Depth and soul in the way it looks and works. I am so happy to see the WWDC invite having depth and shadow effects in the '25'.

Also, I want to tap/click on buttons, not text. I want buttons to return across the whole system. Like in the top left when you go back in a certain menu for example. A nice button with a 'back' arrow will do just fine. Before the current screen, I know where I came from so I don't need a word to explain that to me. If people do want that, that should be an accessibility feature. Tapping those words have never made sense to me since iOS 7 and they clutter the screen.

I wrote this idea a while ago but thought it might fit here…

A crazy idea for Apple.

There're many comments, in various threads, where Apple fans wish Apple would slow down — or even stop — adding software features, and focus on tightening-up their software.

Many often cite Snow Leopard as being the heyday for Apple's "it just works" age, and I'm sure there's a similar reference for iOS. As Apple continues to strive to add more and more bells and whistles to their software, more and more bugs and inconsistencies are bound to come up.

As far as I know, this is somewhat inevitable with such a fast development cycle. I've heard people blame Apple's focus on pleasing shareholders first, and consumers second — drive more sales of the newest hardware models through software updates that require new purchases. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but you're here for a crazy and fun idea, not my ignorant speculation...

The idea.

Apple announces, in typical cryptic fashion, that the Apple polishing cloths will no longer be available until further notice.

Later, when it comes time for WWCD of that year, the theme is some clever variation on 'the year of polish' or 'our lineup has never been shinier' or something actually good.

The point.

Apple announces that the polishing cloths were no longer available to the public, as they were needed internally. They needed them so they could spend a full year focused on 'polishing' their existing offerings (not literally, of course; I'm talking software).

They announce the name of the new update to macOS as [clever name], and a video plays with a reel like: (with accompanying iOS and iPadOS versions)
  • New features: none!
  • Added functionality: none!
  • Pretty novelties: none!
    ...
  • Bugs fixed: 23,434,543
  • Consistency improved: 3,567,343 instances
  • Energy efficiency: up 363%
  • Crash decrease: 476%
  • User satisfaction: +254%
  • etc... (any metrics which can actually measure these improvements)

The message.

They talk about taking everything they already have, but has objectively needed more time to polish and refine, and then re-offering it in an update which re-commits to the principles of quality over quantity, reliability, and "it just works".

They talk about longer lasting hardware (due to more efficient and optimized software), in order to help with e-waste.

They talk about staying true to the principles which made them the most valuable company in the world.

They talk about defining their software in the same way they have done with their hardware: polished and refined to a level unmatched in the industry.

Then, at the end, they show a room full of Apple employees polishing MacBooks, iPhones, watches, and iPads. All getting shinier and shinier...

"The polishing cloths will be available again on [DATE]." <– the release date for the 'new' OS.

Shareholder relations.

There would need to be a separate, specific, presentation directed at shareholders, so they don't think Apple has gotten lazy and will lose sales.

This would be a long-term gain to offset the downturn in hardware sales, and to get fans to fall in love with their products again. If they pulled this off, then it would, hopefully, pull more and more people into the Apple ecosystem due to it's ease of use, consistency, and reliability — all things which used to be associated with Apple far more frequently.

Not gonna happen.

I know. I just thought it would be fun to write out and discuss.
If you don't send Apple your ideas, they will never happen. Bigger chance they read and discuss it when you send it to them, than the tiny chance one of them reads it on this forum.

A music app that understands just because I have a toddler, I don’t want Gabby's Dollhouse music mixed into my feed all the time.
See this is the simple stuff that Apple ignores, but now Apple is brainwashing use to think that Apple Intelligence will fix decades of neglect to common sense. Big fail Apple. Get the simple stuff done before AI.

Fix the reminders app. It has been broken since iOS 7. It takes so long to open, the lag is insane. I get the newest iPhone every year and have uninstalled and reinstalled clean iOS every time but the reminders app is always incredibly lagging.

Yes! Private sessions in Music, Spotify has had this for years!

