I'm confused....Have they already actually started some of the Olympic events? Here in the US we won't see the Opening Ceremony until tonight in Prime Time, and over the next couple weeks NBC will have summaries of everything in prime time each night.

The figure skating is definitely the sport in which I am most interested. Ilia Malinin, "the quadgod," is of course the one most of us in the US will be focused on, and in my area, he's a hometown boy! He lives in a suburb of Washington, DC, and trains at a local rink in the suburbs, and when he's not preparing for competitions, takes academic classes at the largest school in the suburbs, George Mason University.

There was a long and very interesting article in yesterday's paper about Alysa Liu and I am looking forward to seeing her skate. I am guessing that she won the gold in the Women's Team Skating? Great way to start off -- go, Team USA!

These are preliminary events I suppose that there are so many they wanted to get a head start. I am watching on the Swiss French public network NBC is reporting im the US. These young skaters from the US have a great attitude as well as talent taking Alyssa Liu as an example she took a break in 2022 and came back on her own terms.

So Alyssa got silver rather than gold? That's still OK, it's a medal for the US! The really important skating will come later and that is where everyone in the competition needs to shine and do their absolute best.

What is on my mind currently, is that in the last 6 years the world has just gone off the rails. I remember how things were in 2019 and in previous years. I dearly miss it.

I often feel the same way.

Although I also think things in those years before 2019 set tbe trajectory to the world of the 2020s. That is, even if we could go back to 2019, like rolling a computer back to a restore point, we'd probably have very much the same 2020s.

I think of what would have happened if the events of the 2020s never happened, like no Covid-19, etc, and things just kept rolling on the same path they were before then. I wonder who I would be, and how different I would have been.

It is raining, again... it has been raining on and off every day since November, roads are constantly flooded or have large puddles, and MANY new potholes are appearing as a result. Getting rather tired of the weather as is my dog. But we live in England so..... The only break we seemed to have was at Christmas. I think I would even prefer snow at this point! Where I live we haven't had a single snowflake yet.

I think Covid has very little effect on the world compared to more recent events that occurred. The planet has changed for the worse these last couple of years.
Tolerance is out. The common good is out. It makes me sad just to think about it.
But due to the political nature it’s better to just skip the subject altogether!

Ughh Lindsey Vonn just had a nasty fall and had to be evacuated by helicopter. Much as I like and respect her she should not have competed given her recent injury. Even Ilia Malinin was not up to his usual standard last night in the men's short part of the team program. On the positive side, the Swiss Franjo von Allmen got gold in downhill skiing. In women's ice hockey women's so far., Canada wiped Switzerland and the USA beat Finland. Men's hockey will start this week too.

Oh, dear! I remember thinking when I was reading some of the articles leading up to the Olympics that Lindsey Vonn was sure taking some serious risks and I was surprised that she was allowed to compete. Like you, I don't think it was a wise choice on her part. Even if she had insisted someone in charge should've said a flat-out "no." I'm sorry to hear that she's been injured again.

Also that is not good news that Iilia Malinin was not up to his usual standard in the Men's short team event. Ouch! I hope he isn't getting too cocky about his career successes to date and thinking that he is invincible.... He's under a lot of pressure to meet up to the expectation that he will bring home at least one gold medal. Getting off to a rough start....

Women's free skate for the team event. Japan and the US are now in a tie thanks to Kaori's performance - she will be missed as this is her last Olympics. I liked Amber Glenn's performance though it was not quite up to her best level. Anastasia Gubanova did well for Georgia too. Maybe @Clix Pix we can take this to the Olympics thread? Milano-Cortina 2026 games

Car insurance and customer service are on my mind.
So I called to change the car on my wife's car insurance policy yesterday as we had just brought a new one. I wanted to just change the car, pay the extra and move on. We had 8 months of the 12 left we had paid for (£200) so I was expecting they would probably want to change another £100 or so. No problem. They wanted over £300 for the change (which was basically just 8 months insurance). I looked elsewhere and found it for £250 for 12 months so that seamed a no brainer.
When I called to cancel the policy I was told that I would be getting just £15 back (7.5% pf the original cost, having only been 4 months into the policy due to admin fees.
When I explained that was a complete rip off, the employee just laughed (very unprofessional). Anyway I will never use Zenith Car insurance.

Now if they had just made a reasonable charge I'd have paid it and probably just stuck with them in the future.

Just to keep in mind when you insure new car, the insurance will go up as a new vehicle is more costly to repair but more importantly to replace. So that might account for the premium increase. But nevertheless, they should just simply apply what was already prepaid for the current vehicle and apply it to the premium (likely higher) of the new vehicle.

They shouldn't charge an admin fee, especially if you've been a long time customer. If they still insist, I'd ask to speak with a supervisor or manager. I'd also mention the rude behavior of the first line representative.

I was expecting an increased premium. I think you’d be insane not to expect that. But they wanted to charge me more for 8 months insurance than 20 plus companies wanted to charge for 12 months. Significantly more. They also have charged me 90% of the years insurance for the 4 months we have had.

Not so insane as many people don't think about or realize that. But I'd still talk to someone in management about the situation that seems unreasonable as well as the poor customer service received.

Really? I can’t imagine anyone would expect to pay the same to insure a 4 year old car as a 14 year old one.
I’ve gone elsewhere now. Asking to speak to the manager is virtually worthless as they will just put you through to someone they sit next to.
I left feedback in the portal online but I’m not expecting anything to come from it.

I see that today is the Superbowl. I couldn't care less about it. I don't understand the appeal in watching a bunch of dudes throw around a ball. Whenever I hear people talk about it, it is like a foreign language to me. I never got it growing up, and I sure don't get it now.

I really don't know your vehicle details as you didn't mention them originally. It was an attempt to be helpful. Ignore if viewed as not so.

You hit the nail right on the head. I really don’t care about sports, either. I know some people think they’re a big deal and obsess over everything related, but I just think it’s a waste of time. It’s like television for me. TV shows are a waste of time, and so are sports (and therefore sports on TV, too).

Of course sports are a good conversation starter/something to talk about, but I just don’t get it, and I talk to people about other things.

My high school was a BIG sports school, in that nearly everyone was an athlete themselves, and they’d also obsess over the Super Bowl, etc. (I was also only one of two musicians there, but that’s another discussion.)

The vehicle details are sort of irrelevant.
If you drive a Ford and then buy a Ferrari you expect the insurance premium to go up. I wasn’t expecting anything other than that.

But if the existing company wants more money to change your car for the remaining 8 months of the policy than lots of other companies want for a FULL year that’s bonkers.

As is only refunding you 7.5% of your annual premium when you are not even halfway through the year.

I wasn’t really looking for advice. Just ranting about what was on my mind.

Just pointing out here in the northeast the temps have been quite low. My heat is on constantly and it fails to keep the house warm. So the heating bill is definitely on my mind and its going to be an expensive February.

And - I would add to that - the response of laughing derisively, and disrespectfully, which is both discourteous and utterly unprofessional.
