M2 iMac refresh, Apple TV 4k 4th gen with either the A17Pro or A17 variation to take advantage of the AAA game title ports on the big screen in the Apple Ecosystem, iPad mini refresh with A17Pro/A17 variant for the AAA game titles.

i can see a mention of switching over keyboards/mice/etc over to USB-C but honestly would be better for just a press release or a silent release.

Scary Fast refers to Resident Evil games being ported over and people are reading to much into the finder face just a fun gimmick to play into Halloween.

This is just my 2 cents.

Edit: Resident Evil is expected to be released on Oct 30, 2023 which is the same day as this event.
I am fully on board with your reading of the tea leaves. I just can not see Apple releasing the new M3 Processor line with a web-only evening event - it makes no sense to me. When has Apple ever done an evening product release - answer: NEVER. Keep in mind, that Apple is the king of consumer product marketing and if this is how they roll out the new M3 line then someone needs to be fired.

These claims about lower Mac sales and that's why they need to announce the new CPU is garbage, all PC sales are down so it's the market, not just Apple. Furthermore, another argument being made is they need M3 to counter the Qualcomm announcement of a mobile CPU that beats the M2 line. This is also garbage since this Qualcomm CPU is not shipping until summer 2024 (ROFL since we will be talking about M3 Extreme and M4's by then) and the last time Qualcomm released CPU performance specs they were shown to be wildly optimistic - i.e. exaggerations.

I expect Apple will be updating the 24" iMac to the M2, hopefully with an M2Pro option and also switching to full USB-C. This is Apple's last chance to update the 24" iMac with an M2 since 2024 will be the year of the M3's. I would love for them to also introduce a new 27" iMac with an M2Pro and M2Max which would be extremely exciting and desired.

If the M3 chip is in limited supply
Well, that is the question. Sure, over on the thread that is discussing the M3 people like to speculate about production problems.

But Apple is expected to sell over 80 million iPhone 15 models by the end of the year. If only 10% of those are the "Pro" versions that means 8 million A17 processors. This is far, far more than the number of iMacs or 14" or 16 MBPs that Apple will sell.

The demand on TSMC to provide processors for iMac or MBP is not likely to be much of a bump for them.

I was just using the scare term as meaning something unexpected. ;)

Previous 27" iMac's were not necessary high priced, like the Studio Mac and Studio display component pairing IMHO.

From a previous Mac Rumors article

Macs Expected to Use M3 Chip

  • 13-inch ‌MacBook Air‌
  • 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro
  • Mac mini
  • 24-inch iMac
Obviously something on the above list will show up on the Halloween event.

What I don't expect yet is below (too early).

Macs Expected to Use M3 Pro Chip

  • ‌Mac mini‌
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro
  • 16-inch MacBook Pro

Macs Expected to Use M3 Max Chip

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro
  • ‌Mac Studio‌
eh? 14" also gets max chip and its already been said we are getting the pros.......

I think the right strategy is focus on the 14 + 16" MBP with M3 pro and Max. M2 is fine for the air for now.
Imac and mini - who knows

I will wait for M4 😗
I have a 14" MacBook Pro with an M1Pro and it's still an awesome machine with a fantastic display. Absolutely no need to upgrade to an M3 in 2024 and maybe not an M4 in 2025. Now if only my company would switch out those crappy, heavy, power-hungry, lap burning Dell laptops for a MacBook Pro - but this would eliminate too many IT jobs.

the same web only event announced M chips.

I would bet money that the latest Gurman predictions are correct. He is always right when this close to an announcement.

if I didnt rely on raytracing as part of my job [currently using a PC for this], I wouldn't be upgrading my M1 14 MBP max either.

FYI, 9to5 Mac reported that the iPhone Pro is expected to account for 60% of the iPhone 15 sales. The Pro models have been outselling the non-pro for a while.

This is plain wrong. What would they upgrade the 14&16 MBPs to then?

You simply can't have iMac going to M2 and at the same event have MBPs going to M3 Pro&Max. It just wouldn't work no matter how much you want to spin it.

Everything is pointing towards M3 Pro and Max. The question is - will the iMac get M3 and M3 Pro or just M3?

We will see but M2 is very very unlikely. Apple would be a laughing stock if they pulled M2 iMac.

This thing will be settled on monday but it would be nice if people were using logic and stop ignoring all the clues.