Other things Music is badly missing

  • Ability to pin and album, artist, playlist in a list view
  • ability to remove and album or track from the library and not have it automatically removed from any of your own playlists. The current UX here is straight out of 2006.
  • Handoff/ability to control playback between devices. Spotify can do this between an iPhone and a browser running on a PC, Apple can't do this between an iPhone and a Mac!
  • A much better Mac app, the current one is an embarrassment
  • Quicker and more reliable sync between mobile and desktop.
  • Much much better search.
  • A more granular approach to what is shown in your 'Home' feed. It's nice that I can see Replay in the feed all year round but can I not choose to not have it there? Maybe I don't want Apple Replay from 2021 there all the time!
  • Sleep timer.

I believe the shareholder response would again mimic that of the polishing cloth: “wow, that was one expensive polishing cloth.”

Seriously though, does Apple actually need to halt features for a full release cycle in order to fix bugs?
Yes, Yes they do.

At the risk of everyone hating me: new UI. iOS feels stale and long in the tooth at this point. I am a senior ios engineer so I will hate having to update everything but how the UI looks significantly changes how we feel.
Well iOS is old and decrepit, so it should look that way until they fix a larger part of the bugs.

If they announced iOS 19 with a single feature: getting rid of the period next to the spacebar when searching for stuff in Safari, I would be happy with the release.

Dual boot mode, iOS/ macOS
Multi user login
Local iCloud backups
Different password for Apple pay
More than two zoom modes
Ability to download/install apps from computer
Android app sandbox
Thunderbolt sync speeds
Hover over icons mode
Siri conversational mode
Rename Hey Siri
Rapid radio mode or phone to phone mode without cell tower
Satellite calling
Return of Touch ID on device
Customize top of device icons
Better virtual home button that’s fixed locked position not overlaid on keyboard
Morse/Chord look free keyboard input

#1 on my list is for them to fix the forever bug where the "Private Wi-Fi Address" option switches from OFF to FIXED for no apparent reason. This issue or one like it has been happening for me on all of my iPhone and iPad devices ever since the "Private Wi-Fi Address" option was added, years ago. It's annoying as Hell.

usable spell checker , ....
This really gets me. Apple is focused on AI and yet cannot even get Siri or spellchecker to work correctly. I think Apple has really lost the boat. If Apple just kills off a dozen of their crappy Apps and focused on the OS maybe the users would get better functionality and usability.

Apple has forgotten that every time you create a new App you should have dedicated a team and the cost for that team for the life of the App. Apple seems to think that after the Keynote the App does not need anything until the round of functionality improvements.

This would be nice and acceptable if Apple had a good software development process. However Apple makes the software development decisions, what they receive is bottom barrel, bug ridden, bad usability, POLA violations and lacking expected user functionality. Then Apple abandons the App for a couple of years in favor of the next Keynote announcement App.

That's odd it's slow for you. I've never noticed any lag in it in the 10+ years I've used it.

Not sure if this was said already, but it would be nice if they could put Safari in dark mode. I know there’s NOIR and a couple of other apps, but I get a lot of errors with these. If you implemented Dark Mode pretty much everywhere else, why wasn’t Safari on the list? 🤔
My safari is in dark mode. Even the MacRumors website. Check your settings!

I want screen time to function propely. Update according to usage, no false loggin of activities. Add convenience to manage screen time. Add new features to easier access and automate screen time. I want to be able to control screen time from calendar, reduce connecticity 30 minutes prior to an activirty, and reactivate after an activity.
Amen

What's Rumored for iOS 19

iOS 19 is rumored to be getting a major design update with visuals inspired by visionOS. It could have a floating, glossy look with a focus on transparency, along with simplified navigation and a reimagining of icons, buttons, and menu bars.

More Apple Intelligence features are in the works, including the updates to Siri that we were supposed to get in iOS 18. We have a list of all the iOS 19 rumors so far in our iOS 19 roundup.

Article Link: What's On Your iOS 19 Wishlist?
Favicons in the Safari bookmark menu on iOS/iPadOS. Pretty simple I would think....

Translation of whatever is on the screen eg I live in Germany and my banking app only displays in German (no other option) . Would be great to have some way to view the UI in English.
