ordered 16GB of 2GB OWC RAM from macsales.com on the 17th Jan, and they just shipped yesterday (23rd) and according to FedEx, should be with me (in the UK) on the 25th !!!! (fingers crossed it slips by customs.. either way, still damn cheap!!)

:)

Can someone who has received their OWC RAM please please PLEASE with sugar on it do some basic checking... what are their temperatures? Are there any memory errors from an error checking program?

I just bought from Crucial.com. 1 pair of 1gigs and 1 pair of 512's....fast shipping and everything was right.

Had some problems on the Leopard install--had to take it out to get the install to work, but after the install I put it back in and it showed up and is working!

I have 2 2 gig RAM chips from OWC - the temperatures are 49 and 51 degrees...absolutely no memory errors.

I've filled multiple machines with RAM from OWC (macsales.com).

I've never had a single issue. I consider them the best at the best price.

My Ram just shipped from OWC. I ordered last week, so all in all, it didn't take THAT long. Apple has yet to ship anything to me. So, the RAM's worthless anyway until I get the computer.

Now, I'm worried that the "6 gig" configuration will apparently make my machine run slower...*oye*...

yeah, i think the whole "all your ram has to match or it'll slow down your machine" is pretty overblown. barefeats had an article on this, i wouldn't worry...(i myself have the stock 2 X 1 along with 2 X 2 from OWC)

Does anyone know where I can buy RAM for a 2008 MacPro in the UK? Crucial don't seem to have any.

Yes, from me.

Click on my signature. Auction ends in a few hours.

None of the suppliers in the UK have this RAM yet. Not even Apple.

I'm starting to think it's more hype than anything else. Thanks for the reassurance, though. :)

seriously just buy if from america, macsales.com have a really good return policy and respond very fast to emails and live chats so even if something does go wrong they will still help you out, their ram comes with a Lifetime Advance Replacement Warranty, so they will send out new ram to you without you having to send yours back first.

add to this even with the customs charge you are saving a considerable amount of money.. i ordered last week, and it should be arriving tommorow, FedEx did call me today though asking to pay the customs charge. I ordered 16GB (2GB Sticks) at $811 total and charge was £83.71 so that's £494.44 for 16GB, if Crucial charge the same as the 2007 MP Ram (which i don't think they will) then it's going to cost you £720, although i think it will be more like £800.. the only benefit of buying from UK is quicker shipping times back and forth if something goes wrong, though my ram was shipped wednesday and is coming friday.. that's not bad :)

Question:

If I have the 2x1 gig setup and I purchase 6 gig setup.

https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/64FB1MPK06GB/

6.0GB OWC Matched Set (1GB x 6) PC6400 DDR2 ECC 800MHz 240 Pin FB-DIMM Modules for Mac Pro Quad Core / 8 Core 2.8/3.0/3.2GHz systems. *Apple Qualified Memory* Lifetime Advance Replacement Warranty. (OWC64FB1MPK06GB)

Will I be able to use them both for a total of 8 gigs? Will I have enough slots to use it all?

Yes. Page 86: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Mac_Pro_Early_2008.pdf

I have 2x2GB OWC + 2x1GB Apple in Riser A and 2x2GB OWC in Riser B for a total of 10GB. I did some checking with memtest, no errors, but it only checked about 2GB of it. I haven't had any problems in applications that use most of the RAM.

Here are the current temps:

A1: 146
A2: 151
A3: 128
A4: 130
B1: 126
B2: 135

Pretty normal. OWC heat sinks have more fins than Apple's, otherwise look very similar. I'm not sure why A1 and A2 (OWC) are usually warmer than the others; perhaps because they are the innermost and highest and right beside more memory (unlike B1 and B2, also OWC).

I am going to purchase some OWC ram, does installing 3rd party ram violate the Apple warranty?

As long as you do it correctly and don't break anything, the answer is no. The Mac Pro manual even shows you how to add additional ram.

Finally, someone who has pretty much the same set up as me... we can compare notes.

I'm getting just about the same results as you, only I'm slightly cooler. But that may be because I am in really cool area.

This is what I am getting.
A1: 132.8 [OWC] 2Gb
A2: 136.4 [OWC] 2Gb
A3: 118.4 [Apple] 1Gb
A4: 114.8 [Apple] 1Gb
B1: 120.2 [OWC] 2Gb
B2: 122.0 [OWC] 2Gb

Like you, my ram on the top riser, closest to the board is running warmer than the rest. Should we be alarmed that the RAM runs hotter near the board, or is it really just normal?

According to system profiler no Errors what so ever. I did a RAM check with TechTool Deluxe [which came with an AppleCare purchase I made for a new iMac as well], the RAM passed.

So, are we good? Or what?

Has anyone ordered from TransIntl.com for memory? Just curious if it was a positive experience and any other comments are appreciated.

My 4 x 2GB came from them today, but no Mac Pro yet. The memory has the big black finned apple heat sinks on them which is all I can really speak to since I don't have a computer to put it in yet.

Thanks deathshrub, I hadn't heard much here and wanted to know so I would have an option to OWC because they didn't have the memory I wanted in stock (however now they do).

Cheers!
