This is from a few days of use from an article on 9to5Mac...yikes
I hate to be a naysayer, but is this actually a Jet Black iPhone 7? Somehow that looks like a metal bezel unless it's a reflection? All the article says about this picture is "In the meantime, if you’re still wavering over those Jet Black scratches, this photo may help you make up your mind…" which does not specifically state this is a photo of an iPhone 7. The source of the photo is not given and it does not appear to be from any of the reviews listed unless I missed it.

Not trying to be defensive or anything. I have no doubt the Jet Black will be prone to scratching, but I suspect (hope) the issue it will not be as bad as everyone is expecting.

That threw me off as well. I'm assuming it IS a jet black iPhone 7 since they are in the process of reviewing one but it didn't look like it at first. I'm guessing it can surely look like this in the right (or wrong) conditions if it scuffs so easily.

It's on 9to5 macs front page on the phones review

I read the article on 9to5mac they did not actually post a review, just a roundup of other reviews from around the web. That's why I suspect this picture is not an iPhone 7 because they posted this picture, but not an actual review. From the wording I almost feel like they are posting a picture of a different scratched up glossy black phone as an example of what a scratched up Jet Black 7 could look like.

It specifies in the article that there's a picture of the iPhone 7 JB that the bottom of the article. Specifically citing what happens to it. Why are you doubting this? It says it literally everywhere how easy it is to damage. ITS THE IPHONE 7

Precisely why I canceled my order that was super delayed anyways and went with the normal black.

Specifically what it says is: "And if you want to see how bad it can be, check out the photo at the bottom." I believe the photo is an example of what a badly scratched Jet Black iPhone 7 could look like, but it's not an actual iPhone 7.

Again, it DOES NOT say "check out the photo of a scratched Jet Black iPhone 7 at the bottom of the page."

Also, notice at the bottom the author says "We’ll of course be bringing you our own reviews next week (though not me – I’m still really happy with my SE)." So he doesn't even have an iPhone 7 yet, and apparently isn't even going to get one. So where did the picture come from?

I think that was on TechCrunch (if nobody has said it yet) and I also thought that silver part looked funny. The reviewer has a JB and a matte phone

You're right it looks nothing like the jet black iPhone 7. At first I thought it was the space grey 6, but that metal looks a lot more like brushed stainless steal than bead-blasted aluminum to me.

I don't doubt it will scratch, but there's no way that can be the jb iphone 7. The silver metal border gives it away. It's a clickbaity photo. In fact, I'd bet it's a close up photo of an iphone 3GS.

Couldn't have said it better

Honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic with agreeing to this:

"That's like saying why buy a 128gb phone when it does the same thing as a 16gb?"

16GB is not the same thing as a 128GB iPhone. You cannot load 100GBs of movies/music/pictures on a 16GB iPhone. Very different things.

The color is personal preference. And if it's covered by a case, it seems irrational to get a special color. It's a phone. Be courageous and use it.

Hearing that a lot of people are really wanting the jet black iPhone 7. And we've all seen the disclaimer from Apple regarding the scratchability and strongly recommending a case on the back.
Which begs the question- if you're getting a jet black because you love the look of the lovely glossy finish, but you're needing to slap a case on which means you won't see it, what's the point of it??

What's the point of wearing red underwear if you're just going to put pants on over them?

People can buy what they like, I don't know why I or anyone else should care.

Here's the full picture. People believe anything... Sad.
Okay I'm gonna eat some crow. This IS an iPhone 7. I emailed the author and he confirmed it, plus the FCC ID does not match any previous iPhones. I could not find the FCC ID for the 7, but the Plus ID is BCG-E3087A so it would stand to reason the 7 could be BCG-E3085A. That must be one hella weird reflection to look like metal.
Also, the author said he suspected it has been deliberately scratch tested. Yikes indeed.

Thank you for coming back here and letting us know what you found out.
I agree that it looks deliberately scratched, with the pattern/cross-hatch nature of the marks.

To address the thread in general, I am curious:
Has anyone seen any real-life photos of a Jet Black ip7/ip7+ in a clear case of any kind? People seem to be assuming that black and jet black will look identical in such a case - I'm genuinely curious whether that's true or not...

full video.
I wasn't convinced it was a JB 7 also. However, I think somehow those scratches have been accentuated. picture is about 3:14 into the video

I still don't believe that this is an iPhone 7. It looks nothing like it.

Might help not keeping phone in same pocket as keys. Unless you out to prove some agenda. No way a clean (not sand filled) cloth pocket did this. Someone was trying to see how easy it scratches.

Nobody would know if you removed old data and replaced with new data. A 16gb phone works the same as a 128. I'm sure you get the idea, you seem like a smart guy.

I got some of my OCDness from my youth collecting baseball and then basketball cards. They had to be mint and centered. Always put a plastic sleeve case or hard plastic case over my most prized ones. But then I started thinking about Howard Hughes and Howie Mandel. I don't want to have their disease. More anxiety attacks. Limits your enjoyment.

I can understand wanting to sell it later in excellent condition, but all you are doing is a favor to the next owner. And for what? Maybe an extra $50 for it? Just ROCK-N-ROLL with it! We are not going to be using this phone forever. Liberate your mind from being OCD! Don't get weird like Howard Hughes and Howie Mandel. The inability to shake another person's hands would bother the crap out of me more or having an even amount of peas.

Our lives are temporary. These phones we use our temporary. Do you really think we will be using an iPhone 7 about 30 years from now? I doubt it passes 5 or even 10 years. Like that Kansas song, "Dust In The Wind", we can't take possessions with us when we are dead. We will either be rotting underground or in ashes while your iPhone 7 is rotting in some landfill someday. We have black appliances all over the house more expensive than this phone. Do we dust it off every hour?

Covering it up with a case is like a Afghan woman with a beautiful face and figure needing to be covered because of Muslim laws. You don't buy shoes just to leave it in the box. You don't buy a supercar to never drive it. I worried about this with a black onyx Note7. I told myself, "Screw it! Just do it! " I worked for Virgin and it's a Richard Branson mantra. Who cares about this OCD nonsense? Nobody cares if you have a mint condition iPhone except maybe the next owner (maybe some random stranger) who wants it.

Enjoy your jet black iPhone like there is no tomorrow. Enjoy it like it is your last day on Earth. It's all temporary anyway just like our lives. Covering it up and trying to maintain it as mint condition or worrying about smudges or scratches will only limit yourself from full enjoyment. Just have fun and enjoy... :)

Jet Black
+ More uniformed look
+ Hides antenna lines the best
+ Hides the camera hump the best
+ More bling factor and standout from its shine
+ People know you have a 128gb minimum and not the cheap 32gb model

Wipe it off or shrug it off, then move along...

^ Do you really want to cover up that iPhone in the far right? That's like dating Halle Berry and you want her all covered up with heavy clothing because of your insecurities. That's being OCD. Breeds high anxiety and insecurities. Pretty design just to cover it up because you're prissy? The late-Steve Jobs would approve of going no case jet black since he was a rebel with a cause. Everything is just temporary. Just rock-n-roll with your iPhones with no cases, dudes and dudettes! ;)
This... Was the most inspirational thing I've ever seen and it's about a goddam phone hahaha
