What to Expect From the Next-Generation 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro

Following a rumor that Apple has a product announcement planned for tomorrow, and the discovery of an unreleased MacBook Pro in a Canadian regulatory database, it appears that new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models might finally be imminent.

Ahead of the potential launch, we have recapped everything that we have heard so far about the next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

M2 Pro and M2 Max Chips

A key new feature of the next MacBook Pro models is expected to be M2 Pro and M2 Max chips for faster performance. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said those chips will offer only "marginal" performance improvements over the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in the current models, as leaked benchmarks suggested last year.

Wi-Fi 6E

Wireless frequency ranges mentioned in the Canadian regulatory filing indicate that the new MacBook Pro will support Wi-Fi 6E, which extends Wi-Fi to the 6GHz band for more bandwidth, faster speeds, and lower latency. The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro support standard Wi-Fi 6, which is limited to 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Faster RAM

The new MacBook Pro models are rumored to be equipped with "very high-bandwidth, high-speed RAM," but details are unclear. On a purely speculative basis, it is possible that the new models could be equipped with Samsung's latest LPDDR5X RAM for up to 33% increased memory bandwidth with up to 20% less power consumption.

No Design Changes

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Gurman have both suggested that the new MacBook Pro models will have no external design changes and few other major features.

This aspect wouldn't be too surprising, as Apple fully redesigned the high-end MacBook Pros in October 2021 with more ports like HDMI and MagSafe, a notch at the top of the display, an all-black keyboard area, and more. MacBooks often go multiple generations between major hardware changes, so a spec bump in 2023 is a reasonable expectation.

Would be cool if the new MBPs supported eSIM for cellular connectivity.

For MBP workloads transistor budget is far better spent on the neural engine. This is what does the acceleration where PC's will use the GPU. As you mentioned Apple silicon already has dedicated media IP so GPU isn't tapped for that. The only use for the GPU would be games, and rendering, and we know how much Apple cares about that market for macOS.
And yet, it was Apple who advertised along with Nvidia GPU. M1 Max = mobile RT 3080, M1 Ultra = RTX 3090. It seems they are lying, huh?

You say so? Huh ??? They need better GPU performance ? Let me ask you this. What line of work are you in and how do you make use of the GPU? What tasks do you run ? What type of processing math do you do. I say that because, even if you are using the GPUs to mine crypto currencies. What is available now, goes head to head with dedicated devices 4 times the cost. So let’s be real
There are so many software require higher GPU power and yet you are arguing that Mac does not need such power? What kind of logic is that? The truth is Apple themselves compared their GPU to RTX 30 series.

What about HDMI 2.1? They have to at least add support for that, right?
If it has that, it might turn into a “shut up and take my money” type situation for me…

The premise of using a Samsung 8k TV as a display at half the price of the apple 6k display is very tempting.

I don't see Apple dropping this incremental update and then a M3/3nm version of the same product in the same year. I think this means the 3nm is 12-18 months further out which may make sense because they want time to release it in the iPhone and the 15" macbook air; which let's be honest, everyone is waiting for and is great placement for the more efficient chip.

For me the world is on track for a big old recession so it would be nice if they lowered their prices. My biggest gripe is the prices the charge for SSD upgrades, its criminal!

Plus because we all create so much data with our photos and videos we should all have 8Tb drives to house them all as standard lol

It would be nice to have a 16tb option, but at non insane prices.

I thought for sure we would be looking at updates once every two years... Is it worth the upgrade from the Oct 2021 MBPs? Still runs decent, but 6E is attractive. Thoughts?
Only if you have money to burn. This is for those who did not buy 1st generation. I don’t remember a first generation product that didn’t have issues. I jumped on the 2021 model and I have had “0” issues and it is the best (overall) computer I have ever owned. The first that I can remember that does what I need and more (though I capped at 4K video and don’t see going further for some time or ever).

I’m waiting for them to kill the MacBook line entirely and replace it with a iPad similar to Samsung Dex. Plug your iPad into a monitor via usbC and boom you’re running full blown Mac osx. Unplug your in iPad mode. Want laptop mode? Hook up your Smart Keyboard. This is all possible and the shift to unifying their own chipsets across iPad and Mac is showing we are trending to this. I believe the fanless MacBooks with M1/M2 are just test products to determine this feasibility .

Ming chow and Wall Street analysts - -please PM me for my address to send my check.

If you need 8TB of storage on a MacBook ProHard drive you are doing something very very wrong. Let’s say for a minute that you are a film editor which requires the most amount of storage. You should not be storing all your files on the MacBook Pro.
I mean besides editing film, there is no field in the world that requires this amount of storage.
It is not able “storaging” but rendering. One project can take up a lot of space, depending on how long your time frame your video is and how many shots you have.

Apple understood the need for 8TB of on-board storage. They listened to the Pros. 4TB and up are for Pros who can afford paying the costs, not you-tubers or general public usage.

And yet, it was Apple who advertised along with Nvidia GPU. M1 Max = mobile RT 3080, M1 Ultra = RTX 3090. It seems they are lying, huh?
They fudged the charts remember. Tricked me......

TBH I find the GPU fine for non final rendering tasks, however non optimised M apps are winding me up at present, where the interface can slow down. Open the same model on a PC and its super fast.

I never expect Apple to even try and compete with Nvidia these days, hence as mentioned here before, a PC sat next to me with a 4090 in it [which is twice the speed of the Mac Studio ultra].

Yeah i have a friend who’s been talking about it for years! I suppose one day he’s bound to be right.

Here in the UK it’s our gas and electricity that are killing us. In the commercial sector electricity has quadrupled. Some Restaurants and body shops even are paying up to 10k a month in electric alone
Dang :( I'm sorry to hear it pal. That really sucks. It's always the hard working lower and middle class that suffers eh? The backbone of society and we're the ones left to pick up the pieces when it falls apart.

Referring back to your previous post, 8TB standard would be amazing. I mean, that's just absurd but I love it. I'm a little bit of a data hoarder myself. You know what looks like a lot of fun? Setting up a NAS at home. Have you ever looked into one?

20% performance boost is not a minor update/refresh. If you have a 2021 MacBook Pro, this will be a very compelling upgrade for pretty much anyone who takes full advantage of that industry-leading Apple Silicon performance.

Hoping for more chip shortages stat so I can milk the max amount of time I can have the latest MacBook Pro…
