Whilst Mrs AFB prepares dinner I thought I’d jump on my MacBook Air to do a bit of work. Couldn’t access a shared drive. So restart has prompted a 28 minute upgrade.
I miss the good old Apple days when it just worked.

Does your MacBook have the new M1 processor in it? I have literally spent all afternoon deciding which MacBook to buy. I’ve decided on the 13” MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB Storage. This is complete overkill for me but I just think the extra RAM will provide some future proofing.

No this is an old 2017 model that has more issues than I care to remember. I have a new 13” MacBook Pro at work. Not M1 though. The last of the Intel. I’ll be collecting it this week if IT have finished setting it up.

Sometimes when we walk around the village you see beer cans and the like tossed in the hedge. Makes my blood boil.

I remember once as a child when we (brothers and self) were out with my father, and he made us drop whatever waste - sweet or crisp packets - we had into nearby dustbins.

On that walk, we had seen louts, those awful male teenagers you sometimes see - casually and arrogantly tossing their waste onto the path with a swagger and a sneer, daring anyone to remonstrate with them, but my father made clear to us that this was not how we were to behave, and that it didn't matter what others did, or how badly they misbehaved, they were not our role models, and, that if we had waste, it was destined for a dustbin.

Worse than those teenagers you see are parents with young kids who toss rubbish in the road as they push the pram along, teaching their kids the exact opposite of what our parents taught us.

Agree completely.

Very irresponsible as both people and as parents.

Had a most pleasant chat for around an hour and a half this afternoon with Decent Brother.

You can disable auto-updates under System Preferences -> Software Update. Not that it helps much now😊

😳 Genuinely surprised to hear about this behaviour in first world countries.

I, too, was taught from an early age to properly dispose of any trash or rubbish that I had, not just casually toss it any old place..... I get angry, too, when I see masks carelessly discarded on parking lot pavements, sidewalks, and caught in bushes (either because someone threw them there or because they were blown on to the bush by the wind because of having been tossed on the pavement).

Since the beginning of this thing I've been using disposable masks, but I definitely take care to discard them appropriately. If I'm at the store or the library, once I'm back in my car, I lower the mask and let it hang around my chin/neck until I'm home again, and first thing I do when walking into the house is to dispose of the mask in my waste bin. Second thing, of course, is to immediately wash my hands.

Reading this section of the thread - including my own memories - it is extraordinary the enduring effect that parents can have on kids, and how important it is to brig kids up well, with values, good habits, principles.

Again, as kids, my mother was adamant that we were never to associate - or link - going to the shop on a simple errand as an opportunity to purchase sweets (candies).

Sweets (candies) were a special treat, for birthdays, Christmas, certain celebrations. Crisps were allowed, on occasion.

Biscuits came with tea (or coffee - even as a child, I was the designated coffee maker, whenever we hd gets, probably because I liked coffee), but were rare otherwise served, unless occasionally, to Decent Brother after dessert.

Instead, we were offered fruit, fruit for dessert, fruit when we returned from home from a day when school had finished for the day and were feeling peckish, fruit for when we went on a walk. My mother loved fruit, and the upshot of that is that she raised three children who also love fruit, and rarely even think of sweets (or candies).

As kids were always had crisps and chocolate in the house. Probably one of the reasons I was a fat child! My Mum has been obese most of her life. My Dad used to eat jam sandwiches at work (6 slices) and a Mars bar. But he had a very physical job then and played football so was never fat.
I’ve never been much of a fruit lover. I love vegetables but would rather have a raw carrot than an apple etc.

I grew up very poor and it showed. While I was extremely skinny, my diet was filled with junk. As I grow older, my desperation for healthier food increases. It's a shame that fruits and vegetables do not stay good long. So buying in bulk is not a viable option (especially when compared with processed foods).

I need to budget better so I can get away from bagged ramen. Especially since I can't be as active as I once was. The effects of bad nutrition are increasing.

Sheesh, and none of you guys are anywhere near the 70's yet!!!! Actually, for me what has been most bothersome is my eyes aging...... Since I really rely on them, having my visual acuity changing over the years has been very disturbing. To me, since I am already hearing-impaired, losing my vision altogether would be a real nightmare.

