Walking has been my favorite way of excercising lately as well, but that's pretty difficult at the moment. Yesterday we had about +5C, so all the roads were obviously wet on account of the melting snow and some light drizzle. Last night the temperature dropped to about -5C (we're now at -10C), so now it's all just ice, everywhere. I really should start studying the way penguins move, otherwise I'll have to find my skates if I want to go anywhere outside of my apartment.
Here in northern New England where it's 17F today and blowing snow sideways, we rely heavily on removable shoe/boot grippers to walk (and even run) on the snow and ice. Are those available there?

We actually call it "penguin walking" here too, a method to safely get across an icy patch.

We're so sick of winter by now though that even when it's this cold, I'll open the windows just to hear some birds. Come on, spring, we're ready.

Yeah, they are! My parents use those, since if they were to fall over it would be a whole lot more serious than if I happen to fall on my ass every now and again. But no, I haven't gotten myself a pair yet. This being the first winter in many years that all of this nonsense is an actual problem, I just haven't seen the need.

And mark my words, if it were to happen that I do buy a pair of those grippers, the second I walk out of the store that will be the beginning of a particularly sunny and warm spring, and this will have been the last real winter in another ten years.

I got thinking after I posted that it was probably the Finns who invented crampons, but turns out it was an Englishman, Oscar Eckenstein, in 1908.

Given the way things have been of late in the U.K., I’d not be surprised if an Englishman invented waders.

Consider getting a treadmill. That way, you could continue your walking without risk of freezing and injury from falling on ice.

No place for one of those in my apartment, and the only time I ever tried one we didn't exactly get along. Let's just say there's a smaller chance of me breaking bones tap-dancing along icy roads than if I tried to use a treadmill...

No need: skip rope. Will burn so many calories it’s not even funny. Cost: $5.
Ha, I remember when I was maybe ten years old and had a birthday party I had invited friends and class mates to. One of them brought me a skip rope. As a present. For my birthday. At ten years old. A skip rope of all things. He's a physical therapist now, so it all kind of makes sense, but back then it sure didn't.

Now, close to thirty years later I see the present for the useful, and sometimes even fun thing it is, but boy oh boy was I an annoyed kid when I unwrapped it back then. I've almost forgiven the dude (we're still friends), and remember to always bring that day up to him when we meet. I've managed to guilt some beers from him along the years, so it's not all bad.

I want a new replacement for this T-shirt! In the realm of T shirt color, khaki is one of my favorites plus I love this icon. I wonder if I reproduce the icon, how much it would be to get a shirt made? Probably too much.

How neighbors and tenants pot smoking is hurting my relations with mom.

There’s a lot more to it, but we’re at the breaking point.
I loathe pot, (actually, I am so uncool, I am violently allergic to it).

Best of luck re your relationship with your mom.

Such stuff is not at all easy in these Covid times, especially when the impact of external sources of stress on your life can be magnified.

Same as you with the pot. The family on the first floor here* are now smoking too. Waiting for the landlord to call us back and deal with this since the first floor crew are now chummy with pothead basement tenant and no longer complain. Funny, they complained about basement pothead for over a year, but last summer they flipped a switch.

It’s coming into my room 2-3x a day now, which makes me very allergic and instantly angry.

*I’ve never liked it here. This last year has only intensified that.

Kazmac, sounds to me as though it's time for you (and your mother if you are intending to keep sharing a household) to move, although of course that is a real hassle and an expense that probably you don't want to incur if it can be avoided. Seems as though the landlord should be doing something about this situation, both with the tenant in the basement and the tenants on the first floor as well..... Regular cigarette smoke is one thing and a nuisance in and of itself, but Pot is something else again.....

The tenant in the condo unit beneath mine is a smoker and although in the lease it was specifically stated that there was to be no smoking in the unit, he has definitely been doing so, and since the landlord and I are friends, I've let her know about the situation. About two years ago she completely renovated the unit and has all nice new stuff in there and definitely did not want anyone smoking in there. The last tenant was fine about that, he always smoked outdoors, either on the deck or somewhere else; this guy who has been in there since I think July or August isn't as conscientious and, yeah, I am treated to the smoky odor in my own unit as well, especially now during wintertime when it's cold outside and he's smoking inside and of course all windows are closed, etc. Comes right through the vents.... GRRRR!!!! I had the impression a couple of months ago that she was going to nail him on that and cancel the lease agreement, but he's still in there so I'm not sure what's happening. She did recently ask in a text if he were still smoking in there, which I confirmed -- I smell it just about each and every time. Sigh.....

It's raining.
Cat (see left <--) is under the bed.