Chances of M2 event? - less than 5%
Chances of M3+ event? over 90%

Can we just move on from that?

Yeah, thats what I'm waiting for too. Can't wait to see what they show us. Would love to get the M3 Studio but I think that is spring the earliest (I really hope). Otherwise WWDC but I really hope Spring is when we get Mac Mini and Studio

"Scary Fast" could also hint at a new pro-level 8K monitor and a lower-priced 6K monitor, now with 120Hz refresh rate. Hey, at least a guy can hope, now that there's a Dell 6K monitor available for thousands less than Apple's current offering.

Windows 10 and 11 is far better experience out the box for general office productivity.

I mostly use a Mac but this negative view of windows is from the 90s! (Only Vista and maybe Windows 8 were disappointing)
I work in a Mac-dominant setting. Every time we have Windows-using folks from the "outside" visiting us I get the same feeling as I had in the 90's (and 2000s) - intrusive and unfocused OS either on cheap awful boxes or Apple knock-offs. And more to the point, I cannot see one can claim an increase general office productivity (apart from MS purposefully crippling the Office suite on a Mac).

The window management on windows out of the box is superior to that on Mac OS without having to seek and download additional software.

In my experience office runs just as well on my macs as it does on PC.

I can’t wait for the day when Mac is the preferred choice in the enterprise. There is no innovation in the PC space.

Not many people have talked about this but I hope the base M3 will support more than one external screen natively, the one screen limitation is so ridiculous!

Aside from trying to pimp out the Mac mini and make more money selling more displays (aka more waste ... so much for "green" Apple), I don't understand why they have not brought back the 27" iMac.

Apple is "Green" only when it comes to $$$

Thank goodness Apple seems to be favoring performance lately. MBP battery life is already superb, so performance is very much where Apple's efforts should focus.

Note that unlike battery improvements, each performance improvement is functionally a real reduction in price, because users can do more without spending more. E.g. I paid similar ~$4k for loaded MBPs in 2011, 2017 and 2023. Similar price but each new box was many times stronger than the previous MBP.
It's only a real reduction in price if you actually need the extra performance. For many (most?) of us, even the base M1 chip is massive overkill. The base price of the M2 machines increased in price. So for those people who won't gain any real world gains from performance increases, there is not a real reduction in price at all.

You ever been on a long haul flight? These laptops do definitely have epic battery life, but I'd love to see quite a lot more.

I strongly suspect that most users would actually gain a hell of a lot from increased battery performance, and nothing at all from increased core counts, and clock speed.

For my particular use case, a base M1 chip would be fine. However, I want the biggest laptop screen I can get, and also need more RAM than any of the laptops with base chips allow. Thus I had to get a MBP with M1 Pro chip to get the RAM I needed. I don't do any graphics work at all, and don't play games, so having an M1 with 8 GPU cores, or an M1 Max with 32 GPU cores would make absolutely zero difference to me. The 16" M1P MBP came with minimum chip spec of 10 CPU / 16 GPU cores. Can you see how annoying it is for me to have to pay extra for all these cores I will never use? The 16" M2P MBP came with minimum chip spec of 12 CPU / 19 GPU cores, and a price bump. Can you see how I would get absolutely zero "real reduction in price" if I were to upgrade? However, the M2 MBP's came with increased battery life, and that would be pretty sweet. I also have to pay for a fan and thicker case, and yet in the year or so of daily use, the fans have never spun up once. I've seen YT reviews, and the reviewers are having to go to insane lengths to throw enough graphics tasks at these machines to even get the fans to spin up. What I am saying is that there are two types of users, those that still need more and more power, especially with the GPU's, and those that don't even need the power of the most basic M1 chip, but do want all the other improvements, such as increased battery, spec bumps to port versions, improved screen and sound, etc.

I will be really interested if the base M3 chip allows even more RAM than 24GB. The 15" MBA is a machine I would love.... but only if it came with a 16" screen, instead of 15", gah.

I don't understand why they have not brought back the 27" iMac.
Evidently Apple doesn't see it as a priority. The company exists to make money and maximize profit. They develop and release the products their research tells them are likely the most profitable. Seems self evident that if a 27in. iMac were truly worthwhile and profitable for them it would already be in the line-up.

No new HomePod mini ?
Man, I wish we'd have no latency speakers for the Mac, made by Apple.
