Wanted to point out that Mushkin now has PC6400 Mac Pro memory. It's hard to find...their site is horrible. But it does exist...hiding in with the PC5300. Just make sure you get the right ones. Their prices are slightly higher than OWC, but significantly lower than Kingston and Crucial.

I ordered 4.0GB of Netlist RAM from OWC. $329.99

Sure, I probably paid $100 for the Netlist instead of just the base OWC memory, but I guess I was a sucker for the "better safe than sorry" thing.

Should ship on Monday.

OWC's shipping estimates are false

All:

I have placed two orders from OWC over the past month and they grossly misrepresented the shipping time frames.

In both cases, the shipping estimate was one day. In reality, the first order shipped five days later. My second order was placed last Wednesday 1/23 and had a one day to ship estimate. It has still not shipped.

What ticks me off is I ordered with next day shipping to get it by last weekend - based on there stated shipping date.

Great prices and the memory is fantastic. It's too bad they have to set false expecations and diminish the customer's satisfaction.

I'd still order from them - just don't expect your memory to ship on/by theirestimates.

Just ordered 8GB from OWC

I just ordered 8BG (800MHz) (4x2GB) from OWC and quickly got a message saying it is backordered and expected to ship on Jan. 31. I guess We'll see. Doesn't matter to me a long as it is here by Feb. 19 (MP w/ 8800 Arrival date). Would have been nice to know it was on backorder before I ordered it though.

Has anyone ordered from TransIntl.com for memory? Just curious if it was a positive experience and any other comments are appreciated.

Positive experience. Human beings answers the phone in 3 rings. They tell you upfront that there will be a delay due to shortage of supply (and high demand). I ordered other stuff as well (external 2 drive mini G and and external casing for 2.5" drive - pretty expensive stuff compared to others but the built quality looks good and connections galore - for the 2.5") My order is due to arrive tomorrow - will post details then. 4 X 4 GB ram ships 4th of Feb.

I always get my RAM from Fry's, never had a problem with them and they always have very cheap prices.

Give me a link to Fry's for memory for the Mac Pro (early 2008). I see some memory that may (?) be used in the pre-2008 Mac Pros, but there is nothing to say that it has the proper Apple requirements for Mac Pro.

I ordered mine on 1/18 and it arrived today. 4x2GB. While they should do a better job of updating the ship dates, my guess is they were caught by suppliers giving them bad info. The announcement of the new MP's caught all these guys by surprise and in the rush to get it to market, all expectations were not met for the customers.

Perhaps everyone should quit referring to Windows as "The Dark Side" and perhaps apply that label to Apple. Apple loves to keep everyone in the dark, so there is no way to effectively plan for Apple computer purchases.

I used to work for the 10th largest public school district in the nation and about 15 years ago Apple had 95 percent of the school systems business. Now that percent is zero. They got tired of Apple's Dark Side.

I've had some problems with OWC memory before, with my Tibook G4. I kept getting bad batches of memory, passed the 30 day money back guarantee mark, and continued to get bad batches. I finally had to order from crucial. No problem with their memory. Lost a couple of hundred bucks! I still ordered 4x2gb for my MP 2.8 from OWC because they said they had it in stock and at the time and could ship in 1 day Heres what they say 9 days later:
Order Date Order No. Total Status Shipping
Wed., Jan. 23, 2008 xxxxxx $404.42 Web Order

Can anyone speak for OCZ Ram? There's a really good deal on it at Frys.com...was wondering if it was like bargain ram or something to warrant that kind of price?

I just got my 16GB of RAM from OCW yesterday, and so far I'm loving it.

I just wish that their customer service was better; they took twenty-four hours to respond, I waited for over an hour on hold when I called them, and they took eight days (including the weekend) to ship it.

I mean it's not like I paid for overnight shipping & expected to get it, well, overnight, or anything like that...

Just received my 16 GB from OWC this afternoon. (8 x2GB). Man these suckers are thick! Now I only have to wait another month for the freakin machine.....

Just got a notice that my extra 4 gigs from OWC shipped today (and I got the overnight shipping...surprisingly it wasn't much more than the 3 day..)

This'll push me up to 10 gigs and matching pairs in the first 4 RAM slots :)

how important is it to get the same size RAM for all the slots? i.e. running a matching pair of 2GB, with another pair of 4GB? If I get more pairs of 2GB, I could only go up to 16GB with the eight slots. I really want to get only 4GB pairs so I could someday max out at 32GB (I'd sell the 2GB that comes with my MP). I'm going to be running alot of AE, Cinema, and FCP. I probably need the 8800 too. The cheapest Ive seen for 4GB pairs of RAM is a little under 700 bucks.

Well, I've got two 512 MB modules that are paired to be 1 GB and also two 1 GB modules that are paired to be 2 GB. The combination gives me 3 GB, and performs quite well.

I would say that having enough memory (regardless of whether they are all the same modules) is more important than whether they all match. Yes, all the pairs need to be matched sets. But, not all the pairs in your system need to be identical (as illustrated by my setup).

Basically, it would be more important to have enough memory for your task. You would suffer a greater performance loss if you didn't have enough memory than you do by having different size pairs.

So, make sure your pairs are matched. But, otherwise, worry more about how much memory you have than whether one pair is identical to the other pair.

Ideally, you would have the exact same modules throughout the system. But, in the real world where money is a factor, I would worry more about having enough memory to keep up with the task.

OWC just shipped my 2nd order of the 4GB (2x2) kit... 3 days past their quoted date. I just wanted to get a 2nd pair in there to make sure all 4 pairs are matched. I had to pay the $20 price increase for the 2nd order, but I don't mind.

Now all I need is my 8800 equipped Mac Pro (estimated ship Feb 13). :-(

I've ordered from Crucial and I've used Crucial to find memory that I could buy at Best Buy. So far, Cruical has not disappointed.
