Saturday release looks good to me. Why not? Plenty of hype and ques at stores for Tiger if its on the weekend.

I agree. Remember that iLife and iWork became available in-stores on a Saturday. However, I still think they would tell us, before Saturday, so that people can show-up.

Heres a question, If someone was wanting to buy a Powerbook, How long would it be until Apple would start shipping preloaded Tiger Powerbooks after the official Tiger Release?

they'd start throwing it in the box from the word go but for a while you'd have to be installing it yourself.

Clue from a developer - within 2 weeks

Received this in an e-mail message from a developer today:

Dear xxxx trial user,

The Tiger update will be free, so buy today without fear of an additional upgrade cost.

The Tiger update will be release within a few weeks. Like most developers, we were caught off guard by Apple's decision to release Tiger so much earlier than expected, so we may miss the Tiger ship date if it's within the next 2 weeks, but you'll have it very soon.

I dont think it will work quite like that. There will be an amount of Powerbooks/macs in general that will have been sitting in a warehouse for a few days - weeks that will still only come with 10.3. Not to mention any macs in transit. These things take a good week or two to get from the production and packaging lines to your door step, via various distribution points and hubs throughout the world.

So I would expect it to be something like this. Tiger is announced, if you order a mac in next week or so it will not come with Tiger at all, pre-installed or on a disc. You would be eligible to get Tiger for the cost of P&P only. If you wait a week or two, any mac you order should come with Tiger pre-installed.

We really could do with a sticky about this, based on what's happened with previous releases.

For What It's Worth

Apple's promotion with Epson for a free C86 printer with purchase of computer runs thru April 12. (Note: the .Mac promotion actually runs through June 27, not April 17.)
Could this mean that Tiger will be announced either tomorrow, Tues., Apr. 12 or during the earnings conference call, Wed., Apr. 13? That would be great, if it does.

A while ago I had an idea that the shipping time for Panther may give a hint about when Tiger will be released, (why take orders for an OS when it will be replaced in a few days?) Therefore I have been checking the shipping times for both UK and US stores and they have been steady at 24 hrs for a good few weeks. HOWEVER, the shipping time on the US store is now up to 1-2 days. Does this mean tiger announcement tomorrow!?!?

Still within 24hr shipping for panther on the uk store

I was at the Apple store (SoHo) inquiring about an iBook and if I get it now with Panther, how much should I expect to pay for Tiger- say if it is coming out in a week? The shopboy said he don't expect Tiger to be out till some time in June. But again he professed that he is fairly new to the store so... who knows?

Macosxrumors http://www.macosxrumors.com/ are suggesting a possible announcement of the release date on April 13th.

well, 4 days. let's see what happens.

but for those talking about shipping with tiger... i bought a 17" iMac G4 in november 2003, about 3-4 weeks after panther was first available, and it still had jaguar on it.

Yes, I just checked and the ship date for Panther is 1 - 2 days. So now we can look at Tuesday once again. Since NAB starts on Saturday it could coincide with the Tiger release party.

I'd imagine if you bought a new upgraded (unreleased) ibook/iMac/emac that it would come with Tiger.

What the resellers do, and what abc123 was alluding to, is drop the OS upgrade discs into CPU boxes. They have to break the seal on the brand-new computer boxes. I ordered a new PM G5 from Small Dog Electronics last year in January. It has 10.2.7 installed on it, but it also had the Panther upgrade discs dropped in. I was initially a little put off by the fact that the factory seal on the box was broken, but they had to open it to drop in the OS upgrade discs (and the tiny plastic dogs that Small Dog gives with each order as well). If the reseller didn't have any discs to drop in, then there's the $19.95 upgrade offer to fall back on.

i don't know whether this means anything or not, but when i went to check the order status of my PB this morning, i got a message saying that online order status services are currently unavailable due to a 'scheduled upgrade'.

Any one have any ideas???

As a matter of fact, this usually happens right before a product/store update. Could be a sign of things to come tomorrow...then again who knows?! Tomorrow is a Tuesday after all!

Hmmmm
