The Waiters sure are funny.

More performance? Productivity? By waiting for the new one?

Not completely true !!!!
...

Yeah, you're mostly right. Some people, myself included, have plenty powerful computers at work to use though. I'm buying the iMac for some independent work which my current machine is fine for now, as well as some computationally heavy personal projects that can wait for an update. I just don't make most of my money from my home machine, so I'm not losing much by waiting.

You're gratified now by being able to use your computer. Waiters will be gratified whenever a new machine is released.

Not all people replace their computers each year, especially not 2500 eur machines. I currently have a laptop that will soon turn 4 years, and because i got the best available computer back then, it still manages to fulfill my needs, but still, it's now a quite old machine and it deserves to be retired.

Moreover, i want to get up-to-date hardware for that amount of money.

Every year is just insane, but there are people out there with more money then brains who will buy the new one each time it comes out just for the bragging rights.

We are more realistic here. We purchase on a 30-36 month schedule. Every unit is purchased with Apple Care. Six months before Apple Care expires we begging to explore selling the unit because we found that a three year old iMac, with even as little as 30 days of Apple Care will sell for more than on that doesn't.

Once we find a buyer, out with the old and in with the new.

I don't always sell the last one though. At times I will keep it ( depending on work load ) and run it along with the new one.

I still have one 20" G5 model from about 2004 and a 24" iMac from 2006 in use here, though not for the heavy work.

I know that in on Nov/Dec 2014 I will put this one up for sale and be looking at a new computer from Apple.

I look at it like this, the cost of say $2400 spread over three years is $800/year or about $67/month and it will perform as good 30 months from now as it does today.

It's a business purchase, and those are not made the same as a personal purchase might be made by others.

I'd say we are already turning that corner :D

I've been hearing that for the last 10 miles. :D

BOTTOM LINE:
If you are a working professional and the computer is a part of your revenue stream you buy according to your business needs.

If you are just some kid who just wants to play the newest version of Space Invaders ... you wait! ;)

And if you're a married father of three looking to buy a new home machine to serve as personal video and photo editing station, web and doc producer, and home media server to several AppleTV3s throughout the house... you wait, because anyone with kids knows there's never enough money to go around and you need to get the best possible VALUE for the dollars you spend, and the longest-lived machine you can get. Which, right now, the 2011 iMac isn't either one, at full retail. Refurbed, almost worth it. Used, maybe, but not too many folks are selling the "current" model used at any given time unless something is wrong with it. Two weeks from now when refreshed? Certainly. Here's my VISA, Tim.

Not everyone has the same technology needs as you, and there exist more categories of user than Highballin' Biznessman like yourself and hopeless nerd kid living in parents' basement playing video games.

I've got to agree with OP about the lack of updates. Would a PC work? I'm no fan of Windows, but to pay for the Apple name on outdated technology is silly.

From the perspective that even though the 2011 tech will do the majority of what you want it is not the latest tech nor sold at a discount. It's akin to buying a 2011 auto for the same price (if not more) than what you could get a 2012 auto for. Will the 2011 get you to the store? Yes, but why pay the same price as a 2012?

Lenovo (IBM) H520 Desktop: $899 (on sale from $1,199)
3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
2TB 7200rpm HD
AMD Radeon HD 7570 2GB
Blu Ray/DVD drive

27" iMac: $2,549
3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7

AMD Radeon 6970 2GB

I know, Mac is better than Win, but that's just an insane price difference for similar specs. Even after the extra cost ($200-$300) of a monitor for the PC it's still a huge difference. Plus the PC is running the newer AMD Radeon 7000 series and has Blu Ray (if you care about that kind of thing).

I up voted you. your advice is spot on.

I bought my 27" iMac just about the time the rumors of a new one coming came about. Buyers guides said " Wait ... Don't Buy "

The lemmings said " Don't Buy New One Just Over The Cliff "

Well I shunned them and bought anyway.

Keep on publicly telling yourself you did the right thing if you must, but spare us the condescension.

I'm not a "waiter", I know that there always will be something better coming in a year or in months, but I have a 2008 24" iMac, and I'M WAITING for the new iMac.

I work with the Mac — I'm a designer/developer — and it would be stupid to buy the current iMac and then keeping it for at least 4 years. The current iMac is already more than a year old and it still have USB2.

In this case the sacred law "Buy it when you need it" is not that sacred. Come on, paying a fully priced computer that is one year old and that has USB2?

When I decide it's time to buy and the current model is at least 7-8 months old, I wait for the next update. Not forever.

As insane as the OPs opening post was I must admit I too am getting pretty frustrated about this. One of the best computers Apple makes and it's more than 400 days since refresh?

And still Apple grows sales while other PC makers lose ground. Wonder how many of those nearly 2M Macs were 2011 iMacs.

Apple is trying real hard to refresh the iMac, but they have a serious problem.

You see when they developed the 2011 iMac, they reached PERFECTION.

It is nearly impossible to improve on PERFECTION, but they are trying!

If anyone can improve on PERFECTION, it would be Apple.

:D

I keep reading this thread and I must say this like I said before, If you need one now buy now. If you wanna wait then wait. It's your money, due at you wish with it. I bought a 2011 iMac a couple of weeks ago because my 2007 MBP santa rosa finally bit the dust. I don't regret my purchase. I do think I paid a little high for tech that was last year but I can say that the iMac is still selling well even though it been over a year since a refresh.

But I will say all the in fighting in the forums over a iMac that WAS SUPPOSED to be release it's getting pretty hysterical. Apple will release it when they see fit and YOU can't control it. So don't get all bent over something YOU can't control..

To be equal, that Lenovo must be paired with 27 inchers like Dell or Apple. And also GPU is not on par with 6970M, it might be 7 series, but that's the low-mid class. Bluray is nice bonus, but not really necessity since I only watch BD on separate home theater room.

Still, iMac's price is higher for what you get though since it's 2012. But it wasn't a problem to me. I bought it back in June 2011, it was the best bang for the buck back then.
