Hi,
I usually get my RAM from dsp-memory.de
I had a conversation with a technician there and he said that neither kingston nor micron are currently selling fully compatible 800mhz modules due to lack of components. The tech didn´t specify which components exactly but also stated that the supply currently out there consists of ddr 667 modules with reprogrammed timings and speed. Also, he stated the current early 08 MP identify themselves a Proto1 and definitely will need a firmware upgrade BEFORE major manufacturers such as Micron and Kingston release their 800mhz parts.

I'm reposting this from another thread. Should I be worried!?

I don't think this is a problem. I had read here somewhere that if the RAM can run at 800MHz after some specific testing, then it is passed as 800 MHz. Bottom line as far as I can understand is that the timings and speed are what differentiate 667 from 800.

Anyone have some leftover memory from the early 2008 models that they removed and don't need?

Hit me up with a PM and I will buy it off you. I don't need insane amounts of memory so a few more 1GB sticks would be fine.

Wanted to point out that Mushkin now has PC6400 Mac Pro memory. It's hard to find...their site is horrible. But it does exist...hiding in with the PC5300. Just make sure you get the right ones. Their prices are slightly higher than OWC, but significantly lower than Kingston and Crucial.

I think these are the ones you're referring to:

Is Mushkin memory better than OWC memory? I've purchased memory from Mushkin before, but never from OWC. Is Mushkin worth the price difference? ($281 vs $219)

Got my OWC 4 x 2 gig ram delivered by FedEx today. I'm in the UK and it cost me £219 all in to get them to my door. Incredible considering the Apple option was over £1,600 !!!
All looking good so far.
:)

EDIT: Oh yeah, I ordered on the 23rd of Jan and received them 1st of Feb btw...

I received my sticks from Data Memory Systems yesterday. Only had to wait one week after ordering. They were very responsive to my email inquiries and I would recommend them highly, although the prices have risen quite a bit since I ordered.

Worth waiting til I go to Japan?

I am based in London and am looking to get new RAM for my 3.2 GHz that am going to order when they start shipping with 8800 graphics card.
Obviously I am not going to buy my RAM from Apple or probably from any one in the UK, but is it worth waiting until I go to Tokyo in March to get the RAM. Would it be cheaper than ordering from say OWC? The 17.5% UK VAT on USA import isn't an issue for me as I am VAT registered.
Has anyone bought RAM in Japan before?

Could you imagine trying to explain 800 MHz DDR2 ECC fully-buffered DIMMs for the early 2008 Mac Pro to the Japanese. If I were you I would do exactly what I did and purchase OWC ram from Mac Sales in the states. I paid no import or Vat and it arrived one week after ordering. 8 gig for £219 all in. I very much doubt you'll find better in Japan.

I ordered 2 x 1gb and a 500gb drive from macsales.com on Friday at 11am UK time. It arrived today, Monday at around 10am!

Pretty impressive service, and much cheaper than buying in the UK!

Now awaiting the Fex-EX Tax bill...

I've ordered from Crucial, NewEgg, and OWC in the past. All of them are great.

However, eBay is your friend for RAM. I've seen some amazing bargains. Two sellers (Power Memory and Memory Planet...I think those were their names) consistently had ram at 50% the cost you'd find on NewEgg, OWC, etc... I never bought from them but you can't beat those kinds of prices.

When it comes to RAM for my Mac Pro, I won't buy cheap from an eBay Powerseller. I'll pay top dollar in this department if I have to (NewEgg, OWC, etc..).

God thats fast!?
my 2x2gb was shipped on the 3rd although i picked USPS (dont ask, I was thinking I could escape import tax but we will see) so not expecting for another week.
Anyway my question to you is, did you get a coucher or anything from Macsales? As I already want to buy 2 more 2gb sticks :p and would buy now if I know I wont be getting a voucher when my first lot arrive.

I grabbed 2x2GB from Trans Int'l a couple weeks ago. I ordered on a Wednesday morning with regular ground shipping, and it arrived that Thursday. It has been installed for about 2 weeks, and works flawlessly thus far (knock on wood), so I cannot complain.

i did not read the complete topic, but i have a question

i was just on the site of owc (macsales.com) and i saw, that there are only qualified rams for the new mac pro

but not certified rams!?

will there be certified rams later? or are the qualified rams also quite ok?

Qualified vs certified is just marketing b.s. Certified just means they (Netlist, in this case) certified it themselves. Apple doesn't certify 3rd party RAM.

For some reason, I don't trust them. But I love the prices. Did you know that if one gig's worth of FB-DIMMs cost the same as one gig's worth of iMac memory, we'd be able to get 32GB for around $840? We hear about this underpricing of all the other RAM types, why no love for us?!

I can vouch for memoryamerica.com, I purchased from them before and contacted them a few times to see if they had the 800MHz modules in stock.

They've been extremely friendly at all times, and better yet I got my 16GB kit overnighted with no delays. They are a 5/5 star seller to me.

Just wondering if anyone ordered ram from http://www.transintl.com and got a tracking number for shipping. I'm from overseas and had ordered my RAM through them via overseas method on Jan 26th and my credit card was charged for the order on that date. I emailed them last night on the status and they said "it is in process"...whatever that means.

No vouchers that I saw....:(
