Lately I have been avoiding sodas and any other overly-artificial food items like the plague. I have to say, it makes a wild difference. Much less cravings, I feel more energetic, I lost some weight.
I now mainly drink: coffee in the AM (black, no sugar), lots and lots and lots of water in the PM and at night, and a glass of red wine at dinner.

Gave up soft drinks 20 years ago. After about a month or two, you'll notice less need for the sweetness and sugar in your drinks. I lost the sweet tooth so to speak. Now when I drink one on a rare occasion, I marvel that people could ever really enjoy them. It's like drinking candy. Anyway, like you, I mainly drink water and coffee (with milk or black). I'm probably a much healthier person today just by making that one change to my diet.

I drink tea from the moment I get up, until I go to bed.
Diet Coke at lunchtime. That’s it.
I’m winter a hot chocolate on occasion.
Beer just when I socialise (so about 2-3 times a year).

I rarely drink soft drinks -- can't even remember the last time I had one! My beverages of choice: coffee (black), iced tea (not as fond of hot tea, though), orange juice or tangerine juice first thing in the morning when I arise, and, oh, yes, beer.....a beverage I enjoy later in the day. Nothing like a nice cold beer on a hot afternoon! I also drink plenty of water, too, to keep hydrated, especially in the summertime.

ETA: I can't believe I forgot to add in wine as another beverage I enjoy upon occasion -- beer is really my (alcoholic) drink of choice but I do appreciate a nice wine, too! White wine more than Red wine, but that is because I tend to eat more seafood and fish and such than I do red meats and so the White wine is just the thing......

I have never been a true fan of sweets or sodas, but I noticed that when I drink one I crave it more.

By the way, your signature is a nice spin.

Soooo glad it’s Friday night. Work done until Sunday. Of course I have different work to do tomorrow of Mrs AFB choosing! Trip to the tip and the supermarket first thing for example!
Mine will be "Soooo glad it's Saturday night and work done until Monday. Looking forward to Sunday off but like you, although not my Mrs, my girlfriend wants to go out somewhere, ("you choose" she says) and that it harder to decide than any work I do in the office!

Supermarket or the tip are pretty much the places Mrs AFB chooses to send me.

I have never been a soft drinks person.

Coffee (in the morning, an utter necessity, with milk for preference, without if necessary, but no sugar, ever, unless it is a very early morning espresso); all other coffees are a supplementary treat, - very pleasant, - especially in company - but not required - but that first one is essential. I am not fully human with it.

Also, in the mronings, I wil have a freshly squeezed orange, or grapefruit juice, or a mixed freshly squeezed citrus juice (orange, lemon and grapefruit).

Plenty of water during the day - at least a litre, sometimes, two, and in hot climates three.

Sometimes, in the evening, I will have a cup of tea.

And, when imbibing, I enjoy either wine or beer.

Currently de scaling the kettle and the shower head. Friday nights don’t get any more exciting than this!

Note my 18 year old self is not thinking this is his future!

Here, one's need for excitement has been has been provided by disassembling, cleaning and rebuilding the flushing mechanism of the toilet cistern. It is so old I can't get spare parts, so have to get the current one working.

Fortunately the coffee machine is working perfectly...

Not done that for a while. In our old house the toilet used to leak for a bit then fill itself up. I sealed the rubber gasket with vasaline and it was fine after that. I was very pleased with myself that day. My history with plumbing isn’t great.

The joy, when someone who mistreated us in a very difficult period, gets a real kick from karma.
Above that wants our attention later 🙄
I allow myself to laugh and send love back to my struggling self who actually knew somehow how this would play out.
I was struggling, not stupid 😉

9/11 is on my mind today. I hope it never happens again.

Same. Like most of the adults, in my age at least, remember clearly and exactly what they were doing that date. Even here in Sweden. I always have loved the states and particularly the american people.

I was at home, don't remember why I was at home, perhaps sick or just a day of/vacation. Don't know really.
It was quarter to three in the afternoon (beeing 6h ahead from NY in our time zone) and my younger brother sent on message on ICQ (do you remember that one?) and told me to check the news on a swedish online news magazine.
Checked it out and replied immediately something like "Haha, ****, the hackers are getting better and better" or likewise.
I truly believed the site was hacked showing the first impact. It never went through my mind that it actually was real and happening on live broadcast.
He simply replied, "Turn on your tv".
That gave me the creeps, suspecting the worst. I did hesitate turning on my tv and thought to myself, "please god, let this be some kind of sick prank" or so.

Well, I did turn on the goddamn tv and was in some sort of shock the following hours. Calling friends in the states (not actually in any of the states directly impacted but anyway) and no one, absolutely no one answered my calls. (3 persons, one in Seattle, one in California and one in New Orleans) I sent text after text to them hoping to get some sort of repy. God knows if they were on vacation or something like that in NYC.

Horrific.

Enjoy your herniated disc.

I have had mine for some 40 years now and it still comes back to harass me.
Initial treatment (after rest and pain killers) was exercise to get the muscles on my spine to build up and support the disc. Specifically, I was doing 3-position target shooting, and the lifting of the 10 kg smallbore rifle and bending built up my back so the pain went away (mostly). Probably not what your physio would recommend, but it worked for me.

Now if it gives me grief (i.e. due to gardening) I take a paracetamol and an ibuprofen tablet in combination. One of each works better than two of either.

BTW, learning to sit properly also helps immensely.
A chiropractor is also best for any type of pain. :) Especially for neck pain, lower back pain, sports injury, etc. All you need to do is to find a trusted, skilled, and professional chiropractor.

We have been going over to the Mount Annan Botanical Garden for (almost, nearly) daily walks. There's lots of upping and downing, which is good for the heart, and the occasional seat, which is good for catching your breath after too much upping.

It's also spring. Plants are flowering and seeding (which is botanical for having sex) and lots of birds are taking advantage of the seeding grasses for afternoon tucker.

We came across a grassy area with lots of Red Rumped Parrots. Now many of these small parrots are, like people, serial monogamists. And most of the parrots were in male/female pairs, very close to each other.

Except for one pair, who obviously 'weren't talking', as one was a grassy area on one side of a path, when her mate was in a different grassy area on the other side.

Will write a bit more this evening but just got back on Sunday from my week-long study trip with the fall semester study abroad students. As the usual two-week Greece trip was out (and am just thankful we have a semester this fall) we took an educational and cultural tour of Switzerland by train for a week. Saw all 3 linguistic regions, oh and Swiss hostels are a good deal and very clean and well run.

Further to my post above, it was fun to visit different cities (and institutions, start-ups etc., all while respecting covid protocols of course) in Switzerland including getting interesting city tours of Bern and Zurich which allowed me to get a new perspective on cities I thought I knew. Also surprised with myself after a couple of decades in Switzerland never taking the opportunity to visit the Italian region of Ticino where I was last weekend. Lugano is the most beautiful city in Switzerland and Ticino has the best pizza by far. Of course it was always easy to go directly to Italy so maybe that's why. Still, Ticino has the advantage of Swiss orderliness (still not on the level of Zurich) and a lot less petty crime than say Rome. On the other hand, Swiss prices and shop hours (outside the main tourist areas).

Tomorrow our Master's students arrive so expecting a very busy autumn indeed.
