I had a week 34 iPhone but I didn't take down the factory id as I'm having problem with the phone; cannot hear the tone until I switch on the speaker phone and I can hear something rattling when shaking the phone...got a swap with a week 35, no yellow screen, I can make it drops 1 - 2 bars when touching the antenna.

i have week 39 and while i don't hold it anywhere near that section when i'm talking on the phone, when i'm holding it to surf or go through apps with my left hand, the bars drop 4-5 to 3 and sometimes to 2. it's going to vary for everybody

Thanks cruz777. So that's a strike against week 39. Be interesting to get responses RE week 41, since their being made right now i believe - post the September 30th marker.

Week 34 for me.

No problems with the screen, finicky home button, can make it drop 2-3 bars with the death grip (but I've never dropped a call).

Thanks.

Need more replies, but so far it looks possible that pre-week 38 is bad / post week 38 is good!!!

@rawCpoppa, you're obviously welcome to give your opinion here, but i'm not sure why you replied-it to me, since i didn't ask if it was possible. It's a hypothetical and just a guide as to whether it's yet safe to buy one without chancing the reception problem.

I'm basing said guide upon owner feedback on the phone they own, not upon sweeping statements regarding what the 'incorruptible' telecoms industry tell us is gospel in their honest-to-god working practices.

I understand what you're trying to do. I'm just saying that you're wasting time. I'm not siding with the telecoms as the FCC ain't a telecom anyway.

If you're basing your theory off of user feedback over the internet then you have alot of information to wade through like:

http://www.ifixit.com/blog/blog/2010/07/13/is-apple-silently-fixing-the-iphone-4-antenna-issue/

and

http://gizmodo.com/5587029/iphone-4-silent-recall-some-readers-confirm

and those are just from week 29.

Every change to a phone has to be run past the FCC and the information is public. A documented change there would be far more worthy of proof than posts from random users in the field experiencing varying levels of signal quality. Just saying.

Thanks for the measured response and links. I don't know anything about the FCC - whether they're a trustworthy body, or like such bodies in other industries could be found to have been not so efficient and by the rules under close inspection (such as the recent uk scandals involve the protection of children in which a previously trustworthy body was found incompetent.

In my effort to decide whether or not to invest the large sum asked for an iphone, i'd much rather trust the reports of phone owners. By gauging the median of these responses i'll make my decision. Perhaps others reading this may also find it useful.

I'm not interested in whether the reception issue exists, or how bad it is. I trust the numerous posters here that it is real and ranges from a few who have no issue, to pretty damn annoying, to making the phone useless enough to take it back to the shop.

No harm in seeing if there's a median changes in feedback after a particular week of manufacture.

Thanks cruz777. Are you using the phone with a bumper?

I have a week 40 iphone and have experienced the same thing. when held with the left hand, the the signal usually loses 1 or 2 bars. This is also without a case. Still curious to see if there is any difference with the week 41 iphone.

Week 39 IP4 here. I have so far been unable to make it lose receptions bars by gripping it without the case I got for it. Home button is perfect, no camera yellow or dots. Screen is perfect. No issues with iPod function, no camera app induced freezes or crashes (using both native camera and hipstamatic)

Only issues with the phone so far are
sleep/awake button came loose and makes noise when phone is shook (called applecare and confirmed that a button repair is covered under warranty if it eventually falls off so not worried about it)

That's about the only flaw with my phone so I'm VERY VERY happy with it.

week 21 :)

no major problems...1 or 2 bar drops when held in corner but no crazy dropped call issue
no screen discolouration either

week 35 here
screen problems (dead pixels), proximity sensor problems (even on 4.1), and can make it drop from 5-1 bar with death grip. gonna swap it next week hopefully :D

Thanks for feedback. Seem to be reception issues all round, apart from Nevpaurion's week 39 (though i wouldn't be too happy getting told to wait for the loose button to drop off of such a pricey item.

Also for Gecis there is no problem with his week 39 from China. I wonder if the location it was built makes a difference - are iphones built in different places?

@Nevpaurion, may i ask if you know where your iphone was built?

Week 39.

Definitely have the death grip problem. Drops from full bars to one but haven't actually experienced any call drops, etc. Probably because I don't actually hold the phone like that to my head.

I'm on my third IP4 - all 32GB Unlocked from Canada.

First - week 38 - faulty battery and brutal proximity sensor issues. Came with 4.1 installed.

Second - week 38 - blue haze and camera issues (with flash, everything was blue as though there was a plastic cover on still). Came with 4.0.2 installed.

Third and current - week 39 - no issues with camera or proximity sensor. Battery seems good so far. Crossing my fingers this is the one!

I will say that Apple customer service has been amazing. I'm lucky to live near many retail stores, so making an appointment (either same day or day before) was always easy and no one ever gave me grief or made me feel stupid for my issues with the phone.

Can i ask folk to add whether they're using a bumper and if so, then are there any reception issues when the bumper's not attached.
Thanks:)

Purchased a week 40 from best buy yesterday. Didn't test reception since it went directly into a case. No proximity issues or anything else. Great phone! I'll update if I have any issues, but I doubt I will.
