Inexplicably, I had run out of coffee by yesterday, and so was counting the hours (minutes) until the welcome arrival of my order of coffee.
while making coffee earlier today I looked at my current coffee supply, frowned, and wondered if it would last until next Tuesday when my current order is supposed to arrived

Sigh.

I know the feeling.

As it happens, I don't aways manage the calculation - when it comes close to the end of my coffee - entirely successfully.
I always try to keep ahead, so when I open a new bag I make a note on my shopping list right then and there so that the next time I am shopping, either in a store or thinking about placing an online order, coffee will be included......

I often - even, usually - get it right, but, not always.

I’m enjoying Taskmaster NZ’s first season a lot more than the current season of the original UK Taskmaster.

I ordered when the supply reached the usual trigger for a new order.....but the shipping time is 2 days longer than usual......ACK!

Today's calculation suggests there will be coffee for Tuesday morning but whether there will be any left for the afternoon is uncertain.

Could be worse. Post Brexit it will be like a plague of locusts have been through here.

Yes, I think an extra day (if not several days) may need to be added to one's mind, mentally, when ordering goods, in the future.

I think it will be worse and I happen to agree with you.

We’re already seeing delays due to port congestion. I have goods that were due to arrive next week. But the container can’t dock until 22nd. Not great as the goods were ordered in March but delayed due to COVID. The company that makes the product for us was first closed, then spent a few months making PPE.
Bags packed for tomorrow morning’s trip. Hope to be on the road before 6.

The do; make mistakes; learn; improve cycle with physical tasks like e.g. basic woodworking (I do mean basic, like building a bench, not like carpentry or what have you) feels very quick, compared to the time it takes to improve skills as a software developer.

Maybe because mistakes are more obvious to look at, and (generally) require more (physical) work to fix...

Yes.

Sigh.

Grim stuff, to put it mildly, but entirely predictable, unfortunately.

Indeed.
Cold here. Just been outside to lock up the garage. Hopefully dinner will warm me up.
Chicken breast with pasta and vegetables.

Cold here, too.

Just trotted down to the local shop, (before heading out, trying to remember, wallet, hat, winter coat, lanyards - to keep glasses in place when masked - mask...) to pick up the week-end FT they keep for me every Saturday.

Reading it now - depressing stuff, needless to say - with coffee.

Probably not as depressing as it will be in a few weeks. Looking forward to spring. These cold dark days are no fun.

Been posting less frequently for several reasons, not going to go into all of them but suffice it to say this will be my third Xmas here without family. Last time in Canada was in 2017 when my father passed away. Wheil 2018 and 2019 were ok especially as Geneva had begun a Xmas market which is cancelled this year. They do make an effort with the lights but still not even sure I want to listen to Xmas music. Sorry to rant. Now to go off continue my watch Godless, Queen's Gambit and the 2nd episode of the final season of Shengeki no kyojin (Attack on Titan).

Sorry to hear that. We don’t celebrate (or even acknowledge) Christmas in any way since we lost our daughter. The 2-3 cards we get sent every year go straight in the bin. Roll on January is pretty much how I feel about December.

My sympathies; even without the isolation and sensory deprivation of the (necessary) conditions engendered by Covid-19, Christmas can be a tough time, and has never been a time of year that met with my approval.

The fact my mother died just before Christmas two years ago makes the experience of this time of year even more intensely bitter-sweet.

I just caught (and killed) another poisonous snake. This one was just outside the front door, under the carport.

So, obvious choice, we'll get some of those ultrasonic pest deterrents right? Oh. Every model we can find, is solar powered. I mean really? It's very rare that I find a pest I would want to deter in bright ****ing daylight.

So, at this rate it seems like we'll be buying the solar ones, and I'll be butchering them to run from a DC transformer connected to the mains. Yay for DIY I guess?

Some things with a solar cell also contain a battery. The solar cell charges the battery, and the device then runs from the battery. Worst case would be a string of very cloudy days, with insufficient sun to put a net charge on the battery.

Just because a device has a solar cell doesn't necessarily mean it's designed so that it only operates in daylight. It depends on the device. An example of something that usually runs all the time is a home weather station, or just the outdoor sensors for a home weather station.

Without knowing the specific device, I don't know any way to determine how long a pest deterrent might operate from solar power.

On a completely separate question, I wouldn't necessarily bet that ultrasonic emitters will keep snakes away. Ultrasonics are usually intended for small mammals, such as roof rats, gophers, rabbits, etc. Unless the device specifically says it repels snakes, I wouldn't assume it does.

People who are still on iOS 11, need software that only runs on iOS 12, and we're at iOS 14.

How am I supposed to be okay telling that person to update? 😩
That’s nothing. We used to sell some software. For several thousand pounds. The developer was terribly slow. We used to keep old macs to supply with it as it wouldn’t run on anything newer than Snow Leopard. I’m only talking 2 years ago.

I miss my M1 MBA. Had to return mine due to crazy memory pressure, beach balls and wonky battery life. 🥺 Settled on an Intel 2020 MBP for more RAM because I needed a Mac immediately, couldn’t wait 6 weeks for another top spec MBA so...😢 So the MBP is a stopgap machine for me. Grateful to have a Mac right now...

I can definitely see myself buying another M chip MBA, that was the only laptop I’ve truly enjoyed using and the wedge design is great for typing. The Magic Keyboard feels so good on the MBA. 😏

You’ve misunderstood the situation. I’m not concerned about clouds. The places I want to put them are in almost perpetual shade, from a combination of trees, a two storey house, and 8x9m (26x29 ft) carport.

Unless the device specifically says it repels snakes, I wouldn't assume it does.
But you would assume someone trying to deter a very specific kind of pest hasn’t thought to check that the deterrent is intended for that type of pest?

We had mice in our loft. Rather than try these repellent sonic things, I got a man in. £95. All good so far. Filled the gaps with wire wool and sealant. Put in traps. Took the bodies away. Not heard anything from them since.
I also took care of the Ivory.
