I can't see why everyone needs the 2012 iMac... buy what you need now, when you need it. Since whatever you buy there's always something around the corner anyway.

the problem is that we need to make the most of out our money not everyone can pay for outdated computer components we cant pay premium price for 2011 components so buying a 2011 is just not an option. stop suggesting such thing.

K, for those who can't wait and need an all-in-one, get the HP Z1 Workstation:

http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/workstations/z1_features.html

More power, more memory, more graphics, more expandibility, more user upgradibility, Blu-ray, webcam, SSD, etc.

It may not look quite as pretty as an iMac, and it does not run OS X (though you might be able to Hackintosh it), but it's a pretty good alternative.

Just sayin...

we want an imac not windows machine some of us hate windows, and more importantly have bought software that works on a mac and not on pc.. so what do we do throw that money that weve spent on software away. Moreover some people like the apple ecosystem with the idvices and other stuff we cant just say *****!t to all of that.

Exactly. Who in their right mind buys a computer only for its pieces and parts? At least no Apple customer does that, by definition.

I am getting pretty tired of the piece by piece examination of iPhone bits being smuggled out of factories... and just not a peep on anything Mac related.

Largerly because I am in a hole.
My need for a new machine is pressing, but I am not caving and going for a new one.
So Refurb? - The prices on the Apple UK refurb store are frankly insulting, (but then too so is the asking price of the machine now...) save a whole £200. It is simply not enough off to make it worth it as an option.

it's about the same if converted into US dollars, yet UK pricing is actually higher. Regarding external displays, Apple isn't the greatest source for displays. I'm sure someone will bring up the recent macbook pro, yet that's the first truly impressive one I've seen from them.

I think they're more irritated than anything rather than desperately in need. It's important to note that with the accelerated OSX revision cycle, hardware may be dropped more frequently with the latest OS. This can be an issue if something requires the latest OS or if other developers synchronize with Apple in this regard. I don't blame them for not wanting to buy something on the tail end of a refresh.

I'm glad I'm not the only one going nuts waiting :) and for those who says " just buy the current model" - just **** and find something else to spend your time typing. Of course I don't want the buy the current when I perhaps can get a machine with 75% less reflection screen and 80% faster graphics rendering, etc in a couple of months... Who would? Then I would make the most regrettable investment possible. Macrumors Buyers guide is invented for a reason... So people who actually care what they spend a bucket of cash on get a few pointers.

To quote myself on this machine a few weeks ago:

...This has a similar processor and worse graphics than the next iMac is expected to have, and with that configuration, costs $5200. The only things upgraded at that price are the GPU and processor to the top options, no RAM, etc. I also did the HDD to 1TB to match the iMac. This won't appeal to many consumers (and honestly probably not many professionals either).

I though that it looked like a nice little PC too until I looked into it.

But when fully upgraded, and yes, it costs big money to upgrade that machine. It is better than an iMac, for a pro. I love how you can upgrade almost everything in the machine with no tools.

Anyone who truly believes this can feel free to PM me for a place to send a spare $600 that would be much more effective than contributing to AAPL's dividend.

I've been waiting since the start of the year and yes it is annoying. But even without the rumours and leaked parts, at least I know I'm 8 months nearer a refresh than I was when I started. I have seen many promised dates come and go (WWDC, ML release, Sept 12?) and who knows when it will come out. But having waited this long I can wait it out until whenever. If they reduced the 2011 significantly (not just refurb) then I would probably buy. But 2012 price for 2011 kit no way. I love my iPhone 4 which I purchased outright on launch day. Is it still a good phone? Does it do what I need? Yes. Would I pay the same price for it today? Not a chance! Come on Apple release it already or at least discount last years model.

imagine if it turns out to be just a minor silent refresh  I can't be sure but that might just push me over the edge and say screw Apple forever lol

I can't see why everyone needs the 2012 iMac... buy what you need now, when you need it. Since whatever you buy there's always something around the corner anyway.

Because my current machine has been dropped in the OS X software cycle, it has a non-functioning DVD drive and the LCD is beginning to reach the end of its life. The GPU is barely managing and is beginning to display artefacts after the machine has been on for a while.

The limitation on how much RAM I can install is also messing with my productivity since it is making VM use virtually impossible.

That is why I need a new machine, however I'm not spending full price for hardware that is so grossly out of date, especially with the seemingly evident trend that the major OS X release is targeted to a narrower and narrower range of machines.

I expect to get about 5 or 6 years of life out of my new purchase. Buying it when it's already over 18 months old (but at a price that suggests it's brand new) is just silly.

If my current machine dies before the refresh I will be buying something off ebay instead.

This cannot be ... 474 days after the last release, there has to be something more than just a minor refresh ! Otherwise they're really going out of their minds at Apple ...

Why? I want to see some new innovation, but all I really need is 2012 components running OS X. There's nothing wrong with the current design. Saving 25mm in thickness won't get me excited. Saving 25mm in thickness at the expense of the ODD would get me irritated; trading functionality for a bit of thinness isn't appropriate for a stationary computer.

I want this rumored anti glare screen. I wouldn't be surprised if the total package still looked extremely similar to the current design.

