Tim's team: "Due to the supply chain we won't be able to ship the new M1 until Q4. Do we still announce @ WWDC?"
Tim: "Well we still could announce and ship then... we've had those kind of gaps and people will hold off buying PCs for back to school"
Tim's team: "Oh and it will also have the side effect of making Jon Prosser look like a douchy fool"
Tim with his evil M1 grin: "Cancel the WWDC announcement"

If the new Mac are using a M2 chip presumably based on the A15, I don’t know how anyone thinks they would come out before the iPhone 13
Well, the iPad Air with A14 came out before the iPhone last year and its been well documented by those in the supply chain that Apple's next gen M1X/M2 (whatever they are called) went into production in Q2 of this year. So it's not impossible.

The same way the A4 came out on the iPad months before on the iPhone 4, the A5 on the iPad 2 half a year before the iPhone 4S, and the A14 on the iPad Air (4th generation) a month before it did on the iPhone 12.

Why does it have to be iPhone-first?

The iPad Air with the A14 was announced before the iPhone (12) with an A14. But it didn't ship before the iPhone 12. Both started shipping on October 23 2020.

October is fine - can't wait to dump my 16inch i9 noise-generator (most disappointing MacBook I ever owned)

The industrial design will look exactly like the new iMacs sans colors and white bezels- flat shape, no MacBook Pro word mark below display, newer magic keyboard, etc. Flat, simple, minimalist- just what Apple excels at.
Right, I don't doubt that. And totally fine with that.
I just can't help be curious as to what's after silver aluminum? You know, the aesthetic and materials of which everyone from other laptops, coffee makers, lamps, etc. will draft. Apple has that super rare, and nearly impossible for which to plan, ability to set the trend: be it in color, materials, etc., that you start noticing in other hardware manufactures aside from computers. Like when Apple makes a design mark, it's interesting to see how far that reaches.

Absolutely. It seems that they will go with anodized aluminum colors for the new MacBook Airs (or MacBooks, whatever they will be called) but it seems they’ve only had varying success with color design over the years. The original iMac was successful, true, and the multicolored iPods, but the iPhone 5C didn’t seem to hit it off the same way and have the longevity of those products. There was a matte black MacBook rumor circulating a few months ago; one has to wonder if that could be part of their plans. As for me, I really like the Silver/Space Gray color options of the current MBPs and wouldn’t mind if that trend continues. Nevertheless, their laptop designs have been so widely copied, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have that next big design and colorway trend (that we didn’t know we wanted) tucked up their sleeve…

Chrystal Ball gazing, Tea Leave reading and shooting from the hip will not answer your desires wants or needs. The rumored MBPs were never slated for 2021 release but more suited for rumor mongers hungry for lucky chance credibility and or click bait. IMHO and I repeat only IMHO so don´t get yer panties tied in a knot the new models will rear their heads in 2022 with the possible announcement coming in late 2021 (again 3rd time IMHO). There is nothing that would make me happier than to get my hands on a long needed upgrade but with all of the past second guessing im trying to be as logical and patient as possible. Have a safe a good summer!

The bolded part is dead wrong. There’s no way Apple would deliberately plan to release an OS requiring Apple silicon while selling no high-end MBP capable of fully running it. (There’s also no way Apple would deliberately go over 800 days between updates to the 16-inch MBP.)

Apple must be keen to get the 16" M-whatever laptop out there - the current Intel one is now nearly a year old isn't it? I'd imagine sales of Intel MBPs have fallen off a cliff now with the only people buying them people who have no choice due to software constraints or companies who need to buy them as part of device refreshes.

Much as I love my M1 Air, I really want something with a larger screen and four ports.

According to the Buyers Guide linked at the top, it’s been 582 days since the 16-inch was updated. Nearing record territory, I believe. A 2022 release would put it over 800 days.

I'd agree, but given the current chip shortage situation and difficulties in producing mini-LED panels (which Apple wanted for the new MacBook Pro models), I still say that Apple has very likely shelved the M1X SoC and decided to accelerate A15/M2 development. By late this year, there will be three designs in production:

A15--4 high performance cores, 4 high efficiency cores and 4 GPU cores for the iPhone and lower end iPad models.
M2--4 high performance cores, 4 high efficiency cores and 10 GPU cores for the lower end MacBook Air, Mac mini and iMac models and higher-end iPad Pro models. New memory controller will allow up to 32 GB of RAM accessed.
M2X--8 high performance cores, 2 high efficiency cores and 16 or 32 GPU cores for MacBook Pro and higher-end Mac mini and iMac models. Will allow up to 64 GB of RAM accessed.

The A15-based iPhones and iPad models arrive in September 2021; the M2 and M2X based machines arrive in early December 2021 to early 2022.

All in my humble opinion. :)

Back to school promotion just went live (just received the email from Apple). At this point I wouldn’t expect new laptop announcements until after the back to school promo has expired.

New MBPs are definitely coming by the end of 2021- they'll want to push new hardware with the release of Monterey. I'm sure shipments will slip into 2022 but they have to announce new models by October or November at latest.

It’s possible shipments don’t happen until 2022, but there’s no way this was Apple’s plan, as the other person stated. Simply no way Apple would plan to go over 800 days between 16-inch updates at a time when Apple is trying to transition all models to Apple silicon and designing a new OS that requires Apple silicon to run all features.

Maybe, but the return risk seems low here since supply is likely to be constrained and the main Back to School computers aren’t part of the rumored refresh. How many students are buying 16-inch MBPs? How many students are going to return their purchase and then wait a month or two for their newly ordered 2021 MBP to arrive?

Args, just announce the damn things Apple!

I've been holding off buying anything for over a year in anticipation of Pro-level Apple Silicon. I work on these machines 10 hours a day and am definitely due for an upgrade, but there is nothing acceptable to upgrade to right now.

Correct. Which means September. As soon as BTS is over they'll drop.

BTS runs through Sept. 27 and the return window runs until 15 days after that.

If Apple will announce new iPhones and Apple Watches (and probably AirPods) during BTS, and we know they’re going to, not sure why MBPs would be off the table.

Agree 1000%. It definitely wasn't Apple's plan.

Unfortunately, the most likely scenario now is an October announcement, either with iPhones or right after. I hope we're all surprised with an announcement sooner, but it seems unlikely Apple will do that while the BtS promotion is in effect.
