waiting. I mean REALLY tired. My 1st Mac since 1994! Right decision for me. This machine will do everything I need it to do. Let them come out with Retina iMacs. I don't want that anyway. Go ahead... Bash me :)

There's good logic in that. For me, the 2011 MacBook Air spoiled every other computer I use because it's so lightning fast so it's desktop with SSD or no desktop at all! So I'll get by with the MacBook Air shared between me and my wife and wait...

Any chance of a iMac release before the end of WWDC or even the back to school promo?

The back to school promo ends in September so yea, there's a good chance (I'd say 60% probability) of a refreshed iMac released before the end of the campaign...

At this stage it's hard to predict when the iMac refresh will take place. To me, the ivy bridge processor adds very little in CPU terms, the GPUs in the 2011 iMacs were fine (ok, so the current stock is better but that is only really relevant to gamers and video editors) especially top-end ones, screen excellent so the pressure on Apple to update is less acute as people imagine.

Another aspect to consider, IMO would be that of SSD capacity. If the new MacBook Pro takes off, I'd imagine there may even be capacity constraints on the new SSDs so even less likely that Apple will share them out in any refreshed or redesigned iMacs. They are also probably waiting for real world experience of the new heat sink system before transferring that to a redesigned iMac.

Why would rumors even roll out about the iMac coming since months and even just weeks ago? It got us all riled up for squat.

I want ivy bridge for USB 3 bluetooth 4 and some nice SSD options.
