Enjoy the cannoli. Fresh French bread is delicious. Can’t remember the last time I had some. Was it still warm when you collected it?
No.

But, it was fresh, if not warm.

I headed in around lunch time, whereas the (lovely, fresh, French) bread had been put aside for me this morning (I had phoned them yesterday to request them to keep some bread for me).

For it to have been warm, I would have needed to have been at the shop by 8 a.m. when it opens.
I gained about 10lbs just by reading this post about all that delicious food!

And another (virtual) weight gain now awaits you, for, herewith, a description of my cheese purchases this afternoon - and - mirabile dictu - I had the cheesemonger's store to myself:

Anyway, today's purchases - heavily leaning to France, the Basque region, and Italy, included: The wonderful washed rind (aromatic, but not at this time of year), Époisses, and also some ripe, gloriously soft St Nectaire; a lovely cheese from Savoie, named Abondance; two Basque cheeses - the superb Ossau-Iraty, and the smoked Idiazabal; then, for breakfast decadence, some Delice de Bourgogne, followed by three blues, Gorgonzola Cremoso from Italy, along with two from France, the immortal Roquefort, and a slice of Bleu d'Auvergne.

I swear we need a lip smacking reaction emoji. Excellent selection. I had some Gruyere and will crack open a brown Leffe Belgian beer now.

Gruyere and brown Leffe should go very well together.

Do enjoy.

Have you ever had the pleasure of sampling or savouring Etivaz, which, my mind, is (far) better than both (or either) Emmenthal and Gruyere?

Yes I have and I agree with your judgment. It is harder too find, especially in the supermarkets than the other two - there are two more upscale supermarkets in Geneva where you can find it and the open air food market cheesemongers are usually a good bet to find it.

My cheesemonger usually only stocks it once a year - the season before Christmas. Agree that it is - or, can be - hard to obtain, especially in our Isles.

Unfortunately, as it lacks the "brand" names of Emmenthal and Gruyere, it is not as well known, and people don't seem to know it, which means that demand is not as strong as for the other, better-known Alpine style (cave) cheeses; however, to my mind, it is far superior to either of the others.

Actually, had it been in stock, - it wasn't, alas - I would have bought some today, in addition to the selection that I did treat myself to.

Debated heading into the farmer's market today - but, as the weather was vile, foul, filthy, wet, - and I had been in the city yesterday, my first such trip since before Christmas - I decided to forego the pleasure of (free range, organic) eggs and fresh fruit and organic vegetables until next week.

But, on the plus side, to be positive, a small crate of beer has just been delivered, and a fresh delivery of coffee (two new coffees, one from Ecuador, and the other from Rwanda) arrived yesterday, which was just as well, for I finished my coffee from El Salvador this morning.

Agree it’s vile out there. But in waterproofs I got a hole dug for one of our large Acers and went for a three mile walk.

It's still pretty cold out there today but at least we have sunshine and that should help eventually finish melting the rest of the leftover snow.....and then we'll have a few days' break before there might be another round of snow. Brrrr!!!

What's on my mind is dreaming of warm, pleasant days where I can have the windows open and sit out on my deck again.....and go walking around the boardwalk with the camera in hand.....and when everything is green and flowers are popping up everywhere......

Won’t be long.

Dinner is on my table!
Dinner also materialised at my table, and I must say that it was delicious.

Dinner: Poached fish (monkfish) in an oriental inspired broth (stock, fish sauce, Soya sauce, Oyster sauce, lemon grass, lime leaves, ginger, chopped chilli, a little sambal) with added vegetables (roughly chopped onions, carrots, tomatoes, Chinese cabbage, French onions), served with basmati rice.

Washing up done.

My washing up is still awaiting my attention.

I'm back down to under 120lbs/54kg weight due to all this stress lately. I know so many people who stress eat but I lose my appetite all together. Stress also increases my physical pain, so eating makes that pain increase for no good reason too. I'm back in this cycle after finally gaining a little back.

I haven't been visiting these forums as much because I know I'm just complaining and people don't need to keep reading all that negativity.

Rubbish. Complain away. If we can’t be here for people who are struggling, what sort of community are we? I got a lot of support on here when I was dealing with some major stress in my life.
I’m much more of a comfort eater than a meal skipper. But I’m still being good as I’m exercising more at the moment. Tomorrow I’m off to London so will have my first Beer of 2021 tomorrow night.

The problem with pain/stress is that pain causes stress, and stress can make pain more painful, so you just end up in a positive feedback loop. Somehow you need to find a way to break that loop.
In my case the stress was caused by a crappy job situation and the pain was caused by a prolapsed disc (aka 'slipped disc'). For me, 5 days on the lowest dosage of Valium (this was a long time ago) was able to break the cycle in my brain and I was able to think of a way to solve the job problem. This took the stress off the back pain and reduced it (I still have it, but only rarely and I hit it over the head with anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen)).

I can't advise you on what sort of solution would work for you, for that you need professionals.

However, I was watching the new 'Walker' last night, and his solution to stress was to stick his face in a sink full of water. Now this is a real physiological thing that I and my fellow students did at University. If you put your face in water, your heart rate slows down, sometimes to about half (for me it went from 90 bpm to about 60, some of my colleagues got down to about 30 bpm).

Not sayin' you should go around with a bucket of water, but there are all sorts of different solutions for all of us.

I hope you find some relief in one way or another soon!

Personally, I find it irritating in this particular thread -- "What's On Your Mind?" -- when people go on and on about what they're preparing for their meal, providing the recipe, then add more posts about what they ate, blah, blah, blah..... And, yes, I know that this is my particular issue, not necessarily others', but just thought I'd mention it since, well, this IS the "what is on my mind" section and right now that's on my mind!

There are other places within MR to discuss one's food and recipes to one's heart's content.... Surely when participating in this particular thread people have more on their mind than what they're going to prepare or have and consume for a particular meal?

Enjoy that well deserved beer! You've been working hard. I'll get my exercise in tomorrow as I haven't cleaned in two weeks due to the crazy weather.

I know people would give support but I also know that many are going through tough times as well, so I am just trying to not darken this place too much.

Kids go back to school today and it’s a real juggle. My mother and father in law have only just had their first vaccination and have been advised not to have contact with our children for 3 weeks. My wife and I have decided to do the school runs for the next few weeks instead. I am doing it today and tomorrow. The annoying thing is my youngest daughters class goes in at 8.50am and the oldest at 9.20am. That means we’ve got to stand in the rain and wait in an empty playground. I contacted the school and asked if she could go into her classroom and wait but the school have said no.

I have to collect the youngest at 11.30am and the oldest at 3pm, so it’s a day of fitting all that around meetings and other work argghhh

I’ve been walking for exercise and always wondering when all this darn snow will finally melt, I hate Lake Affect snow!

Walking has been my favorite way of excercising lately as well, but that's pretty difficult at the moment. Yesterday we had about +5C, so all the roads were obviously wet on account of the melting snow and some light drizzle. Last night the temperature dropped to about -5C (we're now at -10C), so now it's all just ice, everywhere. I really should start studying the way penguins move, otherwise I'll have to find my skates if I want to go anywhere outside of my apartment.
