I think they're probably adding one station to their assembly line. That station adds an insulating coating to the external antenna (or some other mitigation of "the gap"), which will greatly reduce the problematic signal attenuation. That, and they get a grip on the white paint quality-control issues.

The white phones hit the market and show much less signal loss. Silently, the black phones get the same improvement. And the free case offer comes to an end.

People with original-issue black phones got a fantastic phone and a free case (if they wanted or needed one). In the white phone era, the free case is no longer available and the phone signal issue drops (no pun intended) off the radar.

Everybody wins.

People who bought original black iP4 feel cheated out of a phone that "just works" because Apple refused to do a recall.
Said people proceed to file a class-action lawsuit.

I guarantee it'll happen.

i dont understand people, you do not pick the phone you pick the service, and then the phone. This is why there are sooo many people complaining about ATT because they switched only because of the Iphone, not checking if the service is good in their area. I wanted the iphone, but the best service i get is tmobile so what did i do, stuck with tmobile and got lucky that the iphone became unlocked (up until the iphone4 for now).

This is a valid point in Asia or some European countries where phones are unlocked and they use the same GSM service for all carriers. You can easily pick the best service that suit your needs, purchase whatever phone you want, pop in the SIM card, and voila!

However, in this Land of the "Free", you're really not that free to do just that. The GSMs have incompatible 3G bands (read: T-Mobile AWS 3G vs AT&T 3G), and the presence of "carriers without SIM cards" a.k.a (Verizon and Sprint). Those factors, coupled with the dreaded "exclusivity" and "carriers lock", yield the very problem you described.

US carriers are not dumb pipe and they are pushing the phones as part of the package. If iPhone is only available with AT&T and people love this phone, they will probably switch... unless they have 0 coverage with AT&T.

Every since the iphone come out it been "coming" to VZW in a few months or "later this year". It hasn't happened yet but people still hold on to their hope. I would hate to count all the dates it was "suppose" to be released with them..

haha yeah agreed. Im going to laugh when the iphone finally goes to another carrier and its not verizon people are going to go crazy. In my honest opinion, if the rumors of iphone to tmobile are indeed true (keyword children is RUMOR) i think tmobile would use their rights to the iphone to use as a bargaining chip when tmobile is forced to merge with another carrier to stay afloat in the next year or so, thus increasing their price tag on a merger, something that could see money going apples way as well, which they would LOVE.

well this sucks monkey nuts. i was planning on surprising my gf w/ the white iphone 4 for her birthday in october, and also picking one up for myself at the same time. god dammit! ......maybe this is a sign that i should stick w/ verizon?

October falls in the "later this year" bucket. You have time. Trust the force.

i don't think white fading to yellow is a concern, i think the bigger concern is the white turning dirty because of the everyday use and what not, thats why i don't understand why people are soo crazy for the white iphone, havent you ever had a white car or tshirt....how dirty does that mofo get quickly outdoors?
The paint is underneath the glass.

White paint on glass is very, very tricky. The actual hue, yellowing, and covering power are major issues. There are basically three pigments from which to choose: flake white, zinc oxide, and titanium oxide. Each one has different pros and cons.

Flake white is a fabulous white, has great covering power, and won't yellow if it receives light on a regular basis (don't keep in the dark). The con? It's lead. It won't be used in a consumer product.

Both zinc oxide and titanium oxide have less toxicity (which is why they're used in sunscreen lotions), but also considerably less covering power. The issue right now is they are probably having difficulty getting a thin enough coat, yet still have enough opacity.

You, sir, are full of logic and reason.

Somewhere on this site there was a discussion about some woman over in Britain who, in fact, already has a white iPhone4. I will probably never find that article again but I know I saw it. Something like Apple gave her a choice of white or black and she chose white.

She probably does not realize that she has the only white iPhone in existence and how rare it is. If she were to put it on ebay, I bet it would fetch 20-30 grand easily.

Walt Mossberg has one.

this is still a valid point for here, people just dont understand that service will always rule over the phone, and when you pick an amazing phone on a crap service, understand that it comes down to you wanted this phone, but clearly didnt need great service so dont complain

it looks like apple are starting to go down the route of profit before quality..shame...

So because they aren't able to offer their phone in white this automatically means Apple is more worried about profit? Sense that makes.

Unless they are barred from getting the service from AT&T, people's lust for the phone (especially Apple product) will take over and they will still purchase the phone knowing a subpar service in their area

Yes it's very annoying to see people complained but what can we do ;)

More production problems? I think those Foxconn workers can kiss that nickel raise good-bye.

I'm laughing with you at this...
If Apple can pump out white iPhone now and pump their revenue up from 16% sequentially (61% YOY), why the hell not ;)

haha, that nickel raise actually means that foxconn is going to charge companies they supply to more, which means more expensive to the consumer...damn suicidal chinese.

That would be a very bad idea. The idea of a "Silent fix" has been misrepresented several times on this forum. If they do implement something to that effect, and don't notify owners of the previous iteration and allow them to replace the phone (whether they have the issue or not) they would be begging for a lawsuit.

I guarantee it'll happen.

And I guarantee that such a class action suit will FAIL. The phone works, mitigation for any concern was solved by a free case or an offer of total refund. There is no grounds for legal action: Apple made absolutely sure of that.

The only thing that lawyers promoting such a suit will get is publicity. The members of the class (approximately .5% of those who bought an IP4) will get nothing more than their great phone and a case.

Are you kidding me?!?

Agh... I could have had a black on launch day. I could have had a black two weeks later. I could have had a black a week ago... I waited because I thought this thing would become available... f&%@ this...

Yea, me too for all that. Didn't know, even heading into launch day, if white ones would be available. Heard, at about launch time, that the white ones would be coming soon. Heard in July that they were coming late July. Now, one month after launch, they're telling me to just get a black one (which will take 3 weeks to ship). There goes two months...

It sounds like whining, because I guess life could be much worse. Not having it wasn't the end of the world - but being strung-along for this long kinda sucks.

I find this hilarious. You white iPhone people should not have waited to get ipone joy.

Soup Nazi:

No White iPhone for you.

Now MR will be filled with endless post with people lamenting over no white iPhone for months. What will they call this one Whitephonegate? White ipone is not even out and it's already played out.
