Two things I can picture:

#1: The Apple "white Christmas" promotion.

#2: this in the white iPhone press conference - "So we went into a couple of local mobile phone retailers and discovered this - many phones are hard to get in white. For example, you can see in this video how the man at this T-mobile store just laughs when we ask if they have any white Motorola Razrs, or white sidekicks."

Glass and plastic may be different, but BLACK paint is NO DIFFERENT than WHITE paint other than color. If they can get the black paint to go on without issue, they can do it for white paint. Give me a break.

Give us all a break with your manufacturing expertise. Yes, there are several reasons why white is different than black, not the least of which is color matching and consistency, and the effects of internal heat and external UV exposure on the color over time.

hmm...

visual research shows that the videos and graphics look and feel far better with a black background and black surroundings (hence the dark in cinemas and black tv borders).

* don't know if it is a reason or a rationalization, but it lets me be happy with my black choice *

I was holding out for the white but signed up for a black 32gb...anyways there's sure to be some cool aftermarket back panels after a while.

Here is my question, the iphone 4 came out less than a month ago and people on here are already talking about the iphone 5??

Do you all not remember when the 3g came out? The same casing/model was used for YEARS.

Jobs will not change the style of the phone, there will be software updates. There will not be an iphone 5 for over 2 years, mark my words!

It's been 2 years and 3 weeks since the 3G came out. Last year the 3GS came out. Next year will be something new probably iPhone 5 or maybe iPhone 4S, who knows.

I would think White iP4 is the SAME manufacturing process as Black iP4. Why is white paint that much harder to use over black?????

Shens.

Apple has been making white products for years.

Apple is playing games.

Did they actually say it was the white paint that they had problems with? I don't think so, they just mentioned production problems with the white iPhone. The overall bezel isn't exactly the same as the black phone, that might have something to do with the production problems.

Here's a hypothetical question for all of you:

Suppose you buy a black one now... Several months from now, the white comes out. Let's say a few weeks pass, so the buzz has calmed down.

Now suppose your black iPhone 4 has a small manufacturing defect, but one that warrants a replacement (e.g., dust under screen).

Do you think at that point, when the buzz has died down and there are plenty of replacements to go around, that you could talk a manager into giving you a white replacement?

Hmmmm paint on glass sounds like a terrible idea to me. That paint is going to scratch off.

LOL The paint is not ON the glass, it is UNDER the glass. You can touch the paint. Look at it in bright sunlight, you will see the color is underneath.

I can assure you that the rep you spoke to does not know for sure when they will be available, and saying that they might not even be available this year was pulled out of thin air. They are the last people told any information like that. Is there a chace for more delays? Absolutely. I said (earlier on in another forum) that July was not even guaranteed. The issues go way beyond just a color issue.

They could have internal memos you know. They certainly wouldn't put that in their press release. I told my gf the same thing, get the black because I wouldn't be surprised if no white model comes out this year. Lo and behold the Apple reps (or at least one) are saying this too.

Note to all: Steve Jobs lies. He did it while at NeXT (you know how many times their machine was delayed, or what about pricing?), and it seems like he's been doing it at Apple lately. The guys habits and personality hasn't changed a single iota in 20+ years.

They don't have memos that tell CS reps that the phone "may not even be out this year". I know apple very well, and I know that even some high ranking employees are not privy to certain information. And the release date of the white iPhone 4 is one of those that not many people are privy to.

Not a chance in hell. They didn't let people with 3G/3GS' change colors.

If you have a black, the only way you are getting a white is buying one at the $500/600 pricing, or if you're lucky, returning it.

Or, you could sell your black one if they're still getting that much on ebay/craigslist to absorb some of the cost of the white one.

Well, that's not really 'another' option, that's just the smart way of doing #1. :p

If I can get $600 or so for mine, I'd do it. Assuming the white one comes out before the iPhone 5.

That's it, I think I've had it with this forum. The level of incredulous cretinism on display in this thread really is a site to behold.

I'm so glad I didn't return mine this week, after hearing that announcement this morning. I was thinking of returning mine and using my work phone until the white came out. Phew.

Well thats sad

I've waited patiently all this time for white, and after they purposely don't mention they won't have white at launch in the keynote I still wait. Now they give us a real timeframe of when white is available "end of July." I still sit and wait.

Later this year is just too long, plus if you wait that long it will mess up your eligibility of getting iPhone 5 next year. It's only a color, and I shall settle for black. Disappointing because I can't get white, but exciting that I can get an iPhone 4 now.

