Another tuesday has passed, still no iMac news...

Anyway, I was just wondering which graphics cards would likely to be included in the new iMac's? I've heard about Radeon 7970m but what about a lower end one in let's say a 21"?

I've covered this in a couple of other threads (or perhaps even this one, 20 or so pages back).

Apple is evidently moving away from AMD, so you can forget about the 7970m. The likely choices are:

Base 21": Nvidia GTX 650M
Top 21" Nvidia GTX 660M
Base 27": Nvidia GTX 660M
Top 27": Nvidia GTX 680M

This of course assumes Apple even retains the same screen sizes. Regardless, if they want to use new 28nm Kepler cards from Nvidia, those are pretty much the only choices. (There's stuff below the 650M, but traditionally they haven't used a weaker card in the weakest iMac than the discrete card they use in the MBPs.)

an imac with 680m would have been truly awesome. .... wish it comes soon. My bank account is about to burst of money I owe Apple.

Why am I forced to buy 27" to get the 680M? :(
I hope the top 21.5" will have option for 680M.

Wow I'm talking like I'm gonna play BF3 and D3 at the max settings.
I'm just hope to enjoy The Sims 3 (and 4?) and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 (and 4?) at max settings. Will the 660M be enough?

For the same reason you're forced to buy the 27" to get the 6970m today? (Probably something to do with Apple's assessment of what you need to drive the resolution of the screen, or heat considerations.)

The 660M is a tad below the 6970m, but roughly twice as fast as the 6770m on today's 21". It should be fine for less demanding games for a few years.

The 660m looks like a decent card. My budget probably won't allow a 27" or whatever the highend model is (wife won't allow it! :( ) so looks like high end 21.5" or whatever smaller size there is, is the one for me. I was researching possible 600m series cards that would appear in the iMac nad I must say that Fort2j's list seems spot on.

If I had to guess, I would say the higher end 21.5" model would be:

i5 3570s (optional i7 3770s) with the GTX 660m.

I hope we see 128gb SSD standard, with like a sub $200 upgrade to 256 (although $100 would be accurate, we are talking about Apple here). I also hope we see 8gb of ram standard.

I might anger some, but I feel that spinning disks have no place in the iMac anymore. Keep it as an option, but put SSDs standard accross the board. Lets face it, the HDD just doesn't fair well inside of a computer that has an ambient temperature of 60-70c under load. They cook themselves and die after 1-2 years. I'd rather have an SSD in there which is wayless vulnerable to heat as compared to an HDD. Let the NAS handle all the media or some external thunderbolt/usb3 solution. :D

Standard SSD's across the board with BTO options to add spinners as secondary drives would be very pleasing to me.. I don't personally need more than 256GB anyway...

I agree. Knowing that the GPU performance will be about double the current offerings, and that SSD options may drop in price / offer more, is what is preventing me from going with a current model. As well as the potential screen upgrade / redesign.

Oh I really wish we had some more information!

Same. What's sad is that I started looking at some of the All-in-one PC's and NOT ONE of them could match my expectations for their price, which makes it even harder for me not to wait for the iMac to come out.

In my opinion, Mac's are really becoming more and more cost-competitive with Windows PC's (with the exception of the Mac Mini's and Mac Pro's and no BTO add-ons) and if only Apple would leak more information about their products, I'm sure more and more people would make the jump to Apple.

Not one Ultrabook manufacturer can make their products any cheaper than the MBA's, let alone better in terms of the form factor, battery life, design, hardware specs, etc. And don't even get me started on All-in-one PC's failed attempt to replicate the iMac's.

I just want it built with some sort of HD caddy, making it super simple to replace the hard drive. If possible, I'd want at least 2 internal.

I don't need a superdrive, but please don't "Retina" the iMac in that by shaving .5mm of it somewhere I can't make any upgrades on my own anymore, which is complete ********.

I basically want them to offer a version in which you can, say, put 4 ssd's. The space is there. And you can have internal transfers to all your hard drives; your time machine big mofo hard disk would then be either directly connected by USB3 or NASd somewhere on your LAN. And it goes without saying that this should be easily done by the end user. Now that would be an epic iMac.

I can imagine them only selling the 27" as a TB display- not as an iMac. (Not to give them any ideas...)

Would be nice with a 1tb ssd option so I could ditch the hard drive entirely but still have lotsa disk space... That would be awesome!

If you want to pay $2000+ for the upgrade...
Even so, Apple won't give you that option.

Considering the 768GB SSD option on the rMBP runs you about $950 more.

I don't see how that contradicts him...

Uhh what? He said there's not an HDMI input on the MBP...

Yea, as iEdd helped explain, it's only a one-way HDMI output port, not an input. Knowing Apple, they won't allow you to use the MBP screen for any external device.

However, given that the iMac is a desktop and with a larger screen, and that people have been trying to find ways to get external devices to play on the iMac, Apple may think differently. But I wouldn't hold my breath though. The 2011 iMacs and Thunderbolt Display officially broke the HDMI input of the Thunderbolt port. People who want to connect their gaming consoles or blu-ray players have to resort to a 2010 iMac or Apple Cinema Display unfortunately.

I really wish we could get some more information about when this new iMac will come out or whether or not it will feature a full redesign. I check MacRumors and the other related sites so much each day in hopes of learning something. It's driving me nuts. Wish I just bought the 2011 months ago. If I do that now I know the new model will be out 15 days after my purchase leaving me SOL, and the GPUs will be double the performance accross the board - leaving me SOL again LOL

If we all chip in a buck so you'll buy now - then we'll all get the new one in 15 days! Win/win! :)
