What I want to do now, I left my job because I wasn’t doing much(I was on YouTube more than actually programming) and now don’t know if I want to do web dev work, devops or go into cyber security.
One thought to help decide is if you were offered an opportunity to do all three on a volunteer basis (let's say for a cause or organization whose mission you believe in), which one would you pick?

I wasn't suggesting you should actually volunteer. It was simply a thought exercise that might help you decide, i.e., if salary and benefits weren't in the mix, which would you feel most excited to do. Before I settled on my current occupation, I had a similar dilemma and this was one idea that helped. Obviously it doesn't work in all situations for everyone.

I have been thinking about my Afghan friends and what will happen, this article is timely.

Good article.
Hopefully the mods will show some grace since this event is way too big to ignore; I just hope that the Taliban learned that causing too many problems is counterproductive. I hope that they too are sick of 20 years of war. I hope that even if they are not as “open” as other democracies they might still be different than the pre-War Taliban. Good luck Afghanistan, I hope to see you as a good player in the international arena.

I love computers, by which I mean I keep on underestimating the interesting* touches that AI brings.

I was running a spell-checker on a document. Now spell-checkers have a simple version of AI that suggests a range of alternatives to a word it thinks is misspelled.

It came across the word "TeXLive", which is a document processing system which produces documents that are typeset with the quality of a skilled printer. It is, however, extremely full-featured, with thousands of features, and is, at times, extremely pig-headed about the way it wants to do things.

It may be, then, that 'expletive' is not an inappropriate suggestion.

* Interesting in the sense of the apocryphal Chinese curse "May you have an interesting life", i.e. full of wars, famines, plagues and the like...

Looking forward to the Elizabeth Holmes (founder of Theranos) trial, for charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, with opening arguments scheduled on Sept. 8. I wonder if there will be revealed details more shocking than in Bad Blood. Hopefully the lab chief will be able to testify.

One of my biggest "corporate lore" regrets was believing in this lady. I remember reading articles about her, and watching interviews. I was fascinated by her innovative ideas. Then the fraud came to light. I hope she gets what she deserves. I still haven't seen Bad Blood because I think it will... make my blood boil.

Bad Blood is actually the book by Jon Carreyrou, a Wall Street Journal reporter. Apparently there's a documentary called The Inventory: Out for Blood, but I haven't seen it.

That is good news! The other day in The Washington Post there was an article and photo of Afghanistan refugees who were temporarily stopping in Northern Virginia (I think they were flown in to Dulles International Airport, which is in Northern Virginia and close to where they were being provided temporary shelter). I didn't read the article closely but I had the impression that this was a brief stop enroute to a more settled, permanent location for them. Many people in this area donated clothing/blankets/food/water, etc., to help them while they were/are here.

Two of the countries in Africa I worked in have agreed to take in Aghanistan refugees/translators; Uganda and Rwanda if they want too. Now to get Kenya on board.
And to get them out in the first place of course! Hope there is an extension. Troubling times. Makes you glad we live in a safer part of the world.

Afghanistan is again on my mind. And US Marines are on my mind.
Afghanistan is very much on my mind, too.

As are US service personnel in Kabul airport, a place I know very well.
Absolutely. And British service men and women. A horrible situation.

British service men and women, diplomats, and Afghans who are desperate to leave.

On a happier note, I convinced my organization to buy me an automatic standing desk. So far it has been life changing. I now stay in standing position about half of my day, and my lower back pain has reduced already. I also noticed that I stay less in a hunched position when I am working on the computer.
