Ok, I had my second Covid shot yesterday.
First one, no side effects apart from sitting down in a chair to read, dropping off and waking up an hour later.
This time --
  • Sore arm - no biggie, pretty normal reaction to somebody sticking something pointy in your arm
  • Soreness in my legs - unusual
  • Feeling deeply cold all over, in spite of sitting on a heater (not really, but it's nearby)
  • Extreme fatigue - going back to bed

Good luck!!

Hang in there. My first was terrible. The second was no effect. Everyone is different

Still better than Covid.

Thank you all for your good wishes. A few hours of good sleep, and I'm feeling fine, now.

And now for something completely different.
We just watched a documentary called "Outlier: The story of Katherine Johnson". If you have seen "Hidden Figures" you will know who I mean. If you haven't, stop reading and go see that film. Or read the book. Or both.
Anyway, a crucial part of the film is where they are trying to work out how to get a capsule in orbit back to earth. They have to convert the elliptical orbit to a parabolic path. How this is done was written up in NASA Technical Note D-233, co-authored by T.H.Skopinski and Katherine G. Johnson.
It can be found here

There are some documents that are essential to world history. Watson & Crick's DNA paper in Nature was one of them. Skopinski & Johnson's paper is another, because without it, nobody would be coming back from orbit.

That (feeling extremely cold, utter fatigue, and a little soreness in my arm) were my reactions to my first shot.

The very best of luck with it.

Just completed the 2021 Australian National Census.
Took me 22 minutes.
Lots of questions NOT asked, like how much public transport is available/used, nothing about broadband/internet use, etc.
I was impressed in that I filled it out at peak time (8 PM) and the system coped without a blink. The gummint is finally getting its IT house in order.

Controversial gender question -
Are you
  • Male
  • Female
  • Non-binary other
This excludes all the transgender, bisexual, asexual and other people who don't fit into one of the supplied boxes.

Also, for a country that has a large, recent, non-English speaking origin migrant community, the form was only available in English. The little letter you got telling you how and when to fill out the form was in multiple languages, but the form itself? English only.

I assume that the census questionnaire goes to citizens only, right? I also assume that in order to get citizenship an immigrant would have to prove proficiency in the mother tongue of the place.

No, it goes to all residents. A functional census counts all persons within the borders of a nation at a particular time.

And no, you don't have to prove proficiency in the mother tongue, which is a good thing, given what some native-born 'Stryians do to it...

yeah you're right. For some reason I was thinking of voter registration lists.

Interesting that no proficiency of a language is required. Now, here in the US the "English language test" is a joke, but it exists at least as a formality.

No chance. The jails should be full of anyone who takes a selfie.
Exactly! The other day was premiere night for my kid’s school band. I noticed
1) way too many people taking vertical videos.
2) some people are just rude and talk, loudly, during the performance. Not one word like “wow” or “nice” but actual conversations.

From what I recall we weren’t allowed to take videos when my daughter was at school. Sad really. It would have been nice to have some things to remember her by.

My understanding is that it depends on the performance and if they’re recording it. At times we are not allowed either, other times we are. It truly depends. Another factor might be the age of the performers, my kid is 15 now. I remember that in elementary school the rules were stricter, probably because if I am filming him, I am also filming the other pre-teen kids which could be problematic.

Yes I think it was because of the other kids and in junior school (pre teen). By the time she was at secondary school she was not involved in anything like performances as she was diagnosed by then.

The battle of Cannae (216 BC), as I am reading a book that talks about it. More than 50,000 (possibly 80,000) deaths in just a handful of hours, on a 2sq miles area. Must’ve been an unbelievable event to see; according to the book, many injured soldiers begged to be killed on the field, and when the request was not granted they suffocated themselves by scraping small holes in the ground to bury their heads.
What a carnage.

What I want to do now, I left my job because I wasn’t doing much(I was on YouTube more than actually programming) and now don’t know if I want to do web dev work, devops or go into cyber security.
