How would the usual customer tell the difference? Apple isn't going to make the iMac look exactly like that. People can thumb me down all they want, but the fact remains that the majority of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference and become confused which completely conflicts with apple's design purpose. You see and iPad and you automatically know it's an iPad. You see an iMac and immediately know it's an iMac. All apple needs to do is just raise the height of it to line up with the iMac.
Not mention they wouldn't have as much room for internal components. Keep dreaming people it's not gonna happen.
So, I totally bought a 27" iMac last week and now the buyers remorse is starting hit me after seeing these retina display rumors. I think Ill go return before my 14 days are up.
I was only refering to the dimensions of both machines. They can look diffenrent casing wise but as long as the display portion of both products line up I am satisfied.
On another note if Apple decides to go retina on all macs wouldn't they have to up the resolution on the TBD?

Btw the Retina iMacs could come out in 2012, but it absolutely could be later than June (could be much later, and that's if they come in 2012 at all)
I'm getting the feeling that too many people buy their RAM from Apple...
Here's what I'm hoping for:
1. Looks good.
2. Ivy Bridge.
Easy to please?![]()

What makes you doubt a 2012 imac
Thought I'd try and squeeze what I could from the local apple store and got speaking to a girl who has been following this forum too, she told me they normally get a heads up that new iMacs are coming
Those who know, don't say.

Have been reading this thread for way too long now... Thought march was a long time to wait back in December :/ but this will be my first iMac so I'll keep waiting. Actually, I made the case for a Retina iMac in 2012 before the rumors came out
I think there's a better-than-50% chance of a Retina iMac in 2012, but most likely later than June—Retina on the iMac is both more challenging technically and less of a priority (lower sales and slower growth in sales). A Retina iPad already was a pretty amazing feat; I think Retina iMac really soon is possible but kinda getting carried away. Also the iMac rumors have been much more vague than the MBP ones
Anyway, I was saying that mostly for the non-expert people who sometimes stumble into these forums looking for buying advice—a Retina iMac soon is not a certainty at all
Do you think it'll be WWDC?
I'll bet you there are no retina iMacs in 2012. Makes zero sense to me.
1. Very significant increase in cost at a time when the world economy is hardly booming and ready for big price hikes. Basically Apple would have to swallow the additional cost whilst holding prices at 2011 levels. No chance of that, imho.
2. We are years from mobile graphics chips being able to run current games - e.g. Crysis - at 2560x1440 on high settings. No chance of running at 4k. So you'd be forced to play at reduced resolution anyway - i.e. what's the point.
3. The pixels are already pretty damned small. When was the last time anyone complained about a horrible pixelated image on a 27" iMac? Demand for retina is confined to a few geeks who just want the best all the time - I doubt the man in the street has any desire for it whatsoever.

Radeon 7970m will be playable at 2560x1440 in Crysis 2 with everything turned up to max.
Yes but there's 3 more models to consider. I know most people on these forums talk as if the top end 27" is the only model and the "default iMac", but we all know that this isn't the case. If not Apple would put the 7970 in all the iMacs, but what are the odds of that?

My point was that mobile GPUs of that ilk are not "years away" - they are available now.
I doubt it.
The 7870 (non-M) is basically the same processor, clocked higher. (7870 = 1GHz, 7970m = 850MHz).
The 7870 manages 24fps at that res - i.e. not playable. 7970m will be slower than that.
So NO CHANCE of running 4k x 2k or whatever "retina" resolution Apple would go for.

No, they aren't.
I grant you, 2013 will see mobile chips that can do this though. So it's not "years away".
