Other makers have moved away from the notch, others have introduced under the glass fingerprint readers. I'm seeing some level of innovation, for apple fans, we have to wait longer. 2020 is the rumored time that the notch may go away.

Yeah... I'm really considering the OnePlus 7 Pro. Better than the Xs Max at half the price. Though I'll miss wireless charging, it's a nice feature.

I think I'm going to have to go with the OnePlus 7 Pro this upgrade cycle. I hate android, however at this point I'm going to have to give it a try. I can always return it if I don't like it. This iPhone looks like hot garbage, and I haven't been impressed with my iPhone XS Max.

Pretty much in the exact same frame of mind as you, only my current unit is an XR. The 7 Pro looks absolutely amazing.

I never use the front-facing camera so having it as a mechanical pop-up is totally fine for me, I'd gladly take that in exchange for more screen.

If it takes amazing pics the design won’t mean much

Hope it’s not blacked out lens though
That's what I'm curious to see. Why three lenses? What feature is that going to support?

Came here to see the general mood and not surprised at the animosity. Honestly, I don't even pay attention to the back of my phone. It's just not a consideration for me.

I'm very interested in the 6.5" phone but no doubt it will start at $1299 so pricing will keep me away from it.

Beside the fact this design being insanely bad aesthetically - if this is true - WHY on earth would they need a square bump for the XR? Could they not just use the current design?

If they did that then the XR would look better than the “premium” iPhone models. And we can’t have that!

Like I keep saying over and over that I will not be buying another iPhone unless they get rid of the notch and the camera bump. I'm hopeful about the notch eventually being gone due to Samsung in fact already has tech that can do this PROPERLY (I'm not talking about the ones on low end Chinese companies which technically doesn't count as true advanced tech) but has yet made it mainstream. So this I see it in a few years? I'd say 2021-2022 for a 100% no notch design. But that camera bump...how are they going to get that down without increasing the thickness of the phone?? I am not hopeful.

Should also put the battery bump into the body, would eliminate the need to buy a battery bump case, and would match the design perfectly. And an additional (slightly smaller) chin notch would be nice. Remove the lightning port completely, make slow wireless charging mandatory. Look ma, no cables !!!

Its good that Ive is leaving. Cos if that abortion is due to his great design skills. Ololol.

An iPhone without USB-C in 2019 is an iPhone that isn’t worth my money. Period. Lightning is archaic. Apple, this is why you’re losing iPhone sales. You’re not giving people what they want.

If there is a noticeable difference in image quality because of the larger lens/sensor then they surely will get over the camera bump.

Face it, "image quality" is relative. its a freakin smart phone with a minuscule sensor and marginal lens; two things that are absolutely required for a quality image. People who are really interested in higher quality images are going to use a real camera.
Secondly, their "software manipulated boca in portrait mode is really abysmal with all the fuzziness around the edges. Its a marketing gimmick that is enabled by faster processors which can manipulate the picture but its still half baked.
They need to lose the camera bump for a variety of reason, the least being its ugly.

There is no functional reason to have that hideous protuberance rather than increasing the phone thickness by 1-2 mm and having all flush and potentially increasing significantly the battery life in the process.
This design manages to compromise both form AND function.

Wow. I must say, you sound like you possess a lot of technical knowledge—I’m very impressed by your erudition in design and engineering practicalities as demonstrated in your post. I would easily nominate you as Apple’s new chief design officer.

The conclusion, the bolded, has nothing to do with your first two paragraphs. The camera bump is not going anywhere and computation photography is edging its way toward taking the place of $3000 worth of equipment.

All of those are technologies, not designs or intellectual property.

I also find it funny how it's always Apple vs literally everyone else in the phone industry combined.

thats cause all the apple fanboys makes it apple vs everyone else. yeah all of these are techs, didnt claim any design or ip. nevertheless it doesnt take away that apple takes some from android, and vice versa, i frankly have no problem with it and neither should anyone else, but apparently apple fanboys gets tripped up about what apple does and what others do to copy.

That’s not what you said, you said the s10 has Dolby vision. No need to be dishonest.

Kirin doesn’t have an 8core npu it has an inferior npu compared to apple a12.
Actually stainless steel is premium over aluminum and plastic.
Any android phones with nvme based storage, no, guess not.