Actually visual research prefers a neutral grey.

this is how all the whiners need to act in regards to the situation

White Iphone 4 (what's the big deal)

Why does everybody want a white Iphone 4 so badly? In the 3GS model the black model clearly outsold the white by a landslide. So why all of a sudden the need for a white Iphone 4? I would still rather have black just like I got black in the 3GS and most of you as well

Does the White Iphone 4 have extra features that the Black Iphone 4 does not? Or is the white Iphone 4 not being avaliable right now make you want it more? If the white was released first and black was not and harder to come by you would bitch you don't have black, lol

I think it's that Steve & Co. made it seem as if it would be here any day now for about a month and now everyone's pissed that they could have had an iPhone 4 for that same length of time. White's never coming out. They're just trying to avoid looking stupid.

Just a few of my thoughts on this.

It's interesting that they've been having quality control issues with the white paint. Haven't they been making white devices at least since their first iPod?

It's amazing how some of you get all in such a tizzy, I had to back off the iPhone forum for a while.

I suggest you watch this little bit of Louis CK on Conan: Everything's Amazing, Nobody's Happy

They made white plastic products before, not white glass

Oh and I totally agree, this forum seems to have been overrun with total douchecanoes recently.

Not true.

Individual pigments have their own intrinsic characteristics. Titanium white tends to be flaky and brittle.

Also, pigments interact differently with various mediums. Remember that paint is basically color particles suspended in a liquid that eventually polymerizes. A pigment that works well in one medium might not react so well with another (like linseed oil and acrylics in fine art painting). Some pigments handle rather poorly in one medium (e.g., linseed) and better in another (e.g., flaxseed).

A pigment that might works fine in a child's poster paint may not behave well as a car paint.

The application of a durable thin layer of paint to a substrate that is inherently paint-unfriendly is a serious technical challenge. Glass is not a rough piece of cotton canvas.

Hmmm, let's see. They announce new iphones. They only release ONE on the scheduled date...the black one...and the white one is "delayed" much to the consternation of everyone who wanted one...which seems to be a LOT of folks. Then, problems reported with the black ones already out...seems like Apple didn't research of fully vet the antenna/reception issues...but wait, there's a delay on the white one...because of quality control issues. Now, here we are...end of July...and delayed again UNTIL LATER THIS YEAR (???) (!!!)...because of QC issues with the glass. To quote SNL...Really Apple? No issues with the black one? Really? All phones have issues? Just a coincidence? A fact of life? Just the way it is? REALLY?

+1

So who will get a white iPhone 4 when the white iPhone 5 will, at that point, be 6 months away? LOL.

It strikes me that there is always a lemming effect with the new iPhone right? Its not just that they sold that many, but that they sold that many so fast. Almost all of them were before all the issues came out.

It will be interesting to see how the future launches go--will the blind trust still be there or will hesitancy born from this incident cause more people to hold back?

My money is on the lemmings.

Actually, many of my friends with past iPhones did not jump at the launch of the 4, all feeling that they wanted to see if there were any bugs.

Yea but surley they knew sometime ago that it wouldnt be ready for the end of July as they would have already needed to be in production

Yes.

This was a little tiny press release that will get little air time. Had it been incorporated into last weeks press conference it would have been more public since the entire world was watching that press conference. While I think it was planned and unethical...I can see why they did it.

Except that he did not have to volunteer the date the way he did. He could have said later in the year.

here is some more koolaid for people going crazy over the white iphone, remember this is hypothetical.

Go back to earlier this year when Gizmodo bought/stole/borrowed/raped an iphone 4 and leaked it much to the dismay of apple who releases an iphone every summer thus far, with all the problems that this iphone has seen, doesnt it now sound more plausible that the iphone 4 was not coming out this summer until it got prematurely shown around the world like a cheap $2 hooker? And instead was slated for a holiday release, thus pushing back all iphone releases. But because of Gizmodogate, apple was forced to release the phone early to get over the loss of revenue from the 3gs....

You did remind me that Gizmo may have had some influence on the rushed release of the 4. Apple also wanted to beat other smartphones, but this makes sense to me as the main reason they did such a sloppy launch and explains the problems that I never saw with previous iPhone launches.

I think Jobs believed the release date would be end of this month when he announced that a week ago. And I agree with others who have said they decided to go ahead and fix some problems with the white (there's more than just the antennae issue). That would be the smart thing to do.