The hearing impairment thing is something I've had since birth so it's not a big deal to me and actually I find it rather advantageous at times when living in a multifamily (condominium) dwelling, the way that I have been for over 25 years and still am currently doing. Unless the guy who lives above me were to stomp violently on the floor or drop something heavy that makes a loud sound, I am pretty oblivious to a lot of the everyday sounds since I often go around home without bothering to use my hearing aids. His dog barks, no problem (I do hear it when I'm wearing my aids, of course).

I'm much more sensitive to odors and am not appreciative when I smell cigarette smoke from another unit or some weird concoction (what IS that smell? It's not pleasant!) Most mealtime scents are rather aromatic and one wonders, wow, what are they going to be enjoying, as it smells great! One scent I absolutely detest is dryer sheets or other products of that ilk, which usually is sickly-sweet and pollutes the air everywhere when someone does a load or two of laundry and puts their clothing into the dryer with these products...... Why would anyone want their clothes to smell like that???!!!!

Back to the aging thing: when I was in my forties I sustained a herniated lumbar spine disc and had surgery for that, but still have residual reminders from that, which have shown up more and more frequently as I continue to age. Nerve damage which was done at the time of that initial occurrence never was able to fully recover, so there's the occasional twinge and reminder of that horrible sciatic pain or the more-and-more frequent realization of numbness in some of the toes of the left foot. At least right now this doesn't interfere with walking or other activities in any way, thankfully. Occasionally I do have cramping in the night or early morning, which IS uncomfortable, of course, but again is quickly resolved.

No problem here with knees, never have experienced that. Probably because I've never been overweight and also have never participated in the kinds of physical activities which really do take a toll on knees. I do occasionally get pain in my left ankle, which had sustained several serious sprains throughout my life and which my doctor explained now has arthritis. OK, I can deal with that.....

So you guys who are still in your 40's and already experiencing issues with your health and well-being.....there's worse ahead if you're not mindful of taking care of yourself now, and even if you ARE mindful, the aging process is still going to catch up with you anyway as you enter the era of your 50s and the 60s....but most notably, it seems to be the 70s when everything really does seem to happen and remind you of your actual age....

As a newbie 70-year-old, I feel very fortunate that I have good health with all the nonsense I have been involved in. As a competitive runner since the age of 13, no disabling injuries and still run an 18-mile run once a week. I owe this to good genes, luck, and maintaining a good physical exercise program including stretching, which is important for all people even if you are not inclined to do sporting activities.

I’m more active now than I’ve ever been. Exercising daily. But I can’t run with my knees. High impact. But if you’ve been doing it all your life I guess it’s different.
Any news on that potential trip overseas?

I’m of the opinion I don’t care whether anybody else takes the vaccine as long as myself and my loved ones do. It’s been a crap year and it’s only getting worse where I live at the moment in terms of COVID. We have one of the highest infection rates in the country and my daughters school has had to close 3 weeks early due to 23 positive cases in the school. Totally fed up and can’t wait for this all to be over.
You sounded like you’re contradicting yourself here. We need everybody healthy.

Any one else bothered that all digital media has only 3 outlets? iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon Prime.
Not sure what you're considering as "digital media", but streaming movie purchases are also available through Vudu (and if it's any streaming digital content [i.e., "un-owned"], then there's Pandora, Spotify for Music/Podcasts, there's Netflix/Hulu/D+/etc., for TV,movies, etc.)

You have to keep in mind, the infrastructure requirements for storing and streaming HD/4K content is __massive__, what other companies have deep enough pockets to support this? Who else should be offering this? Target? Best Buy? I mean, the latter do offer "digital media" if you include optical media (which is of course, also digital), so if you're concerned with ownership or supporting smaller retailers, then just buy physical copies :)

There is a lot of option for streaming, as it appears a lot of countries/regions have their own service too but buying outright with the massive library is only available in the big 3. I think Vudu is US only.

Are we really not going to talk about how Apple has a connector called "Lightning", that AFAIK has no official "logo" or "symbol", and that Apple also co-developed a protocol called "Thunderbolt", which has a logo/symbol, and that symbol is a lightning bolt.

I'm not sure what's more infuriating: that, or people mis-spelling lightning, with an 'e'.