So yeah the iPhone has premium hardware components not found in any android flagships, guess you were wrong.
ur not right either :D

best selling iphone XR is aluminium, the XS and MAx has a serious achille heels in the form of intel modem, two of my friends had it and returned it in a week after they couldn't pick up calls where their previous X with qualcomm modem could.

nvme is overkill for a phone, i barely notice any difference with my nvme 960 pro boot drive vs sata. unless you have usb-c, 5g, or any other type of fast connectivity the most you'll notice is when you restarting your phone tbh.

as far as kirin goes, huawei is late to the game but they are doing pretty decently consider they started with nothing only couple years ago, vs apple and and qualcomm whos been developing their own chip since the introduction of smartphones.

Not too excited about that epic camera square. Wish Apple would eliminate the camera bump, thicken the phone a little and put in a larger battery. Oh and at these prices, use actual sapphire lens instead of the stuff that has a hardness closer to regular glass. Speaking of glass, dump the glass backing for ceramic. If Apple wants to charge a premium, the product needs to actually differentiate that premium from everyone else. Lastly, please Apple, get those storage prices back down to Earth.
With Cook, this would only happen in our dreams. Some will come at one point, but may never come in a complete package. One can always hope though.
Does no one use a case? A case will somewhat “conceal” the camera bump.

I like my Apple leather cases. The camera bump is a non-issue for me. The missing USB-C port is more of a concern.
I did not use the case until iPhone XS Max only because this phone is ridiculously expensive and want to protect it a bit to use longer. Otherwise I would not put a case. My naked iPhone 6s Plus got dropped numerous times (Low height) but otherwise no screen crack. Aluminium was truly impressive.
I have upgraded annually or almost, having an X, 7 Plus, 6S Plus and 6 Plus.

I only skipped the XS/XS Max in recent releases. And I can’t see any reason to swap out my X this year unless I decide to go Max or R for more screen. And I would only go R if the new R is not a step down from my current X in features.

This seems like it is setting up to be a fairly unimpressive upgrade cycle.

However, having skipped the opportunity in 12 and 13, PLEASE Apple, let’s have a MAJOR overhaul of Springboard in iOS 14 next year. Sooooooo old. We need an innovative and groundbreaking UI transformation.
I would skip XS this year if my iPhone 6s Plus still worked. Who needs yearly upgrade anyway?

As for the UI, I feel apple is slowly leaning towards adding icon packs to iOS in App Store. However, if they still heavily focus on maintaining a consistent UI, I don’t think iOS 14 “redesign” would wow a lot of people. Remember, people outside tech world don’t even realise how many handy features iOS has introduced, let alone customising the system for a fresher look. One prime example is my colleague just know markup tool exist because I tell him.
Disgusting. Once again, Apple putting function over form.
Nah. If Apple put function over form, they would’ve slowly introduce USB-C ports instead of taking out every single f normal ports, including USB-A port, on their MacBook Pro lineup. Also, Apple would never introduce camera bump but increase device thickness to incorporate larger battery.
In my eyes, Apple is acting as inconsistent as they possibly can before things start falling apart. Unfortunately, that turning point is still far from our vision.

I cannot find any reason to upgrade from my 6s plus, I can call, text, take pictures, use maps. I just don't need Animoji's.
Plus use an actually reliable Touch ID and play games decently, even latest titles.

With that being said, A12X is truly a beast, not gonna lie.

Once you put a case on this, you hardly notice the lens or the bump. I've done 2 short films using the iPhone XS max, and if this camera will give better depth of field, you will see the trend pick up speed with regard to more filmmakers using their mobile to shoot films. With the software getting better (Filmic pro), it's getting harder and harder to tell a difference each year between your iPhone and a 10k camera.
Yet, Hollywood and Time Warners pour millions if not billions of money into making next potential blockbusters, including using advanced camera systems that average people could only dream of. I know, I am aware of 10x optical zoom on one Android device, but iPhone does not have it. And, digital zoom is as horrible as always.
And here, a whole post dedicated to rant how horrible iPhone camera is despite its $1000 price tag, which I tend to agree.

I'm switching to Android this fall. I'm getting Xperia 1. The iPhone 6SSSSS Plus is boring, ugly, fat and obese!
I would argue you are a bit too emotional, yet I will guarantee you the “6SS...S” will only become longer and longer. Welcome to a highly saturated market.