There must be something more?
would be great..but honestly i don't keep my expectations so high,
Cook is wasting all the magic Apple had for...just iphones,
Just Iphones,he doubled down on Mac leaks ( quite hard to leak something doesn't even exist, maybe they will update the Imac next year when the Cpu they're using will go out of production as with the ridicolous Mac Pro update)
but hasn't with iphones...and we must wait,believe..for what GREAT COOK?for what?
i'm sadly ready to go off their ship if they won't release any Imac soon.
Terrible management, just phones...AN EXPLOSION OF LEAKS OUT THERE,ARE COPS ON VACATIONS,ITS SUMMER...so..ladies and gentleman be happy, the new Forstall 's Apple is here.:apple::(
and why they don't hear us...i suppose its due to their faulty antenna..we! are "askin" wrong
but there'll be an app for this ,the Hand-Imac,all the Imac you were waiting for just in your hand,
no Odd,no 27,no weight,no Dvd,this as "thin air",just touchy.

This might be a good time to point out that the GeekBench results in May plus the Kuo report on manufacturing issues pointing to Sept/Oct means this has been one of the "noisiest" iMac launches of all time. This isn't doubled down secrecy. This is normal to below normal secrecy.

Exactly the same boat and better put, though I am already on to the MBP.

and because of that this is also just it - I am already looking at 2010 and 2011 machines on ebay and other sites. If I can get a deal that suits and works I will get one - which then means that I am then very unlikely to refresh on this next machine anytime soon and my money will not be going to Apple so a lose for them.

as for 'buy it when you need' it - I was trying to get a machine in February/March but as also pointed out earlier by other s too - this is my hard earned money, MY money - not business, nor a loan or finance or someone else's, IT is what I have pulled together for the purpose of a new machine - and this money I want to go far, as far as it can (OSX redundancy of hardware as has often happened too quickly will be pretty harsh when in 2016 they wipe the 2011 machine from the cycle and I bought that machine in nearly 2013...)
when I couldn't quite scrape enough together to get the higher end machine that makes the most sense to buy - and the rumor mill began on a highly likely new machine I thought I'd keep on saving do a few more weeks and get the updated machine.
Since then and all the new hardware that came to market I have been committed to the update and that has just been a torrid decision and one that there is just no light in the tunnel on, and it is getting frustrating - I am a consumer and I have a demand so where is my supply? Business 101.

Revision of form, the things is down to just about the size of a monitor, save for some aesthetic tweaks - where is the improvement to be made? other than tech, I'm with 42J on this a nicer lower reflective screen and nice internals will be just fine and that does not need a fanfare it just needs to be out here to buy...

because of what happened to the mac pro recently :p

I said minor update like the mac pro got. Not major update ;) and by major i mean completely new technology without any redesign.

Don't get me wrong, I will buy the iMac new design or not because right now it is the best looking computer in the world anyway. I am also hoping for that anti glare screen :)

Are you forgetting the Mac Pro? - I think apple are scaling back on the yearly cycles of the iMacs and Pros, and reserving them for the cash cow products -I.e phone and ipad

IMO the longer the wait the more likely we'll get a new design iMac next, and not just an Ivy Bridge update, JMO.

Technically it should have been easy for Apple to do the same updates they did with the MBP back in June on the iMac, leaving the design unchanged. Clearly something more is going on, either a new design or new screen option.

This is just a double fail, they aren't saying anything without any cares for the customers waiting...and customers are always right.

Were you expecting anything different? I'm certain that an iMac, hell, any Apple product isn't right for you if you want a company which keeps you abreast of what their plans are for a less-than-bestselling product line. As forty2j (who has to be the most consistently amazing guy on here - well done to you, sir) said, this has been a fairly noisy presumed release as things go.

This goes to Tutlez too : I didn't forget the Mac Pro affair, but the two machines are not comparable in terms of selling numbers and appeal for the public ... the Mac Pro is a "Pro" computer, much more expensive than an iMac, ect.
Until any other computer company will produce desktops, iMacs will have a very good reason to exist and will be worth for Apple to produce ...

What?..are you forgetting all the tons of leak about iphones out there?Do you really believe the fable of a worker which casually takes a shot and anynimously share on the net?Cook said quite cleary,he doubled down,so Apple is implied on the rumors has taken it back from the graveyard, the marketing of hype, the ones which justifies even this site apart the little fact that soon running all thiose Ios rumors must be renamed as IPhonesRumors.I meant,I suppose its the same Apple who let them escape..or its a different one? Then you can't really know which Mac is for me or not,you can just about your needs, what i need is a damn new 2012 Imac,i won't ever buy a 2011 one and yes i liked the "old Apple" more than this one so silent on Desktop side, even with their stratospheric AAPL,maybe who's sayng buy the old one instead of waiting is simply tryin to push up these ones,
i won't give my contribute to reach 648 but with 2012 Imac.

But the thing is, both of these are nothing new. iPhone parts end up on the internet. There's too much money to be made by the people selling those pictures. It's worth incurring wrath of Apple.

iMac parts, not so much.

From where I'm sitting, I see literally no difference between "old Apple" and today, unless by "old Apple" you mean from the time before the iPod was introduced.

Let me rephrase my previous answer for you. It's clear you haven't understood me.

The silence is normal. It has nothing to do with AAPL's success. The gap between updates is not a factor which will contribute to Apple's silence.

The 'old' Apple - I assume you're talking about the PPC era - was exactly like this. As I said, if you want to know the future of your favourite product line, Apple is not the company for you. Expect to be left in the dark.

Of course I don't know what your needs are. I do, however, know that your needs are not things which either the new or old Apple can accomplish - your requirement for Mr. Cook to bare all about the iMac.

I'm afraid my last line of advice may seem harsh, but I believe it's the truth - Shut up and sit tight. There will either be a new iMac, you'll buy another Mac or you will buy a PC. Those are the categories which your needs fit into.
